You move the car and find a fresh oil patch where it was parked. Before you agree to a repair, you want to know whether this is a loose filter, a worn gasket or a seal buried behind the engine.
So how much does car oil leak repair cost? AutoNation Mobile Service gives a broad range of $100 to $2,000, with some repairs costing more. Finding which part leaks is what makes that range useful.
I will walk you through the places oil escapes, the price of each kind of fix, and what owners paid.
Find the Leak Before You Price the Repair
Oil runs down the engine and along covers before reaching the ground. Luxury Auto Works in Austin cleans away old residue, traces fresh oil with UV dye and checks the crankcase ventilation system for excess pressure.
Roda advertises fluid leak diagnosis for $100, waived if you approve its recommended repair or service. Ask whether your shop credits the test toward the repair before adding both charges to your budget.
The places below are clues for that inspection. The front of the engine means its pulley end, which can face a wheel on a sideways-mounted engine.

A Leak Just After an Oil Change
Tell the shop when the spots started. Irish Mike’s in Orlando identifies a poorly fitted filter and a loose or overtightened drain plug as possible causes. Both deserve a look before anyone recommends engine seals.
AutoNation’s parts-only estimates are $10 to $50 for an oil filter cap, $35 to $45 for a drain plug gasket and $30 to $70 for an oil filter. Fitting and replacement oil are separate from those figures.
Oil Around the Top of the Engine
A wet seam around the valve cover points toward the valve cover gasket. Oil can run down the engine or reach the hot exhaust, causing a burning smell.
For Audi valve cover gasket and PCV/oil separator work, Luxury Auto Works publishes roughly $450 to $950. That range covers gasket and PCV/oil separator work, so ask which parts your quote includes.
Oil near the filter or pooled in the middle of a V6 can come from the oil filter housing or its seals. The same Austin shop gives about $500 to $1,000 for Audi housing or cooler seals.
There is a cheaper-fix check worth knowing here. Chrysler’s bulletin 09-003-25 warns that housings on certain 2022 to 2025 models with the 3.6 V6 were being replaced unnecessarily.
For a cap leak, Chrysler calls for a filter and cap O-ring kit. For a leak where the housing meets the block, it calls for a gasket kit. Oil from a valve cover can pool in the same valley, so the bulletin requires dye diagnosis.
Oil at the Bottom or Pulley End
A leaking pan gasket or sealant joint needs a pan reseal. AutoNation estimates $500 to $800 for an oil pan gasket job, made up of $100 to $150 for parts and $400 to $650 for labor.
Pan access matters: the Austin shop describes jobs ranging from a few hours to a full day when the subframe or exhaust is in the way. A cracked pan is a different repair from replacing its gasket.
At the pulley end, a leaking front crankshaft seal can be a smaller job. Subaru’s bulletin for 2011 and newer FA/FB engines allows 0.4 hour for the seal and 0.4 hour for leak testing.
Here is a worked Subaru example using both parts in its bulletin and Tekmetric’s $132 US average hourly rate. The extension O-ring must be renewed whenever the crankshaft extension is removed.
That subtotal excludes oil, tax, shipping and shop supplies. Subaru’s warranty time and a national average rate illustrate the labor; a retail shop may quote a different time or rate.
Oil Where the Engine Meets the Transmission
A confirmed rear main seal leak is expensive to reach. Irish Mike’s publishes $600 to $1,800 for the job, with the seal itself only $20 to $50.
Removing and refitting the transmission accounts for much of the work. I would want the shop to show the fresh leak before agreeing to that dismantling, because oil from higher up can reach this area too.
Two Other Parts That Can Appear on the Estimate
The oil pressure sensor or switch can leak through the part itself. One Kia owner’s repair below cost much less than a housing replacement, though access differs between engines.
An intake manifold gasket often seals air, and on some engines coolant. Oil around the intake does not by itself establish that this gasket is the source.
Luxury Auto Works estimates intake gasket work at about $350 to $650 on compact four cylinder engines and $600 to $1,100 on V6/V8 or transverse layouts.
Oil Near a Rear Wheel Is a Different Job
If the wet area is around a rear axle or behind a rear brake, it may be gear oil. A rear axle seal keeps that oil in the axle, separate from the engine’s oil supply.
Irish Mike’s publishes $150 to $350 for an axle seal and $200 to $400 for a pinion seal. Oil reaching the brakes or a worn bearing can add work, so a seal-only price may not cover the whole repair.
What Owners Paid or Were Quoted
These owners described their repairs in complaints to NHTSA, the US road safety agency. I have kept the dates and the difference between a quote and a completed repair:
- A 2015 Kia Optima owner reported that Weston Kia repaired a leaking oil pressure switch for a total of $248.60. Filed September 8, 2023.
- A 2019 Acura RDX owner reported a dealer recommendation of $500 plus tax for the valve cover gasket. Other suspension work was quoted separately. Filed July 24, 2026.
- A mechanic replaced the failed oil filter housing on a 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan for $808.63, according to its owner. Filed March 7, 2022.
The Caravan owner noticed a major leak and an oil smell without any warning lamp. A dashboard light is not the only reason to take fresh oil spots seriously.
Can You Keep Driving?
If the oil pressure warning appears while the engine is running, pull over safely, switch it off and arrange a tow. The Austin shop also advises towing for significant oil loss or oil dripping onto the exhaust or soaking the belt.
For a small seep without those signs, check the oil level on level ground using your car’s instructions and arrange an inspection. Keep within the marked range with the specified oil; topping up does not fix the leak.

If the level falls but the outside of the engine stays dry, tell the shop. The engine may be burning oil internally, which calls for a different diagnosis from replacing an external gasket.
Check Coverage Before Paying
Kia extended coverage for a leaking oil pressure switch on eligible 3.3 GDI vehicles to 15 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, from first use. Its WTY026 notice includes these models:
- 2014 to 2018 Sorento, built December 17, 2012 to March 7, 2018.
- 2014 to 2016 Cadenza, built February 1, 2013 to January 7, 2016.
- 2015 to 2018 Sedona, built July 21, 2014 to December 6, 2017.
A Kia dealer can check eligibility using your VIN. The notice covers diagnosis of the described symptoms and replacement when the switch is responsible. It does not cover every oil leak or the Optima owner’s repair above.
Questions About Oil Leak Repair Prices
Does the size of the puddle tell me how expensive the repair is?
No. A small leak from a hard-to-reach seal can involve more labor than a larger leak at an accessible filter. Where the oil escapes matters more than the stain’s size.
Should I use an oil stop-leak additive?
Irish Mike’s describes additives as a temporary measure for minor seepage, not a repair. They cannot fix a cracked part or an incorrectly fitted filter, so I would put the money toward finding the source.
Can two leaking gaskets be fixed in the same visit?
Yes. Ask for an itemized quote showing the extra parts and labor for each. Ask whether fixing both leaks together would save any labor.
Is an oil leak worth fixing on an older car?
Compare the confirmed repair with the car’s condition and the cost of replacing it. A sound car with an accessible gasket leak is a different decision from one needing engine repairs as well.
