You smell burning oil, there is oil on top of the engine or smoke from under the hood, and the shop says the valve cover gasket is leaking. You want to know what the fix costs before you say yes.
So how much does valve cover gasket replacement cost? Owners told NHTSA, the US road safety agency, they paid or were quoted $454.62 to $1,150 at dealers and repair shops since 2023, for a gasket or a new cover.
With Ford’s own parts and job time, both covers on a Mustang 5.0 come to $655.28. A whole new cover on a V6 can cost far more: $2,173.51 at a Toyota dealer for a 2018 Highlander.
In this guide I will show you what owners paid, what the carmakers’ parts and times come to, the free fixes and redesigned covers, why you should not wait, and how to tell the gasket is leaking.
What Owners Paid
Here is what owners told NHTSA they paid or were quoted, with a link to each complaint:
- A Kia dealer found the valve cover of a 2011 Sorento warped and leaking oil onto the exhaust, and quoted $454.62 for a new cover, filed in March 2024.
- An Acura dealer recommended replacing the leaking valve cover gasket of a 2019 RDX at 43,818 miles for $500 plus tax, filed in July 2026.
- A new valve cover, gasket and PCV hose on a 2014 Chevrolet Sonic cost $840.96, filed in April 2023.
- A dealer fixed the leaking valve cover gasket of a 2013 Ford Escape EcoBoost for $1,150, filed in April 2023.
- A Toyota dealer priced a new valve cover and gasket for a 2018 Highlander V6 at 52,500 miles at $2,173.51, filed in August 2024.
So owners paid or were quoted $454.62 to $1,150 for most jobs, and more when the whole cover is replaced on a V6.

What the Carmakers’ Parts and Times Come To
Ford found that the valve covers of 2015 to 2017 Mustangs with the 5.0 V8 can warp from heat and leak. Its fix takes both covers off and adds bolts, and Ford pays its dealers 3.8 hours for it.
With Ford’s parts on a dealer parts website, checked October 9, 2026, and $132 an hour, Tekmetric’s US average from June 2026:
So both covers come to $153.68 in parts and $655.28 in all. Most of the bill is labor, because there are two covers to take off and put back.
A four cylinder takes far less. Mitsubishi pays its dealers 0.7 hour, $92.40 at $132 an hour, for the rocker cover gasket of a 2014 to 2016 Outlander 2.4, under its powertrain warranty.
Luxury Auto Works, a repair shop in Austin that works on imported cars, counts 2 to 5 hours, by the number of cylinders and what is in the way. It also replaces brittle grommets and checks the coils and spark plugs while the cover is off.

Free Fixes and Redesigned Covers
Hyundai fixes 2007 to 2009 Santa Fe models with the 3.3 V6 free in service campaign 976, because oil from the front valve cover can reach the alternator and shut down the charging system. Dealers replace the gasket and fit an oil guard.
Chrysler told its dealers in May 2022 that a right valve cover leak on 2021 and 2022 models with the 3.6 V6 can come back if only the gasket is replaced. It changed the cover’s design, and the new cover is $207 with its gasket.
On the same engine, Chrysler’s 2025 bulletin on oil in the engine’s valley says a valve cover leak needs a new cover or gasket, not a new oil filter housing. So ask the shop to show you where the oil comes from.
Honda and Toyota have also looked into valve cover leaks, on 2018 and 2019 Civics with the 2.0 and on 2020 to 2022 models with Toyota’s 2.5 four cylinder. If yours leaks under warranty, ask the dealer to check.
Why You Should Not Wait
Oil from a valve cover can drip onto the hot exhaust and smoke or burn. GM recalled 2004 Buick Regal, Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo and Pontiac Grand Prix models with the 3.8 V6 for an oil leak onto the exhaust manifold.
The oil can also ruin other parts. On a 2017 Audi Q5, oil from the valve cover reached the thermostat seal and made it leak coolant, and the two repairs cost $2,431, filed in June 2026.
How to Tell the Valve Cover Gasket Is Leaking
Look for a burning oil smell after driving, smoke from under the hood, and oil on top of the engine or down its sides. The Austin shop also mentions an oily film around the valve covers on the engine.
Oil that soaks the ignition coils or spark plugs can cause rough running or misfires, the shop notes. If the engine starts to miss along with a leak, have the cover checked first.
