You go in for an oil change and come back with a list of filters, fluids and other work. Before approving it all, you want to know how much keeping the car running should actually cost.
So AAA’s 2026 allowance for maintenance, repairs and tires is 11.7 cents a mile. At 15,000 miles a year, the sum is 15,000 x $0.117 = $1,755, or $1,755 / 12 = $146.25 a month.
I will help you separate that yearly budget from the price of a service visit, using a Florida shop’s menu and what three owners spent on older cars.
How Much Should You Budget Each Year?
AAA’s 2026 Your Driving Costs study covers new vehicles over five years and 75,000 miles. Its allowance includes scheduled work, wear repairs, an extended warranty and replacement tires.
Fuel, insurance, registration and the car payment need their own budget. Also, this is an average across new vehicles in the study, not a prediction of a particular older car’s next repair.
You will not spend the same amount every month. A quiet stretch between services can be followed by tires, brakes and a larger scheduled visit close together.

What a Routine Service Visit Costs
Johnny’s Automotive, with six Florida shops, publishes these October 2026 prices. Tax, shop supplies and environmental fees are added at checkout.
An oil change and rotation at Johnny’s start at $79 + $25 = $104 before fees. Adding both listed filters makes that $79 + $25 + $45 + $45 = $194 before fees.

Start With the Work Your Car Is Due For
Check the maintenance schedule for your model, engine and driving conditions. Give the shop your service history so work already completed does not get sold again just because the mileage matches a package name.
I would ask the service adviser to mark each recommendation as due by time, due by mileage or needed because of something found during inspection. That makes a long list much easier to understand.
Keep receipts even for work you do yourself. Record the date, mileage, parts and fluids used, so the next service decision starts with what was done rather than a guess.
What Owners Spent on Older Cars
The following DC Urban Moms posts concern older vehicles in a US discussion. The jobs and time periods differ, which is why I would not average these into a supposed routine-service price.
- On September 18, 2025, a 2015 Acura TLX owner at 150,000 miles reported about $2,000 a year in repairs over roughly three years.
- Later that day, an owner of a 17-year-old Toyota described a recent $1,400 spend on a tire, rear brakes, a battery and other work.
- On September 19, 2025, a 2000 Volvo wagon owner reported spending roughly $2,000 a year, mentioning suspension, electrical and other repairs alongside wear items.
For an older car, I would keep a repair reserve beside the planned service money. An inspection can help you decide whether the next expense is a worn part or a bigger problem worth considering before you spend.
Compare the Same Work Before Buying a Package
Get an itemized estimate with parts, labor and fees.
Ask which recommended jobs can wait and which affect safe operation now. A low package price is less useful if the work your car actually needs will be added afterward.
Questions About Car Maintenance Costs
How much is car maintenance per month?
Using AAA’s 2026 maintenance, repairs and tires allowance, 15,000 x $0.117 = $1,755 a year, then $1,755 / 12 = $146.25 a month. Routine servicing alone is a narrower category.
Does the yearly allowance include gas and insurance?
No. AAA accounts for fuel, insurance, registration, finance and depreciation separately. The maintenance allowance includes more than oil changes, including wear repairs and tires.
How much is an oil change with a tire rotation?
At Johnny’s Automotive in Florida, the published starting sum is $79 + $25 = $104 before added fees. Oil requirements and vehicle details can change the final bill.
Are the service-menu prices the final total?
Johnny’s Automotive adds tax, shop supplies and environmental fees at checkout. Larger engines and specialty oils can increase its oil-change price.
Where These Prices Come From
Checked October 28, 2026. The annual examples use AAA’s 2026 US study. The service prices are one Florida company’s menu; owner reports retain their September 2025 dates.
