You ask for a transmission fluid change and receive a quote for a flush, a filter service or both. Before comparing the total with a menu price, ask which job the shop is actually proposing.
So Express Auto Care in Miami prices drain-and-refill at $69.99, a transmission flush at $119.95, and automatic filter-and-fluid service at $199. Auto City in El Cajon, California advertises a fluid exchange at $199.
I checked these provider pages on October 22, 2026. I will compare the service descriptions, explain the missing quote details and show why an owner’s larger bill may cover more than fresh transmission fluid.
Published Transmission Service Menus
Express Auto Care’s page lists these services separately. Its booking menu also identifies the $199 service as filter replacement and fluid change.
Auto City describes draining old fluid and refilling with new fluid. Its offer applies to most makes and models, with additional parts or labor possible for highline, luxury and commercial vehicles.
Those descriptions do not establish the same fluid quantity, filter work or exchange method. Ask for the complete total for your exact vehicle, including fluid, parts, labor, fees and tax.
Drain, Exchange or Pan and Filter?
A service name needs an explanation beside it. Have the shop describe how it will remove the old fluid, what it will refill and whether the proposed work includes a serviceable filter or pan parts.
The Miami menu is a useful example because it prices drain-and-refill, flushing and filter-and-fluid work as separate tasks. Its smallest number does not buy every item on that menu.

Do not assume a service replaces every drop or includes a new filter because the advertisement says “flush.” Ask what the vehicle-specific procedure requires and what the written estimate includes.
The removed-pan photograph illustrates access to an automatic transmission pan. The fluid bottles below show one specification, not the correct fluid for every vehicle mentioned in this guide.

What Ranger Owners Reported in 2026
These three US members described different purchases in a Ranger transmission-service thread. I would compare their scope before comparing their totals.
- Missoula, Montana member MontanaRanger posted on March 3, 2026 that dealer full service had cost about $600 the previous year. He used Ford rewards points toward the visit.
- Los Angeles member CLopey posted on March 16, 2026 that a simple drain-and-fill cost $359 plus tax at 56,000 miles. The filter was not changed.
- Cold Spring, New York member redone17 posted on March 15, 2026 about paying around $500 while supplying his own fluid, filter, seals and aftermarket pan. His work also included the differentials and transfer case.
The New York amount is neither a complete shop-supplied transmission package nor a transmission-only bill. Adding a guessed parts amount or subtracting guessed differential work would invent a price he did not report.
Which Service Does Your Vehicle Need?
Use the maintenance schedule for the exact year, model and transmission. Ask the shop to identify the fluid specification, required service method and the reason it recommends the work at your mileage.
Have the estimate identify any filter, gasket, seal or replacement pan. Confirm the included fluid quantity and how extra fluid or additional access work would affect the total.
A CVT, dual-clutch gearbox and conventional automatic should not be assumed to share one fluid or procedure. The menu prices above do not establish compatibility with every transmission.
Keep Repairs Separate From Scheduled Service
If fluid is escaping, ask the shop to identify the leak and quote that repair separately. My transmission leak repair guide covers a different scope from scheduled fluid maintenance.
If the vehicle has shifting symptoms, request a diagnosis before treating a fluid service as a promised repair. The price of fresh fluid alone does not establish the cause of a transmission fault.
For a larger maintenance visit, ask to separate transmission work from differentials and transfer-case service. Keep any owner-supplied parts visible on the estimate so the total remains useful for comparison.
I would book once the shop has named the fluid, procedure, filter work and complete fitted price. That is much more useful than choosing between two advertisements with different service names.
Transmission Fluid Price Questions
How much does it cost to change transmission fluid?
Express Auto Care’s Miami menu shows $69.99 for drain-and-refill and $199 for automatic filter-and-fluid service. Auto City’s El Cajon exchange is $199 for most makes and models, with exceptions. Request a vehicle-specific total.
Is a flush the same as a filter change?
Do not assume so. The Miami provider lists a flush separately from its filter-and-fluid service. Ask exactly which parts and procedure your quote includes.
Does the $199 exchange include a transmission repair?
Auto City advertises fluid service, not a repair of a diagnosed transmission fault. Any leak, damaged part or shifting problem needs its own description and estimate.
Can I compare a bill when the owner supplied the parts?
Only after noting those missing costs and any bundled work. The New York Ranger report includes owner-supplied parts plus differential and transfer-case work, so its total is not a complete transmission-only retail price.
