Short answer

Compare steering rack quote scopes, alignment and coding costs, owner bills and a Honda recall that repairs smaller gearbox parts.

The steering feels heavy or catches as you turn, and the shop has recommended a complete rack. Before paying for that assembly, you need to know what failed and what the replacement price includes.

So steering rack replacement with a fluid flush and alignment costs $700 to $1,400 on Three Brothers Auto Repair’s East Rutherford, New Jersey menu. Luxury Auto Works gives $1,600 to $3,800 for many luxury imports in Austin.

Let me show you the different quote scopes, the extra work some electric racks need and a recall repair worth checking before buying an assembly. These are providers’ published prices, checked October 27, 2026.

I would ask for the rack’s part number and whether it is new or remanufactured. The shop menu alone does not identify the exact replacement unit your car will receive.

Why Some Cars Cost Much More

Luxury Auto Works gives $900 to $2,500 or more for new original-equipment racks on European models. Its installed range above reflects parts, access and the model being repaired.

The Austin shop describes extra work around subframes and tight engine bays. It also gives $120 to $180 for a four-wheel alignment and $100 to $250 for electric-steering resets or coding, depending on the platform.

Have the shop mark which of those items are already in its installed total. Adding every published allowance to a complete quote would count some work twice.

A hydraulic rack uses pressurized fluid for assistance. An electric power steering rack uses a motor and controls, so its fitting and setup requirements can differ even when both assemblies are called rack and pinion.

Make Sure the Rack Is the Failed Part

Three Brothers describes checking fluid condition, hoses, tie rods and the steering pump during diagnosis. A leak near the rack or a noise when turning is a reason to investigate, rather than an automatic parts order.

For hydraulic steering, find out whether the leak is from a hose connection or the rack itself. If the pump is the problem, our power steering pump guide covers that separate repair.

Loose steering can also involve a tie rod end. I would want the inspection findings and any electric-steering fault codes explained before approving a complete rack.

A Honda Recall Can Mean a Smaller Repair

NHTSA campaign 24V744000 covers certain Honda and Acura vehicles with excessive internal steering-gearbox friction. The remedy is a worm-gear spring replacement and grease work, free of charge for affected vehicles.

For eligible 2023 to 2025 CR-Vs and CR-V Hybrids, Honda bulletin 24-117 describes replacing the end cap, spring and spring seat, then injecting grease. Its March 27, 2025 revision does not prescribe a complete rack swap.

Honda bulletin 24-117 March 27, 2025 for eligible CR-V gearboxes: replace end cap, spring and spring seat and inject grease. Complete rack replacement is not this procedure; VIN eligibility must be checked.

Check your VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup and have Honda confirm eligibility. The bulletin also includes the 2025 CR-V e:FCEV, but a matching model name alone does not establish coverage.

This is a dealer repair, not a suggestion to open or grease a steering gearbox yourself. The failed part and applicable procedure still need identifying.

Owner Bills and Dealer Quotes

These US owner accounts on CarComplaints describe older vehicles. I have kept the quotes separate from a reported completed repair.

The Subaru owner later sought reimbursement and reported that Subaru said the VIN was outside the recall. That is why the vehicle’s actual coverage matters more than finding a similar story online.

What Should Be on the Finished Quote?

Look for the rack, required hardware, installation, alignment and any programming. A hydraulic job should identify fluid and flushing; an electric job should identify the setup or calibration needed for that model.

Also ask whether an advertised part price carries a refundable core deposit. If there is one, confirm the return conditions and whether the shop handles the old assembly.

The wheel alignment guide explains that part of the visit. After rack work, an off-center wheel or warning light needs resolving before you consider the job finished.

If steering suddenly becomes very difficult or you cannot control the vehicle normally, stop safely and arrange recovery. Keep the car out of use until the steering fault has been assessed.

Questions About Steering Rack Replacement

How much is a steering rack fitted and aligned?

Three Brothers Auto Repair’s New Jersey menu gives $700-$1,400 for replacement with a fluid flush and alignment. Different vehicles and electric-steering setup can produce higher quotes.

Is labor included in a rack price?

A parts listing may be for the assembly alone. Three Brothers separates its $300-$600 customer-supplied-rack labor price from replacement packages. Confirm which kind of quote you have.

Does electric steering always need the whole rack replaced?

No. The failure determines the repair. Honda’s 24-117 recall bulletin specifies smaller parts and grease work for eligible CR-V gearboxes, rather than a complete rack.

Can a new rack need programming?

Yes, on some electric systems. Luxury Auto Works identifies steering-angle resets, coding and adaptations as possible platform-specific work.
