Your steering wheel sits a little off center, the car wanders on the highway, and a front tire is wearing fast on one edge. The shop lifts the car and tells you a tie rod end is worn. Now you have a quote in your hand.
So how much does a tie rod end replacement cost? About $285 to $628 for both outer tie rod ends at a shop, including the alignment you need afterwards. An aftermarket pair of the parts alone is $32.70 to $38.51.
In this guide I will show you what the parts cost from Toyota and Detroit Axle, what a shop charges for each side, what owners paid, and what you need if you want to do it yourself.
Is It Really the Tie Rods?
Each front wheel has an outer tie rod end at the wheel and an inner tie rod at the steering rack. Together they set the toe, which is how far your wheels point in or out.
Luxury Auto Works, a repair shop in Austin, Texas, gives these as the signs of worn tie rods:
- Loose steering that wanders, so you keep making small corrections.
- Clunking over bumps or in slow turns.
- A steering wheel that is not straight when the car goes straight.
- Fast or uneven wear on the inner or outer edge of the tires.
- Vibration in the wheel, more noticeable around 50 to 70 mph.
A worn ball joint or sway bar link can clunk too. So ask the shop to show you the play in the tie rod before you pay.
What the Parts Cost
Tie rod ends are cheap from a parts shop. Here are prices I checked on October 5, 2026, with the Toyota parts from ToyotaPartsDeal, a Toyota dealer’s parts website:
Detroit Axle gives its tie rods a 10-year warranty. The Toyota pair for a Camry costs almost five times the Detroit Axle pair, and even that is about 30% under Toyota’s list price.
What a Shop Charges
The same Austin shop publishes its own prices for each side, fitted:
The shop calls the alignment non-negotiable, because a new tie rod changes the toe. It also writes that BMW, Audi, Mercedes and other European models tend to cost more.

You can also work it out from the time. Tekmetric, a company that makes software for repair shops, found the average US labor rate was $132 an hour in June 2026. Two outer ends at 30 to 60 minutes each is 1 to 2 hours, so $132 to $264.
Now add the parts and the alignment. A $32.70 pair, 1 hour and a $120 alignment is $32.70 + $132 + $120 = $284.70. The Toyota Camry pair, 2 hours and a $180 alignment is $184.06 + $264 + $180 = $628.06.
What Owners Paid
Here is what owners on Tesla Motors Club and Tacoma World paid or were quoted, with links to their posts:
- A Model S owner in Southern California was told by Tesla that the bent tie rods needed a new steering rack for $4,500, in September 2022.
- A mechanic then replaced just the inner tie rod ends for $198.24 in NAPA parts and $120 in labor, with a free alignment, so $318.24 in total, in October 2022. It took about 3 hours.
- A Tacoma owner bought Toyota inner tie rods with boots and clamps for about $220 and paid $130 in labor and $50 for the alignment, so $400 in total, in September 2019.
- In the same thread another owner found the paperwork for a Toyota dealer job: $981 for a steering rack and inner rods, which the owner thought included labor.
So if a dealer quotes you a whole steering rack for a tie rod problem, ask whether the tie rods alone can be replaced. The Model S owner paid about 7% of Tesla’s quote that way.

Can You Do It Yourself?
You can do the outer ends at home if you have the tools. The Austin shop lists a tie rod separator, penetrating oil, a torque wrench, an inner tie rod tool for the inner ones, and sometimes heat for a seized adjuster.
Measure or mark the old tie rod’s length before you take it off. Then the toe is close enough to drive carefully to the alignment shop, which you still need afterwards.
The inner ones are harder. A Tacoma owner who replaced them in 2022 needed a 36mm wrench on a very narrow flat and ended up using a pipe wrench.

Part prices are the ones above, checked October 5, 2026. Labor uses the Austin shop's times, at $132 an hour, Tekmetric's US average (June 2026). Alignment is that shop's $120 to $180.
Answers to the Questions That Come Up
How much does it cost to replace a tie rod end?
About $285 to $628 for both outer ends at a shop with an alignment, using the parts above, 1 to 2 hours at $132 an hour and a $120 to $180 alignment. Luxury Auto Works in Austin charges $200 to $450 for one outer end, fitted.
How much does an inner tie rod replacement cost?
The Austin shop above charges $250 to $550 per side, fitted. A Model S owner paid $318.24 for both inner tie rod ends with parts and labor, and a Tacoma owner paid about $400 with the alignment.
Do I need an alignment after replacing tie rods?
Yes. A new tie rod changes the toe, and the Austin shop calls the alignment non-negotiable. It charges $120 to $180 for a four-wheel alignment.
Should I replace both tie rod ends at once?
It often makes sense. Detroit Axle sells the outer ends as a pair for $32.70 to $38.51, and you pay for one alignment whether you replace one side or two.
Is it safe to drive with a bad tie rod?
Not for long. A worn tie rod adds play to the steering, and the shop above calls it a safety-critical repair, so have it fixed soon.
