You want to carry bikes or pull a small trailer, and the hitch price looks reasonable. Then the quote adds wiring and fitting. Those extras can make the finished job cost quite a bit more than the receiver alone.
So the cost of a trailer hitch and installation is about $385 to $445 for a basic hitch at Airport Welding & Muffler in Snohomish, Washington. Its separate four-way wiring kit costs $185 to $285 fitted.
I will work through those prices, compare labor-only charges and show what owners paid. This guide focuses on a rear receiver hitch, rather than a fifth-wheel or gooseneck system in a truck bed.
Hitch and Installation Prices
Airport Welding describes its figures as approximate, with the vehicle affecting the work. The prices were checked October 27, 2026, and should be confirmed for your exact year, model and intended use.
Combining Airport Welding’s lower figures gives $385 + $185 = $570 for a basic hitch and four-way wiring. Combining the upper figures gives $445 + $285 = $730. Those are sums from its menu, before any other quoted items.

Red Hot Welding’s starting hitch price and four-flat wiring give $350 + $175 = $525 or more. Ask whether the ball, ball mount, pin, tax and any vehicle-specific additions are in the total.
What Installation Labor Alone Costs
If you already own a hitch, ask whether the shop will install a customer-supplied part. Check the part number and mounting hardware before booking, since the labor price does not buy missing components.
Trailer Boss publishes a separate hitch-and-wiring labor sheet at $145 an hour. These are labor charges, not complete parts-and-installation packages:
The bumper rows describe two different access conditions. Do not automatically add both surcharges to one job. Have the installer identify which condition applies.
Bike Rack or Trailer: Buy the Right Setup
For a bike rack, the receiver and rack must fit each other and stay within their load limits. A rack installation does not automatically require the same towing electrical package as a trailer.
For towing, the ball mount slides into the receiver and carries the hitch ball. Wiring connects the trailer’s lights; an electrically braked trailer can also need a brake controller and compatible connections.

I would tell the installer what you plan to attach, including its loaded weight. CURT directs drivers to use the lowest-rated towing component as the limit, alongside the vehicle’s ratings.
A higher-rated receiver does not increase your car’s approved towing capacity. Match the vehicle, hitch, ball mount and trailer before choosing equipment by price.
What Owners Paid for Hitch Work
These older US accounts describe different jobs. The bike-rack visits do not establish a price for a complete trailer-towing package.
- Sonoma owner Mia reported $250 for a hitch supplied and installed at U-Haul in Santa Rosa, plus a $5 warranty, on March 24, 2021. The hitch was used for a bike rack.
- Oregon member Soona described a $150 independent-installer visit on March 7, 2021, for work done the previous year. The post does not itemize parts and labor.
How Long Does Fitting Take?
U-Haul gives two to three hours as its average hitch installation time, with the vehicle and package affecting the appointment. Confirm parts availability before leaving the car.
Some jobs need the bumper removed or trim cut, while others bolt onto existing mounting points. Ask to see any planned visible trimming before the work begins.
If you are comparing the cost of towing a car instead, the tow truck cost guide covers a hired tow. A receiver-hitch installation is a different purchase.
Questions About Trailer Hitch Costs
How much is a hitch with wiring installed?
Airport Welding’s approximate menu gives $385-$445 for a basic hitch fitted, plus $185-$285 for four-way wiring fitted. The endpoint sums are $570 and $730 before other quoted items.
Can I pay only for installation?
Ask the installer about customer-supplied parts. Trailer Boss publishes labor-only hitch-and-wiring prices, including $290-$362.50 for its compact-car example. You still need the correct parts.
Does a bike rack need trailer wiring?
A bike rack uses the receiver; trailer wiring serves the trailer’s lights.
Does a hitch let me tow more than my car’s rating?
No. The vehicle’s limits still apply, and CURT directs you to respect the lowest-rated component in the towing setup.
