You keep adding oil, but there is no puddle under the car. Then the shop mentions piston rings and gives you a quote that sounds closer to an engine replacement than a small repair.
So how much does piston ring replacement cost? Two 2015 Odyssey owners on CarComplaints reported a $3,000 dealer quote and a $6,909 completed repair. Those are useful examples, rather than a price for every engine.
The rings themselves cost much less. Getting the pistons out, checking the engine and putting it back together is the expensive part. I will show you the parts, the work involved and when replacing the engine deserves a look.
What Owners Paid or Were Quoted
These US owners described different repair scopes. Keep the dates in mind when comparing them with a quote today:
- A Pennsylvania owner of a 2015 Odyssey reported a $3,000 piston ring quote, with the manufacturer offering to reduce it to $1,500. The March 5, 2020 report does not confirm payment.
- An Illinois owner of a 2015 Odyssey reported a $6,909 repair in a November 19, 2023 complaint. It replaced rings on cylinders 1 to 3 and spark plugs on cylinders 1 to 4, at 95,185 miles.
- A California Camry owner described August 2017 dealer quotes of $5,000 for piston rings or $4,000 for an engine replacement. The complaint carries an October 17, 2015 date but describes later visits.
The Camry report does not identify whether the replacement engine was used, rebuilt or new.
How Much Are the Rings Themselves?
At HondaPartsNow, genuine ring set 13011-5G0-A02 is $58.49, superseded by 13011-R70-A12. Each package serves one piston, even though the page shows six required for a whole V6.
The listing covers selected Accord, Odyssey, Pilot and Ridgeline engines. Here is the ring-only arithmetic using that dealer site’s price, before tax and shipping:
Gaskets, fluids, spark plugs and any damaged pistons are separate. The correct ring size also depends on the engine and its bore measurements, so buying the cheapest set before inspection can waste money.
Why Replacing Rings Means Opening the Engine
Piston rings sit in grooves around each piston, inside the cylinder. The upper rings help seal combustion pressure; the oil control ring regulates the oil film on the cylinder wall.

To replace them, the mechanic has to remove the pistons. That means access through the cylinder head and the bottom of the engine, along with cleaning, inspection and careful reassembly.
Honda’s bulletin 13-081 shows the work on selected 2011 to 2013 Odysseys. Its procedure removes the timing belt, the affected cylinder head, oil pan and connecting rod caps before the pistons come out.
It allows 8.5 hours for rings on cylinders 1 to 3 and plugs on cylinders 1 to 4, including diagnosis. Cylinder 4 ring replacement adds 0.8 hour. These are warranty times, not a retail labor quote.
The engine does not always have to leave the car. That procedure specifically avoids complete engine and transmission removal. Other engines have different access needs.
Cleaning the ring grooves and fitting the rings correctly matter too. The bulletin warns that incorrectly positioned ring gaps can let excessive combustion gas escape past the pistons, called blow-by.
Make Sure the Oil Loss Really Comes From Rings
Oil burning, blue exhaust smoke and oily spark plugs can point toward internal trouble. But worn rings are only one possible cause.
Luxury Auto Works in Austin names crankcase ventilation problems and turbo seals as other possible causes of rising oil use.
If the engine is wet on the outside, start with an oil leak diagnosis. A leaking gasket and oil burning inside a cylinder need different repairs.
A compression test measures the pressure each cylinder builds while cranking. A leak-down test helps locate where pressure escapes, such as through the valves or past the piston.
The oil control ring has a different job from the compression rings. Good compression readings alone do not settle an oil-burning complaint; the shop should also measure oil use and inspect the likely sources.
For this Honda repair, the mechanic first checks for specific misfire codes and fouled spark plugs. If those conditions are absent, the bulletin directs the technician back to normal troubleshooting.
When Rings Alone Will Not Be Enough
A fresh ring set needs a suitable piston and cylinder surface. Motorservice’s repair guide warns that fitting new rings to worn pistons or cylinders will not deliver the desired results.

Cracked pistons, damaged grooves or cylinders worn beyond the maker’s limits can turn a ring job into a rebuild or replacement. A quick surface clean cannot correct a cylinder that is no longer the right shape.
Ask the shop to separate the known repair from anything it can only confirm after opening the engine. Agree on the inspection charge and when it must call you before doing more work.
Your written estimate should name the cylinders being repaired, rings or pistons supplied, gaskets and fluids, labor hours, any machine shop work, and the repair warranty.
Timing parts may already be exposed. If they are due for replacement, ask for the extra cost while access is available. Removing a timing belt for this job does not itself mean you need a new belt kit.
When a Used, Rebuilt or New Engine Makes More Sense
If the rest of the engine is healthy and the cylinder measurements are within limits, repairing the rings can preserve an engine whose history you know.
Once the quote includes damaged pistons, cylinder machining or bearing repairs, I would compare the complete fitted repair with a replacement engine. The labor saved on rebuilding can change which option costs less.
- A used engine may save money upfront. Check its mileage, exact compatibility and oil consumption history, especially if it shares the same ring design as your old engine.
- A remanufactured engine has been rebuilt. Ask what was renewed and whether any known oil consumption problem was addressed. It is different from a factory-new engine.
- A new engine can be worth considering when extensive machining makes repairing yours expensive. Compare the installed total and warranty; a bare block price leaves much of the job unpaid.
Include installation, transferred accessories, fluids, freight and any core deposit in that comparison. Also check whether the warranty pays labor if the replacement fails.
For a truck-specific example, my Ford F-150 engine replacement guide separates engine prices from fitting costs.
If the body is rusty or the transmission also needs major work, weigh the whole car’s condition before spending on the engine. A sound car you plan to keep gives you more reason to invest in a lasting repair.
Honda Owners: Check the Warranty Extension
The manufacturer’s owner notice covers certain 2013 to 2015 Pilots and 2013 to 2017 Odysseys with piston-ring-related misfires. The extension is 10 years from original purchase or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first.
The separate offer covering affected vehicles regardless of age or mileage ended January 31, 2026. It should not be treated as an open offer now.
Give a dealer your VIN and service history to check eligibility. The notice requires the dealer to confirm the covered condition; it also mentions possible reimbursement for earlier repairs, subject to eligibility.
Questions About Piston Ring Replacement
What should I do after the repair?
Get the shop’s running-in instructions and oil check schedule. Motorservice recommends monitoring oil closely during running-in and changing the oil and filter afterward; use the schedule specified for your repaired engine.
Can I replace piston rings myself?
This is advanced engine work, with measurements, special tools and precise assembly steps. The bulletin is intended for trained technicians. A mistake can leave you paying to open the engine again.
Can I keep driving while it burns oil?
Do not let the oil level fall below the marked range. If the oil pressure warning comes on, the engine knocks or the check engine light flashes with rough running, stop safely and arrange help. Topping up cannot repair the rings.
