A deep knock from the engine is bad enough. Then the mechanic mentions rod bearings, and you find prices ranging from a bearing service to a whole replacement engine. Those are very different jobs.
So how much does rod bearing replacement cost? Mporium BMW in McKinney, Texas, advertises starting prices of $2,199 to $4,999 across its S54, S55, S65 and S85 bearing services.
Those are BMW service packages, not a national range for fixing a knocking engine. If a bearing has damaged the crankshaft or connecting rod, the repair needs its own inspection and quote.
I will show you what those packages include, what owners paid or were quoted, and which recall or warranty checks could save you from paying for the engine yourself.
If the Engine Is Knocking Now
If a new deep knock comes with an oil pressure warning, rough running or loss of power, pull over safely, switch off and arrange a tow. Do not keep restarting it to demonstrate the noise.
Honda’s connecting rod recall describes bearing seizure that can damage the engine, cause stalling and increase fire or crash risk. A sound alone cannot tell you how much damage is inside.
Check Who Pays Before Authorizing a Repair
A bearing failure does not automatically mean you owe the entire bill. Give the dealer your VIN, mileage and service records before approving a paid teardown, and ask about both recalls and extended engine coverage.
Honda and Acura Recall 23V751
Recall 23V751 covers certain 2015 to 2020 Acura TLXs, 2016 to 2020 MDXs, 2016 and 2018 to 2019 Pilots, 2017 and 2019 Ridgelines, and 2018 to 2019 Odysseys.
Affected engines can have a manufacturing defect that wears the connecting rod bearings. The remedy is inspection and repair or engine replacement as needed, free of charge. Model year alone does not establish eligibility.
Honda’s recall notice also allows reimbursement for eligible repairs owners already paid for. Keep the invoice and ask the dealer to review it under the recall reimbursement plan.
Hyundai Bearing Warranty Extensions
Hyundai bulletin 22-EM-001H-1 gives limited lifetime coverage for qualifying bearing-related engine repairs under TXXI. It applies to certain Theta II engines in Sonata, Santa Fe Sport, Santa Fe and Tucson models.
It covers original and subsequent owners, subject to settlement conditions. These include the knock sensor software update, neglect, salvage history and commercial ownership restrictions.
Your dealer must submit a warranty prior approval request for the repair.
The separate TXXM program covers qualifying connecting rod bearing failures for 15 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first, including subsequent owners.
Its model list includes certain Tucson, Elantra, Veloster, Santa Fe and Sonata Hybrid engines. KSDS software is generally required; vehicles recalled under 198 or 209 are exempt from that requirement.
TXXM excludes salvaged vehicles and the commercial owners described in its terms. An extended warranty is separate from a safety recall, so an empty recall lookup does not settle a warranty claim.
Published Rod Bearing Service Prices
Here are Mporium BMW’s advertised starting prices, checked October 17, 2026. They include the bearing replacement work, rather than just loose bearing shells:
The packages include engine mounts, associated gaskets and seals, oil and a filter. The V10 service also addresses items such as piston oilers and the VANOS high-pressure oil pipe and chain rails.
That extra work matters when comparing quotes. Confirm tax and any additional repairs with the shop; a starting price is not a maximum bill.

Why a Small Bearing Can Mean a Big Job
The rod bearing sits inside the large end of the connecting rod, around a crankshaft journal. The journal is the smooth round surface that the rod turns around as the piston moves.
MAHLE explains that engine bearings rely on an oil film to separate the moving metal surfaces. Loss of that film or excessive load can damage a bearing, and the cause must be corrected before new parts go in.

Access takes work too. Mporium’s BMW procedures remove the subframe and oil pan, clean the pan and oil pickup, inspect the crank journals and install the bearings and rod bolts.
A bearing service on a usable crankshaft is one job. A scored journal, damaged rod or debris spread through the engine calls for a wider repair assessment. Buying fresh shells does not answer those questions.
Honda’s Odyssey bulletin 24-003 shows that distinction. Technicians submit bearing photos to an inspection team, which directs the repair. Its procedures include both bearing replacement and short block replacement.
Ask to see the inspection findings and measurements. Ask whether new bearings will be enough, or whether the engine needs machining, other parts or replacement.
What Owners Paid
These two US owner accounts show why the work on the invoice matters as much as the total. The older bills also give context, rather than today’s price for your car.
- A Tennessee owner of a 2008 Mazda3 reported $2,700 for the engine, rusted front suspension parts and tune-up parts. The post was published April 27, 2017, with a December 2016 problem date.
- A Portland owner of a 2018 Pilot reported an $8,411 Honda bill after a rod bearing failure required a replacement engine. The August 2, 2026 post describes a July breakdown during a trip through Idaho.
The Pilot owner’s travel, towing and rental expenses were additional. The post does not explain whether that vehicle qualified for the recall or whether any reimbursement followed.
What to Put on the Estimate
For a running engine booked for preventive work, compare the bearing brand, bolts, seals, oil, filter and any bundled engine mounts. Ask what happens if inspection finds damage.
For an engine that has already failed, agree on the diagnostic or strip-down charge first. The shop should contact you with its findings before moving on to machining or replacement.
A useful written estimate separates parts, labor hours, machine shop work, fluids, freight and tax. Ask what warranty comes with the repair.
Repair the Bearings or Replace the Engine?
I would compare complete installed prices once the quote includes crankshaft work, damaged rods or wider internal damage. A bare replacement engine price leaves installation and several other costs unpaid.
For a used engine, ask about mileage, exact compatibility and whether its warranty pays labor if it fails. For a rebuilt engine, ask which internal parts were renewed.
Then weigh the repair against the car’s condition. A sound car you plan to keep deserves a different decision from one that also needs a transmission or substantial rust repair.
Questions About Rod Bearing Replacement
Is a rod bearing the same as a piston ring?
No. Rod bearings sit around crankshaft journals at the large ends of the connecting rods. Piston rings sit around the pistons inside the cylinders and do a different job.
Does the engine have to come out?
Not for every bearing service. The BMW shop procedures above access the bearings through the oil pan after removing the subframe. A damaged engine needing further work can require removal.
Can I replace rod bearings myself?
This is precision engine work. Bearing fit, crankshaft condition, cleanliness and correct fastener tightening all matter. A mistake can turn a planned service into another engine repair.
Is there a replacement mileage for every car?
No single interval fits all engines. A specialist’s preventive service recommendation for a BMW M engine should not be treated as the maintenance schedule for an unrelated car.
