You move a cabinet or open a damp wall and find mold behind it. Now you need to know how much cleanup will cost, and whether the quote also pays to stop the water and put the room back together.
So mold remediation for a single room is $1,500 to $6,000 in AdvantaClean of Fort Lauderdale’s South Florida pricing guide. Its small, isolated jobs are $500 to $1,500; multiple rooms or system involvement reach $6,000 to $15,000.
I will explain the work behind those regional estimates, the repairs that can sit outside them, and what US homeowners reported. A visible patch alone cannot tell you how far damage extends inside the wall.
What Size of Mold Problem Are You Pricing?
AdvantaClean’s August 19, 2026 guide separates these project scopes. They are planning figures, rather than a fixed offer for a house it has not inspected.
The company’s standard area guidance is $10 to $25 per square foot of contamination. Small-job minimums, difficult access and materials that need removal can raise the cost.

Measure the affected surfaces, not the whole home’s floor. One wall 10 feet wide and 8 feet high is 10 x 8 = 80 square feet before openings, though the mold may cover only part of it.
What Should the Remediation Quote Include?
Ask the contractor to identify the rooms, affected materials and boundary of the work. “Treat the basement” leaves too much unclear if another bid includes removing insulation and opening wall cavities.
Have the proposal describe containment, dust control, removal or cleaning, waste handling and drying. The plan should also explain how the crew will decide when cleanup is finished.
EPA’s homeowner guide calls for correcting the water problem and cleaning mold from hard surfaces with detergent and water, then drying them completely. Moldy porous materials can need disposal.
Painting over growth is not a substitute for that work. EPA advises cleaning and drying the surface before painting; the coating can peel if applied over mold.
Confirm whether an assessment, lab samples or post-remediation verification are included.
Fixing the Moisture Is a Separate Decision
Cleaning a wall will not stop rain coming through it. For water entering below ground, our basement leak repair guide explains the drainage and waterproofing choices.
For damp air and exposed soil beneath the house, see the crawl space encapsulation guide. A moisture-control system and removing contaminated materials need their own descriptions.
Ask who repairs the plumbing, roof or drainage fault that started the damage. Agree on the sequence so the remediator does not finish while the source still wets the same area.
Does Mold Removal Include New Drywall?
Find out where the contractor’s work ends. Removing affected board, drying the cavity and leaving it open is a different result from a finished and painted room.
The rebuilding quote may include insulation, board, trim, flooring and paint. Our drywall replacement guide covers the wall-finishing side once cleanup and drying are complete.
I would ask for cleanup, moisture-source repair and reconstruction on separate lines. You can then see which contractor is responsible for each stage without counting the same work twice.

What Homeowners Paid or Were Quoted
These Garage Journal posts are dated April 17, 2023. One describes completed attic work; the other is a quote sought for suspected mold in ducts.
- Buffalo, New York member b-boy reported $1,400 for attic remediation. In post #7, the owner described dry-ice treatment, an anti-fungal coating and sampling.
- Ashland, Virginia member vavet reported a $1,175 AdvantaClean quote after seeking duct-mold remediation. The post does not say whether the work went ahead, and the quote is not broken down.
These are different jobs and older amounts. Neither gives a rate you can apply to your home’s area.
Can You Clean a Small Area Yourself?
EPA explains that, in most cases, a moldy area under about 10 square feet can be handled by the homeowner using its cleanup guidance. Size is only one consideration.
Extensive water damage, sewage or suspected HVAC contamination changes that decision. EPA advises against running an HVAC system suspected of contamination because it can spread mold through the building.
For a suitable small cleanup, EPA recommends an N95 respirator, gloves and goggles that keep spores out of your eyes. People with health concerns should consult a health professional before starting.
A DIY cleanup is less suitable when you would have to disturb hidden growth behind wallpaper or inside a cavity. EPA’s testing guidance points readers toward an experienced professional for suspected hidden mold.
Is Mold Testing Always Necessary?
EPA’s testing page explains that visible growth usually does not need sampling. There are no federal mold-spore limits that a test can use to certify a home as meeting a federal mold standard.
Testing can still have a defined purpose, such as checking a cleaned surface. A project protocol or local requirements may call for verification, so clarify the purpose rather than automatically buying or refusing samples.
Questions About Mold Cleanup Costs
Is mold remediation priced by the whole house’s area?
AdvantaClean’s area guidance concerns the contaminated area. The affected wall, ceiling or materials need measuring; the house’s advertised floor area is not the cleanup quantity.
Does the cleanup price include fixing the leak?
AdvantaClean treats moisture-source repairs as separate work. Have the proposal state who will fix the leak and what that repair costs.
Must every moldy wall be replaced?
The material and damage matter. EPA describes cleaning hard surfaces, while porous materials can need disposal. Have the contractor explain which surfaces can stay and why.
Can a test prove the home meets an EPA mold limit?
EPA has no federal mold or mold-spore limit for that comparison. If testing is proposed, ask what it will measure and how its result will guide the project.
