A hole left by a plumber is one thing. A soft wall after a leak is another. Before you compare drywall replacement quotes, find out how much sound wall can stay.
So, replacing one 4-by-8-foot wall sheet costs $325 to $485 on ELF Home Services’ DFW price page, without complicated texture work. That is a fitted repair, not the price of a board.
I will walk you through patching, larger replacement jobs and the finishing work that can get left out of a quote. These are published US contractor prices, checked October 19, 2026.
Does It Need a Patch or a New Sheet?
If the surrounding board is firm and dry, a small opening can be repaired without stripping the entire wall. The size of the cut matters, but so do its edges, backing and the finish around it.
Here are three separate jobs from ELF’s Dallas-Fort Worth pricing table. The small-hole entry below uses its table, which differs from the broader range in its FAQ.
| Repair | Published Price | What the Entry Covers |
|---|---|---|
| Small hole, up to about 3 inches | $125 to $175 | ELF: patch, texture match, ready for paint |
| Hole about 6 to 12 inches | $185 to $285 | ELF: backing, patch, two mud coats and texture |
| Ceiling patch after a leak | $250 to $650 | ELF: source repaired and area dry first |
A ready-for-paint patch still leaves painting to settle. Ask for the final appearance you want, especially if the repaired spot catches light from a window.
How Larger Drywall Replacement Is Priced
SoCal Removal publishes $5 to $6.50 per square foot for replacement after removal, with board, hanging, tape and texture. Its minimum is $3,500 per job.
That minimum makes this a poor rate to multiply by one little hole. The company serves six Southern California counties and prices putting surfaces back after removal; demolition is a separate scope.
Measure the wall or ceiling surface being replaced, not the floor beneath it. A 10-foot-wide wall that is 8 feet tall has 10 x 8 = 80 square feet before any agreed deductions for openings.
The same SoCal page prices preparation, primer and two paint coats at $2.25 to $3 per square foot of surface. Exact color or texture matching is excluded.
Keep removal, replacement and painting on separate lines. That lets you see whether two bids actually end at the same finished wall, rather than assuming the cheaper one includes everything.
For low wall damage, the trim may also have to come off. Our baseboard replacement guide covers that part of the job.
What Does the Drywall Board Itself Cost?
The Kelly-Fradet catalog displays these sheet prices. They are materials only, before any delivery or tax shown at checkout.
| Board | Price Per Sheet |
|---|---|
| 1/2-inch, 4-by-8-foot lightweight drywall | Kelly-Fradet: $19.49 |
| 1/2-inch, 4-by-8-foot mold and moisture resistant drywall | Kelly-Fradet: $24.20 |
| 5/8-inch, 4-by-8-foot Firecode lightweight drywall | Kelly-Fradet: $22.10 |
A sheet covers 4 x 8 = 32 square feet, before cuts and waste. Tape, compound, fasteners, corner bead, tools and finishing time are still missing from that board price.

Have the installer identify the required thickness and board type before ordering. A fire-rated wall or ceiling needs its specified assembly restored; choosing the cheapest sheet alone does not settle that.
Wet Drywall and Mold Change the Job
A brown stain does not tell you whether the board can stay. EPA’s clean-water guidance allows drying wallboard in place if it has no obvious swelling and its seams remain intact.
Otherwise, that guidance calls for removing, discarding and replacing it. The table addresses a quick response within 24 to 48 hours to clean water, not sewage or a wall already growing mold.
For mold, EPA’s homeowner guide warns that porous materials may need disposal and says not to paint moldy surfaces. Larger areas or extensive water damage need a different cleanup plan.
I would want the quote to separate cleanup and drying from new drywall. A patch price cannot tell you the cost of wet insulation, damaged framing or contaminated materials behind the wall.
If rain started the problem, see our roof leak repair guide. For water entering below ground, the basement leak guide covers the source of the leak.
Ceilings, Texture and Paint
Ceiling work means overhead handling and access. ELF identifies ceilings, especially vaulted ones, as a cost driver. A wall-sheet quote should not be treated as a ceiling-sheet quote.
Texture can matter as much as the sheet count. A smooth wall, orange peel and knockdown need different finishing work. Describe the surrounding finish and ask whether the repair blends into it or the whole surface gets refinished.

Level 5 finishing adds a skim coat over the full surface. ELF offers it for smooth work and strong side lighting. It is a separate finishing choice, rather than a reason every damaged wall needs replacement.
Also agree where painting stops. Touching up the patch and repainting from corner to corner are different jobs, particularly when the original paint has aged.
What Owners Paid or Were Quoted
These older Houzz posts show why the scope matters. They are owner accounts, not verified invoices or current prices, and none is a modern whole-house replacement estimate.
- weedyacres, May 5, 2020: an $800 quote to tape, mud and paint an already-hung wall, 11 feet high by 28 feet wide, in a small Midwestern town. The owner would supply paint.
- heatheron40, replying in that 2020 thread: recalled paying $500 about ten years earlier for a 12-by-15-foot room in rural Virginia, with 9.5-foot ceilings. The owner painted; the reply does not itemize materials.
- sandi_f, January 8, 2008, New York time: a $3,200 Delaware basement quote with the owner supplying drywall, mud, tape and other materials. The post does not give the area or a final bill.
Questions Before You Book Drywall Work
Can I Supply the Sheets Myself?
You can ask, but agree on thickness, quantity, delivery and who carries them inside first. Saving on the purchase does not help if the installer arrives to the wrong board or too little material.
Will Replacing Drywall Fix a Crack for Good?
Not if movement continues behind it. ELF discusses seasonal movement in DFW homes. A recurring crack needs its cause checked before you pay for the same cosmetic repair again.
What Should the Written Quote Include?
Look for the repair area, removal and disposal, board type, finishing, texture, painting and cleanup. For damaged walls, have the contractor explain how hidden repairs will be approved if opening the wall reveals more work.
