You pull the handle and nothing happens, or the door drops a little when you open it. Before you agree to a new door, find out which part has failed. A handle, a lock motor and a bent door are very different bills.
So how much does car door repair cost? AutoNation Mobile Service gives $70 to $300 for an inside handle, $100 to $500 for an outside handle and $270 to $550 for a door lock actuator.
A whole replacement door is a bigger job. A Ford Escape front door shell alone is $361.06 at FordPartsGiant, before transferring the hardware, fitting it and painting it.
I’ll walk you through the handles, latch, hinges and door check, then the bodywork. I also found owners’ bills that show why you should ask what is included before comparing prices.
Which Door Repair Do You Need?
If the door closes properly and only the handle or power lock has stopped working, start with a mechanic. A collision shop is the place for a bent door, damaged mounting points or paint work after a crash.

A door that will not stay latched needs attention before you drive. NHTSA’s Ford latch recall explains the danger: a door can appear shut and then open while the car is moving. Arrange a tow if it will not latch securely.
Inside and Outside Door Handles
A loose handle does not automatically mean the handle itself is broken. A cable or rod connects it to the latch. Have the shop check that connection before ordering the visible part.
For an outside handle, the work may involve taking off the inner door trim and moving the water shield to reach the fasteners.
For an inside handle, check whether the quote includes the handle alone or a larger trim assembly. If a rear door opens from outside but not inside, check its child safety lock before booking a repair.
If the door works but you are locked out, my locksmith cost guide separates the mobile visit from opening work. That is a different quote from replacing a failed power-lock motor.
Door Lock Actuator or Latch?
The actuator is the small motor that operates the power lock. The latch holds the door shut against the striker on the body. On some cars they come together as one assembly, so two names on a quote may describe one part.
AutoNation’s actuator breakdown is $120 to $300 for the part and $150 to $250 for labor. AutoNation says the job takes one to two hours.
If one door ignores the lock button or buzzes when you press it, the actuator is worth testing. The mechanic should check its power supply and wiring too, since a new motor will not fix a broken wire.
A latch fault can also leave the “door ajar” warning on after the door is closed. A 2013 Ford Edge owner on CarComplaints was quoted $450 to replace the faulty part, in a complaint dated August 1, 2016.
Before paying for a latch, enter your VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup. Ford recall 20V331 covers certain Fiesta, Focus, Fusion, Escape and other Ford and Lincoln vehicles whose earlier latch repair may have been done incorrectly.
That recall does not cover every Ford with a door warning, and the Edge is not on its model list. A dealer can confirm whether your car has an open repair that is free.
A Sagging Hinge or a Noisy Door Check
The hinges carry the door’s weight. The door check is the short arm between the door and the body that limits its swing and helps hold it open. A popping check arm can sound like a bad hinge.
A Toyota Camry front upper left hinge, part 68720-02020, is $47.59 at ToyotaPartsDeal. Its fitment list includes 2007 to 2024 Camrys. That buys one hinge; fitting, alignment and any paint are extra.
If the door sags, ask the shop to show you whether the wear is in the hinge, its pin or the mounting metal. Repairing a worn pivot is a different job from straightening a door that was forced backward.
Toyota’s bulletin T-SB-0161-16 covers popping front door checks on certain 2007 to 2017 Tundras and 2008 to 2016 Sequoias. It calls for checking the plastic around the pivot for cracks.
When the plastic is intact, Toyota has the technician check the mounting fasteners before replacing the arm. A noise alone is not a reason to buy hinges and a new door.
The bulletin’s passenger-side check arm for Double Cab and CrewMax Tundras and Sequoias, 68610-0C022, is $99.11 at ToyotaPartsDeal before fitting. The listing names 68610-0C023 as its replacement.
Have the parts counter confirm the current number for your VIN. Toyota’s bulletin excludes accident damage, and regular-cab Tundras use a different kit with both check arms replaced together.
For certain 2020 to 2023 Ford Escapes, program 23B56 covers failed door-check welds. The dealer fits a reinforcement kit or replaces the door, depending on the damage. Eligible repairs are free through May 31, 2027, with no mileage limit.
This is a customer satisfaction program, so ask a Ford dealer about 23B56 even if the recall lookup shows nothing.
If It Is Only a Dent or Scratch
A small door ding with intact paint may be a paintless repair. My paintless dent repair cost guide has shop prices by dent size, including creases and dents on body lines.
If the paint is damaged, see the car scratch repair guide for polishing, touch ups and a panel repaint. Neither a dent nor a scratch automatically calls for a whole new door.
What a Whole New Door Includes
A new door shell is the metal structure. It may arrive without the glass, window mechanism, handle, latch or interior trim. The shop has to transfer usable parts, fit the door and finish the paint.

FordPartsGiant has the driver’s front shell for a 2020 to 2025 Escape, part LJ6Z-7820125-C, for $361.06. A used assembly may include glass and hardware, so check what comes with it before comparing the two.
Ford’s 23B56 instructions allow up to 3.5 hours to transfer the parts, fit and align one door, plus up to 4.7 hours for paint. The combined allowance is up to 8.2 hours, with extra time for three-coat paint.
Using that full Ford allowance at Tekmetric’s $132 US repair-shop hourly average gives 8.2 × $132 = $1,082.40 in labor. Body shops may charge separate rates for bodywork and paint.
FordPartsGiant’s shell plus that labor example is $361.06 + $1,082.40 = $1,443.46. This is a subtotal before clips, paint materials, shipping and tax, using warranty hours rather than a retail repair quote.
The trim pins in Ford’s parts list, W721069-S300, are $0.47 each at FordPartsGiant, sold in packs of four. Ford’s parts list allows twelve per vehicle: 12 × $0.47 = $5.64. A single-door job needs its own parts count.
A used door in the right color is worth pricing on an older car. Match the year, body style, side and equipment as well as the paint code.
Damage to the sill or pillar beside the door makes this a larger collision repair, even if the door is the part you notice first.

Ask for the door, hardware transfer, paint and any work on neighboring panels on separate lines. If the shop recommends replacement, ask what prevents repair: the outer skin, inner structure or mounting points.
What Owners Paid and Were Quoted
These older US owners’ reports show how much the bill changes with the work. Each is linked to its CarComplaints entry and the date displayed there:
- A 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee owner in Rockport, Texas, bought four replacement handles for $100, with pins and a removal tool extra. A family member fitted them. The complaint is dated January 1, 2013.
- A 2013 Chevrolet Malibu owner in Streamwood was quoted $312 including parts and labor after the front door caught the rear door and bent the trim. In the complaint dated April 11, 2016, the owner said the problem had not been fixed.
- A 2013 Ford Edge owner in Largo paid a $100 extended-warranty deductible for the door warning problem. The complaint dated March 22, 2017 gives $598.67 as the bill without that coverage.
- A 2004 Toyota Sienna owner in Greensboro, North Carolina, was told a broken door-check weld needed a whole door costing over $1,500. The complaint is dated November 2, 2010; it does not include a final invoice.
The Jeep owner could replace the handles without buying new trim panels.
Questions About Fixing a Car Door
Can I replace a car door handle myself?
A simple handle can be a home repair if you are comfortable removing trim and reconnecting its cable. Use the procedure for your model; hidden clips, wiring and the water shield are easy to damage.
What should I tell the shop when booking?
Tell the shop whether the door opens from inside, outside or neither side, and whether it stays latched.
Do all four door lock actuators need replacing together?
No. A fault at one door does not by itself justify four new actuators. If several locks stopped working together, the shop should look for a shared electrical problem.
Is a new door skin the same as a new door?
No. The skin is the outer sheet of metal. A shell includes the inner structure, while a complete used assembly may also include glass and hardware.
What should I test when I collect the car?
Open the repaired door from both sides, try the lock and window, and check that the door sits flush. The shop should also confirm that the water shield and seals are back in place.
