You came back to your car and found a scratch on the door, or someone dragged a key down the side. Before you call a body shop, run a fingernail across it, because how deep it goes decides the price more than anything else.

So how much does it cost to fix a scratch on a car? The Dent Dude, a mobile dent and paint repair business near Washington, D.C., charges $75 to $400 for most scratches, done at your driveway.

A body shop usually repaints the whole panel instead. WRC Collision in North Hollywood charges $150 to $300 to polish out a clear coat scratch, $300 to $600 per panel for one into the color and $500 to $800 when it reaches primer or metal.

In this guide I will show you how to tell how deep your scratch is, what a mobile repair and a body shop charge for each depth, and what owners paid. I will also show you when a claim on your insurance makes sense.

How Deep Is Your Scratch?

Car paint has four layers: the clear coat on top, then the color, then the primer, then the metal or plastic. Drag a fingernail across the scratch. If it glides over without catching, the scratch is only in the clear coat.

Four paint cross sections with a notch cut deeper each time: clear coat only, nail glides over, $75 to $200 mobile and $150 to $400 at a body shop; into the color, nail catches, $150 to $300 mobile and $300 to $600 at a body shop; down to the primer, gray inside, $250 to $400 mobile and $500 to $900 at a body shop; down to bare metal, silver or rust inside, $300 to $500 mobile and $700 to $1,500 at a body shop

A clear coat scratch looks white, often disappears when wet and can usually be polished away. If your nail catches and you see the color change inside it, the scratch is into the color coat.

A gray or light streak inside means it reached the primer, and a silver or rust colored streak means bare metal. That is where rust starts, so do not leave it long.

What a Mobile Repair and a Body Shop Charge

Here are the Dent Dude’s prices from May 2026, with a mobile repair in the price column and a body shop in the same area beside it:

Light clear coat scratch, under 6 inches$150–$300 at a body shop$75–$125
Long clear coat scratch, over 6 inches$200–$400 at a body shop$125–$200
Scratch into the color, one panel$300–$600 at a body shop$150–$300
Down to the primer, one panel$500–$900 at a body shop$250–$400
Down to bare metal, one panel$700–$1,500 at a body shop$300–$500
Bumper scuff with scratched paint$400–$800 at a body shop$200–$350

Key scratches across several panels run $1,200 to $3,000 at a body shop there, and the mobile repair quotes those car by car.

The gap comes from how a body shop works. It sands, primes and repaints the whole panel and blends it into the next one, and most shops there charge a panel minimum of about $400 to $600 before any paint is mixed.

A mobile repair rebuilds only the damaged spot. A clear coat polish takes 30 to 45 minutes, a color touch up 60 to 90 minutes and a scratch to the primer or metal 2 to 3 hours, because each layer has to dry.

WRC Collision’s body shop prices from July 2026 land in the same range:

Clear coat scratches and swirlspolished, usually same day$150–$300
Scratch into the colorper panel$300–$600
Down to primer or metalper panel$500–$800
Plastic bumper scratchescheaper than metal panels$150–$450
Key scratches on several panelsdepends on the number of panels$1,000–$3,000+

A two inch scratch down to the metal does not get a two inch repair at a body shop. The paint has to be feathered and blended across the panel so the edge cannot be seen, which is why deep scratches are priced per panel.

Fixing a Light Scratch Yourself

A shallow clear coat scratch with no color inside it is a fair job to do at home. Wash and dry the spot, work in a scratch remover compound with a microfiber pad and finish with wax, the Dent Dude advises.

Polish cannot bring color back, so a scratch into the color needs paint. A small bottle of Toyota’s own touch up paint in Super White, part 00258-00040-21, is $9.44 at a dealer parts website.

It was out of stock when I checked on October 14, 2026, so ask your dealer’s parts counter with your paint code.

Go easy with pens and kits on deeper scratches. They can leave a mismatched color in the groove and dull the clear coat around it, WRC Collision warns.

If the whole car is covered in fine swirls rather than one scratch, that is a paint correction job.

What Owners Paid

Here is what owners paid or were quoted on car forums, with a link to each post:

  • A deep scratch across a Toyota Tacoma’s tailgate was fixed by repainting the whole tailgate in the factory color, with clear coat, for $300 cash at a local body shop, on Tacoma World in January 2022.
  • A small cut in a Tesla Model S bumper was repaired and repainted for $600 at an independent shop, after Tesla’s approved shop estimated over $3,300 for it and two stone marks, on Tesla Motors Club in April 2015.
  • Another Model S owner had the trunk repainted in pearl white for $750, on Tesla Motors Club in March 2015.
  • An owner said a hood with a similar scratch was repainted and clear coated for $1,200 about five years earlier, on Tesla Motors Club in June 2022.
  • A collision shop recommended by Tesla quoted over $5,000 to repaint a door with a deep scratch plus the panels around it, on Tesla Motors Club in June 2022.

So owners paid $300 to $1,200 to have one panel repainted. The $5,000 quote included the panels next to the door, and another owner in that thread thought only the door needed paint.

Should You Claim a Keyed Car on Your Insurance?

Comprehensive coverage pays for scratches from vandalism, falling objects or animals. Collision covers damage from another car or a documented hit and run. Neither pays for normal wear or parking lot scuffs.

The deductible decides it. A $300 repair with a $500 deductible is paid out of pocket anyway, and a claim can raise your premium at renewal, so a single scratch under $1,000 is almost always a cash job, the Dent Dude says.

Keying across several panels is different, since it often runs past $1,500. Photograph the damage and file a police report first, because many insurers ask for one for vandalism, WRC Collision points out.

Answers to Questions People Ask About Scratches

How much does it cost to fix a scratch on a car?

A mobile repair near Washington, D.C. charges $75 to $400 for most scratches. A body shop in North Hollywood charges $150 to $300 for a clear coat scratch and $300 to $800 per panel for deeper ones.

How do I know how deep a scratch is?

Run a fingernail across it. If it glides over, the scratch is in the clear coat. If it catches and you see color inside, it is into the paint, and a gray or silver streak means primer or bare metal.

Can a scratch be buffed out?

A clear coat scratch usually can, by polishing or wet sanding. A scratch into the color needs new paint, because polish cannot bring the color back.

How much does it cost to fix a keyed car?

Key scratches across several panels cost $1,000 to $3,000 or more at the two shops above. Comprehensive insurance covers vandalism, so check your deductible and file a police report first.

Is it worth fixing a scratch on a car?

For a scratch down to bare metal, yes, because that is where rust starts. A $150 to $300 repair also protects the car’s resale value and stops the scratch from spreading.
