You come back to your car in a parking lot and there it is: a fresh ding in the door. No scratch, no chipped paint, just a dent that catches the light every time you walk past.

So how much does it cost to fix it without painting? At the four dent shops I checked, one small dent or door ding costs $75 to $375 with paintless dent repair.

In this guide I will show you the price of each dent size, what makes a repair cost more, how it compares with a body shop, and what owners on car forums actually paid.

What Is Paintless Dent Repair?

Paintless dent repair, or PDR, pushes the metal back into shape from behind the panel, with long steel rods and a lot of patience. Your factory paint stays on, and there is no filler and no repainting.

Because there is no paint work, most small dents are done in under an hour. It works as long as the paint is not cracked and the metal is not stretched too far.

The dent tech works from inside the door and pushes the dent out bit by bit, so the paint is never touched.

What It Costs by Dent Size

Most dent shops price by the size of the dent. Precision Dent Removal in Ocala, Florida publishes a full price chart, using everyday things for the size:

Dime to nickel sizeone dent$75 – $100
Quarter sizeone dent$75 – $125
Golf ball sizeone dent$100 – $150
Baseball sizeone dent$125 – $175
Softball sizeone dent$150 – $250
Football sizeone dent$250 – $300

Each extra small ding on the same panel adds $40 at Precision Dent Removal.

What Other Dent Shops Charge

Three more shops in Texas and California publish their prices, and they land in the same area:

The DiNG Company, Austin TXminor door dings and small dents$75 – $375
American Dent Specialists, Houston TX$125 for the first inch, $50 for each inch morefrom $125
Dent Evo, Upland CAone door ding, $195 minimum$195 – $295

So for one ordinary door ding, $75 to $375 covers the four shops. Dent Evo in California has the highest starting price, $195, and a $75 dent is a small, easy one.

What Makes a Dent Cost More

Creases

A crease is a dent with a sharp line in it, like the mark a car door edge leaves. It is harder to work out than a round dent, so it costs more.

Crease up to 3 inchesPrecision Dent Removal, Ocala FL$75 – $150
Crease of 3 to 6 inchesPrecision Dent Removal, Ocala FL$150 – $300
Crease of 6 to 12 inchesPrecision Dent Removal, Ocala FL$225 – $500
Moderate dents and creasesThe DiNG Company, Austin TX$275 – $825

Aluminum, Body Lines and the Roof

Precision Dent Removal adds 25% for each of these: a body line, double metal, glue pull, laminated glass, aluminum, high strength steel, sound deadener and the roof. They charge at most two of those on one panel.

Aluminum matters more than most people think. Many newer cars and trucks, Teslas and the Ford F-150 among them, have aluminum panels. A dent tech told one Tesla owner that aluminum is a lot stiffer to push back than steel.

More Than One Dent

Extra dings on the same panel are cheap to add. They cost $40 each at Precision Dent Removal, and American Dent Specialists charges $50 for each extra small ding in the same panel.

Paintless Dent Repair or a Body Shop?

A body shop fills, sands and repaints the panel, so it costs more and takes days. Dent Evo in California compares the two on its price page: $195 to $295 for a door ding with PDR, against $400 to $700 at a body shop.

Owners see the same gap. An F-150 owner was told a body shop would charge about $1,200 for one door ding. A Tesla owner got a body shop estimate of $2,000 to $3,000 for a crease that a dent shop later fixed for $500.

A body shop is still the answer when the paint is cracked or chipped, or when the metal is torn. PDR cannot fix paint.

What Owners Paid, From Car Forums

Shop prices are one thing, but I always like to see what real owners paid. Here is what people posted on the F150gen14 and Tesla Motors Club forums:

  • An F-150 owner had a door ding a little smaller than a dime fixed for $150, the dent tech’s minimum for an aluminum panel. It took about 20 minutes, at their own house, in August 2023.
  • In the same thread, another F-150 owner was looking at a body shop quote of about $1,200 for a door ding from a tree branch, because no dent tech would call back.
  • A Tesla owner with a sharp crease in the driver door got a body shop estimate of about $2,000 to $3,000 in July 2023. In March 2024 a dent shop with Tesla experience quoted $500, and another dent tech had quoted $250.
  • A Tesla owner had a small dent fixed for $149 in March 2021 and wrote that it looked perfect.
  • A Tesla owner in San Diego paid $325 for a door ding on an aluminum door, right on a body line, in December 2018.

Notice the Tesla crease story. The owner picked the $500 shop over the $250 one because that shop knew Teslas. With aluminum panels, an experienced dent tech is worth paying for.

Even then, PDR has limits. The same owner later wrote that the shop could not fix every part of the crease, but it went from visible every day to hard to spot.
