Short answer

US glass-service menus compared by pane type, with sealed-unit versus complete-window scope and three dated homeowner accounts.

You find broken glass after a stray ball hits the window, or notice a cloudy patch between its panes. If the frame is sound and the window still opens properly, price the glass before ordering a whole new window.

So window glass replacement ranges from $120 to $675 in the standard single- and double-pane examples at San Diego Window Repairs, Action Glass and Carolina Glass Replacement. Specialty glass and access can add to the job.

I will compare those local prices, explain what a sealed glass unit includes and show what homeowners paid or were quoted for several windows at once.

Carolina Glass Replacement also states a $365 minimum for a single visit in its core service area. Its prices exclude sales tax, including the table ranges above.

Carolina Glass Replacement has a separate $365 to $825 range for foggy or failed-seal units with Low-E coating and argon. Do not treat its basic broken-glass range as a ceiling for that work.

A small clear pane and a large coated insulated unit are different orders, even if both fit a window described as double-hung.

What Gets Replaced in a Double-Pane Window?

An insulated glass unit, or IGU, is the sealed glass assembly fitted into the window. Carolina’s service replaces it with a factory-sealed unit while retaining suitable surrounding parts.

That is different from buying a complete replacement window. A rotten frame, distorted opening or failed hardware needs attention beyond the glass; changing the unit cannot repair those parts.

Glass-only replacement retains a suitable frame and replaces the glass unit. Whole-window replacement changes the frame and sash; agree with the installer on work to surrounding finishes. Rot or hardware damage needs separate assessment.

I would ask the glazier to identify the damaged unit and check the sash before ordering. The window’s overall width does not necessarily give the dimensions or thickness of the glass being replaced.

If the frame also needs replacing, my vinyl window replacement guide covers complete-window fitting. For projecting windows and their supports, use the bay window guide.

Glass Type, Access and the Finished Job

Action Glass in Houston separates its glass supply costs from installed examples. Its tempered-glass installed range is $300 to $600, while a standard double-pane replacement is $250 to $500.

Tempered glass, coatings, tint and decorative grids need to be specified before ordering. Have the installer confirm the required glass for the opening, particularly near doors or in other safety-glass locations.

The Houston company identifies an additional $50 to $150 for second-story ladder or scaffolding setup. Check access early, including whether the crew can reach the unit from inside.

At San Diego Window Repairs, tempered, Low-E, tinted or hard-to-access work falls in a broader $220 to $650 category. It is separate from its standard-glass menu.

Confirm removal, fitting, sealing and disposal in the proposal. For several units, number the affected windows by room and ask which ones the total covers.

What US Homeowners Paid or Were Quoted

A Garage Journal discussion includes these accounts from US homeowners. The number and size of the units differ, so these totals are not interchangeable per-window prices.

The Texas owner wanted the internal dividers removed and had some fogging. Those quotes cover the whole order, so they do not tell you what one ordinary window would cost.

Keeping a Glass Quote Comparable

Ask whether the price covers glass alone, fitting glass into a sash you bring to the shop, or installation at your home. Taking a removable sash in can change the work the business is quoting.

Check the original window warranty before ordering. Also read the new glass and workmanship warranty, including who handles a future failed seal and whether a return visit carries a charge.

Keep children and pets away from broken glass and the damaged opening. Arrange safe temporary protection with the repairer, and confirm the lead time for a made-to-size unit.

Questions About Replacing Window Glass

How much is double-pane window glass replacement?

The standard service examples are $180-$400 at San Diego Window Repairs, $250-$500 at Action Glass Houston and $365-$675 for broken annealed units at Carolina Glass Replacement. Special glass and failed-seal Low-E work have separate ranges.

Can only the glass be replaced?

Yes, when the surrounding window is suitable. The glazier needs to check the frame, sash, hardware and required unit before deciding that a glass-only repair will solve the problem.

Does the price include a new frame?

The glass-service examples here retain suitable existing framing. A complete-window replacement includes different components and fitting work, which should be described separately.

Does a second-floor window cost more?

Access can add to the job. Action Glass identifies $50-$150 for second-story ladder or scaffolding setup. Ask how your particular opening will be reached.

Where These Prices Come From

I hope this helps you keep a broken pane from turning into a larger purchase than you need. You can send a recent US glass quote with the unit sizes to costcheckr@gmail.com.
