Your radiator is leaking, and you want to know whether the shop can fix it or needs to replace it. A repairable seam and a brittle, cracked tank can lead to very different bills.
So radiator leak repair is $150 to $400 at Gary’s Quality Automotive in Grand Island, Nebraska. Its full radiator replacement range is $300 to $900 for most passenger vehicles.
I will compare repair and replacement, explain the diagnostic charge, and show three US owner examples. This guide covers car radiators; a cap replacement or coolant flush is a separate service.
What Does Radiator Repair Cost?
Gary’s Quality Automotive separates leak repair from replacement. The damage and the vehicle decide which job is possible.
Three Brothers Auto Repair also advertises $100 to $300 for a minor leak repair or sealant service. Ask what method that offer covers, rather than assuming it means rebuilding the radiator.
For labor alone when you supply the radiator, Three Brothers publishes $200 to $400. That leaves you responsible for buying the part and checking what else the shop needs.

Can Your Radiator Actually Be Repaired?
Marlow Automotive’s repair explanation distinguishes localized tube or seam damage from widespread corrosion and multiple leaks.
An otherwise sound radiator with a small damaged area may be repairable. Old copper-and-brass designs can sometimes be soldered; some metal tanks can be welded or brazed.
Cracked or brittle plastic tanks are a different problem. Marlow favors replacement over patching those tanks, especially when the core is also worn or the repair approaches replacement cost.
Recoring means keeping suitable tanks and replacing the core between them. A radiator specialist may consider that for a classic or heavy-duty vehicle, but it is not the same job as applying a patch.

Ask the specialist which material has failed and how the proposed repair will hold pressure. I would want the repair warranty and the replacement alternative before paying to patch an aging assembly.
Diagnosis Can Keep the Bill Smaller
Three Brothers advertises $120 to $180 for a cooling-system diagnostic, including a pressure test and checks of hoses, cap, thermostat and water pump. It credits that charge toward repair if you proceed there.
Confirm how the credit appears on your estimate. Do not automatically add the full diagnostic amount again when the shop has already applied it.
The leak may be at a hose connection or the radiator cap, rather than the radiator core. Have the shop point out the wet area and explain what failed the test.
A coolant flush or radiator cleaning changes fluid or addresses deposits. It does not replace a cracked tank, so a flush price cannot be used as the cost to repair a physical leak.
What Owners Reported for Radiator Work
These older IH8MUD reports include two warranty jobs and one radiator bought for a DIY replacement.
- A Chicago owner described about $750 for a dealer radiator job with hoses, clamps and coolant, posted August 25, 2020. A Toyota service agreement covered everything except the hoses and clamps.
- An Arizona owner reported the dealer charged an aftermarket warranty $1,100 for radiator and water-pump work together, posted August 21, 2020. It was not a radiator-only cash payment.
- Another Chicago owner doing the installation personally paid about $460 including tax for the radiator from a dealer, posted August 19, 2021. Shop installation was not included.
I would compare your quote with the work included, not just the biggest number. The warranty examples describe the bill for the work, rather than what the owner personally paid.
What Makes Replacement Cost More?
Three Brothers identifies difficult access, corroded hardware and specialty coolant as cost factors. Ask which surrounding parts need removal and whether the quoted coolant refill is included.
Hoses and clamps may deserve attention while the radiator is out, but the estimate should identify each one. A water pump is another component, as the Arizona owner’s combined bill shows.
If the problem is elsewhere in the cooling system, my coolant leak repair guide compares those other jobs.
Should You Drive With the Leak?
If the temperature gauge climbs into the red, Gary’s advises pulling over and turning the engine off immediately. Arrange a tow instead of trying to finish the trip while it overheats.
Never remove the radiator or reservoir pressure cap while the engine is hot. Escaping hot coolant can scald you.
I would not choose an off-the-shelf stop-leak product before the damage is assessed. A shop’s selected repair method and pouring sealant into a system of unknown condition are different decisions.
Questions About Radiator Repair Prices
Is repairing a radiator cheaper than replacing it?
Gary’s publishes $150 to $400 for leak repair and $300 to $900 for replacement. Whether repair is worth doing depends on the damaged material, the remaining condition and the warranty offered.
How much is radiator replacement labor if I buy the part?
Three Brothers advertises $200 to $400 labor when the customer supplies the radiator. Ask about coolant, required hardware and who covers repeat labor if the supplied part fails.
Is a radiator tank repair the same as recoring?
No. A tank repair addresses the end tank or its joint; recoring replaces the central core while retaining suitable tanks. A specialist needs to inspect the assembly before pricing either option.
Will a coolant flush stop a radiator leak?
It will not replace a cracked tank or damaged tube. First locate the leak, then decide on the repair; fluid service is a separate part of maintaining the cooling system.
