You turn the key, the engine cranks, and the car will not start. If the diagnosis is a fuel pump, the next question is which pump the shop means.
So an in-tank fuel pump or module replacement is $450 to $950 for many vehicles at Luxury Auto Works in Austin, including parts and labor. Its gasoline direct-injection high-pressure pump range is $900 to $2,200.
I will explain those two jobs, show what access adds to the bill, and share three US owner reports. There is also a recall check that could save some Honda and Acura owners the repair cost.
Fuel Pump Replacement Prices by Type
Luxury Auto Works publishes these Austin-area ranges. They describe different systems, so the lowest and highest figures are not prices for one standard pump job.
Ask whether the price covers a bare pump, a complete module or more than one pump. These gasoline examples should not be used to price a diesel fuel-system failure with contaminated injectors and lines.
Why the Pump’s Location Matters
The in-tank pump sends fuel out of the tank. In a gasoline direct-injection engine, a separate engine-mounted high-pressure pump raises the pressure for the injection system.

The Austin shop identifies access as a price factor: reaching a pump through a service opening and lowering the tank are different amounts of work. Some vehicles also have a transfer pump.
A complete module can include more than the pump motor. The Austin shop describes a module containing the pump, strainer, fuel-level sender, internal regulator and sometimes a pressure sensor.

If the shop proposes a fuel filter at the same time, find out whether it is separately serviceable or part of the module. That avoids comparing a filter service with a complete pump replacement.
What Owners Paid for Fuel Pump Work
The first two reports below come from NHTSA’s public owner complaints. They describe different repair scopes, including a high-pressure pump rather than only the in-tank recall part.
- A 2018 Honda Odyssey owner reported paying $1,273 at a Honda dealer for a high-pressure fuel pump, filed June 30, 2025.
- Another 2018 Odyssey owner reported a $874.42 repair plus an additional $77 diagnosis, filed March 20, 2026. The account identifies fuel-pump work but does not name the pump type.
- A Missouri IH8MUD member paid $125 labor to install a supplied pump and filter, posted June 13, 2015. A next-day clarification confirms the owner brought the parts.
The second Odyssey total is $874.42 + $77 = $951.42. The Missouri labor bill is an older example of customer-supplied parts, so it cannot stand in for a current complete repair price.
Could a Recall Cover the Replacement?
Honda’s recall 23V858000 covers certain Honda and Acura vehicles with an in-tank pump that may fail. The stated remedy is a free fuel-pump module replacement at a dealer.
Check your VIN at NHTSA’s recall lookup before approving a paid replacement. A model name alone does not establish that your individual vehicle is included.
The high-pressure pump is a separate component. The owner who paid for that part described a different failure from the low-pressure recall, so do not assume every pump on the car is covered.
What Should Be Tested Before Buying a Pump?
The Austin shop checks fuel delivery and electrical causes before condemning the pump. A blown fuse, faulty relay, wiring problem or misleading pressure reading can send the diagnosis in another direction.
I would ask for the failed pressure or electrical test result and the exact component it identifies. Hearing no pump noise by itself does not settle the diagnosis.
A fuel pressure sensor problem deserves its own test. Replacing the sensor and pump together should follow a finding that both need attention.
If the engine stalls in traffic or you smell leaking gasoline, stop using the vehicle and arrange safe recovery. A fuel leak needs its source located before the car is driven again.
How to Read the Final Estimate
Look for the part number and brand, access labor, required seals or lines, diagnosis and tax. Ask whether diagnosis is included in the repair or remains a separate charge, as it did in the Odyssey owner’s account.
For an older car, I would compare a shop-supplied part and warranty with the complete cost of bringing your own. Agree on who pays the labor if that supplied part fails.
Fuel work involves stored pressure and flammable gasoline. Tank access and correct sealing make this a poor first repair for someone learning car maintenance.
Questions About Fuel Pump Replacement
Does the $450 to $950 range include labor?
Yes. Luxury Auto Works describes that range as parts and labor for many in-tank pump or module replacements. Difficult access and other pump systems have separate ranges.
Why is a high-pressure fuel pump more expensive?
It is a different engine-mounted part used in direct-injection systems. The Austin shop gives $900 to $2,200 for these gasoline jobs, depending on the brand and configuration.
Is diagnosis always included in the pump price?
No. One Odyssey owner reported $77 diagnosis on top of an $874.42 repair. Ask your shop how it handles that charge before authorizing work.
Should I replace the pump when changing the fuel filter?
Find out how your vehicle is built. A separately serviceable filter does not automatically require a new pump; an integrated module is a different parts and access job.
