You turn the key in your Ford SUV, hear a slow crank or a click, and start wondering whether a battery swap really needs a trip to the dealer.
So Buss Ford in McHenry, Illinois advertises battery replacement installed from $249.95. That starting offer is not an AGM price for every Ford SUV; the dealer needs your vehicle details to quote the correct battery.
For comparison, Luxury Auto Works gives typical Austin prices of $180 to $250 installed for a standard flooded battery and $280 to $450 for an AGM. Those are its general battery prices, rather than a Ford-only rate.
I will walk you through dealer and shop prices, the batteries listed for five Ford SUVs, and the extra work that can turn a simple swap into a bigger bill.
This guide covers the small 12-volt battery. The large pack that powers a hybrid or electric vehicle is a different job, covered in our hybrid battery cost guide.
Dealer and Shop Prices
Here are published US prices checked October 17, 2026. They give you useful places to start, though they do not establish a national Ford average.
Buss Ford includes inspecting and cleaning the connections. Its starting price does not identify one battery that fits every Explorer or Expedition.
Compare installed prices with installed prices. A catalog battery can still need fitting, a core deposit, tax and the correct reset or configuration procedure.

Which Battery Does Your Ford SUV Take?
The model name alone is not enough. Year, engine and equipment matter.
These are 2023 examples with FordPartsGiant’s listed battery-only prices. Its H6, H7 and T4 product pages marked those batteries unavailable when checked October 17, 2026.
AGM means absorbent glass mat. It is a battery design, while H6, H7 and H8 identify sizes. The Explorer catalog includes several options; they are not all interchangeable.
For a 2023 Bronco with the 2.3L engine, Ford specifies H7 AGM with auxiliary switches, including trucks with a winch. Without those switches and a winch, its manual specifies H6 AGM.
The full Motorcraft numbers are BAGM-48H6-760 for H6 and BAGM-94RH7-800 for H7. Both have a $229.95 list price and an $18 core deposit at FordPartsGiant, on top of its $207.88 selling price.
A core deposit is refundable when you return the old battery under the seller’s return terms. Shipping and tax also sit outside the catalog prices.
Before ordering, have the seller match the battery to your VIN, including its type, capacity, terminals and hold-down.
Why Some Battery Jobs Cost More
A battery you can see is not always one you can lift straight out. Covers, air intake parts and a tight opening can add removal work before the mechanic reaches the clamp.

A 2015 Escape owner in Michigan described exactly this at Batteries Plus: the replacement involved removing other parts to reach the battery. The owner’s bill appears below.
Do not assume a Ford SUV’s 12-volt battery sits under a seat. FordPartsGiant places the 2023 Escape hybrid’s battery at the rear, while the gas-engine battery is at the front.
The 2023 Explorer hybrid also has a separate rear auxiliary battery in the catalog, alongside the front battery. Make sure the quote identifies which one failed, rather than charging for both without a test.
Luxury Auto Works says start-stop or specialty battery jobs may add $50 to $120 for parts, access or programming. It does not give a separate price for a Ford battery reset.
Ask for the battery, fitting, any reset and tax on the same quote. If your current battery still has replacement coverage, bring the purchase receipt before paying for another one.
Does the New Battery Need a Reset?
Ford’s battery monitoring system keeps track of the battery. A replacement can need a reset, but that does not automatically mean an expensive dealer programming visit.
The 2023 Bronco owner’s manual gives a reset you can do without a scan tool:
- Switch the ignition on with the engine off.
- Within 10 seconds, flash the high beams five times, finishing with them off, then press and release the brake pedal three times.
- The battery warning lamp flashes three times to confirm the reset.
Use the procedure in your own year’s manual. The steps above are Ford’s Bronco instructions, not a reset procedure for every SUV it has made.
There is a separate requirement for 2022 to 2025 Escape hybrids. Ford’s SSM 53352 directs the technician to run Battery Type Configuration in its FDRS diagnostic software when replacing the 12-volt battery.
The technician selects the installed battery type and updates the body control module. For one of these Escapes, I would choose a shop that can finish that software step as well as fit the battery.
What Ford Owners Paid
These reports show the spread between an older battery purchase and a larger dealer bill. The dates matter: they are owners’ past costs, not today’s price list.
- A Florida owner of a 2012 Edge SE paid $160 for a new battery, posted June 27, 2017. The post does not split out labor.
- A Michigan owner reported a $180 battery replacement at Batteries Plus for a 2015 Escape, in a complaint dated February 19, 2020. The owner mentioned fitting charges for difficult access without separating the amounts.
- A 2019 Explorer owner told NHTSA they had paid $200 for a failed battery the previous month, in a complaint filed January 7, 2022. No parts-and-labor split was given.
- A 2021 Expedition owner paid over $700 for a new battery and dealer service charges, filed November 25, 2025. The battery continued to drain afterward.
When Another Battery Will Not Solve It
If a new battery keeps going flat, ask for charging-system and parked-current-draw tests. Paying for repeated batteries will not fix a circuit that keeps using power after you switch off.
Ford’s Bronco manual explains that battery protection can switch off items such as heated seats or the audio system. A message about that action alone does not mean the battery needs replacing.
Have the battery and charging system tested before agreeing to replacement. Ask what diagnosis costs and whether that fee is credited if you proceed.
If your Edge also keeps displaying a door-ajar warning, mention it during diagnosis. Our car door repair guide covers the latch and sensor faults owners have reported.
Questions About Ford SUV Batteries
Is there one average Ford SUV battery replacement cost for 2026?
The published menus here do not support a national Ford average. Buss Ford starts at $249.95 installed, without identifying a universal battery type. Luxury Auto Works’ general AGM installation range is $280 to $450.
Is a Ford dealer always more expensive than a repair shop?
You need matched quotes to tell. A dealer’s starting price cannot be compared directly with a shop’s AGM range unless the battery specification, fitting and software work are the same.
Can I buy the battery and fit it myself?
If you are comfortable handling a heavy battery and following the removal procedure, you can save fitting labor. An Escape hybrid covered by SSM 53352 still needs the Ford software step described above.
Does this price include the large hybrid battery pack?
No. These prices cover 12-volt batteries. A hybrid’s high-voltage traction pack is a separate part and a different repair.
