A cracked strip of vinyl can make you wonder whether the rest of the house is next. You may only need a few replacement panels, but a faded color or damage behind the siding can turn that small job into a bigger decision.
So a full vinyl siding replacement on a 2,000 to 2,500-square-foot house is $15,000 to $25,000 in Eby Exteriors’ Pennsylvania examples.
I will help you compare a patch, one wall and a full replacement. Along the way, we will separate the siding itself from removal, trim and the work underneath it.
Can You Replace Just the Damaged Panels?
The Vinyl Siding Institute manual describes replacing an individual damaged panel. The installer releases the panel above it, removes the damaged piece and fits a new one into place.
The wall beneath it matters too. The same manual warns against installing vinyl over rotting wood, so damaged wood needs repair before the new siding goes on.
Square Feet and Squares: Which Area Are You Paying For?
A siding square is 100 square feet of wall coverage. Your home’s floor area is a different measurement. Have the contractor measure the outside walls and gables, then account for windows, doors and material lost to cuts.

Eby’s material comparison gives vinyl at $4 to $8 per square foot installed and fiber cement at $6 to $13. The equivalent prices per square are calculated below.
| Material | Installed per Sq Ft | Calculated per 100 Sq Ft |
|---|---|---|
| Vinyl | $4 to $8, Eby Exteriors | 100 x $4 = $400; 100 x $8 = $800 |
| Fiber cement | $6 to $13, Eby Exteriors | 100 x $6 = $600; 100 x $13 = $1,300 |
For a measured 300-square-foot wall, Eby’s vinyl rate gives 300 x $4 = $1,200 to 300 x $8 = $2,400. That is area math for installation, before confirming removal, trim, minimum charges or hidden repairs.
What Makes a Whole-House Quote Larger?
Eby’s whole-house examples rise to $25,000 to $35,000 for a 2,500 to 3,500-square-foot house, and $40,000 to $50,000+ for a house of 4,000 square feet or more.
Those examples group houses by size; they are not measured wall-area quotations. Extra insulation, elaborate trim and difficult shapes can change the result. The published ranges do not itemize every removal or repair allowance.
In Chicago’s western suburbs, A&D Exteriors gives $10,000 to $15,000 for a 1,500-square-foot ranch or split-level.
That A&D example includes removal, premium vinyl, trim, soffit work and minimal rot repair on a straightforward layout. It is useful because it tells you more about the work behind the total.
For tear-off and disposal by itself, A&D gives $1,500 to $4,000. Do not add that again when the whole-job quote already includes it.
House Wrap, Trim and Hidden Damage
Vinyl is not a watertight wall covering. The Vinyl Siding Institute manual explains the need for a water-resistive barrier and flashing behind it.
Have the estimate describe how damaged wrap and window flashing will be handled. A fresh outer surface will not fix water getting into the wall around an opening.
Trim needs its own description too: corners, window and door surrounds, soffits and fascia may all be separate work. Reusing sound pieces and replacing everything are different proposals.

If removal exposes rotten sheathing, ask for photos and a written price before the extra carpentry starts. Agreeing on a price per sheet or a defined repair allowance makes that decision easier.
Water can also enter where a roof meets a wall. If that is the source, the flashing work belongs in the repair scope; our roof leak repair guide covers that side of the job.
Should You Switch to Fiber Cement?
If you prefer the look of fiber cement, get a separate quote for the same wall area, trim and removal.
Eby’s installed rates do not itemize painting. Ask what finish is included in each quote.
Questions Before You Replace Vinyl Siding
Does faded siding always need replacing?
Color change alone does not establish that the wall has failed. Cracks, loose panels and water entry need their own assessment, especially if you are considering replacement mainly for appearance.
Can new vinyl go over the old siding?
Have the contractor inspect the existing layers and substrate first. Covering an old wall can hide damage and complicate the details around openings; the quote should explain the proposed preparation.
Is a siding square the same as a carton?
No. A square means 100 square feet. Carton coverage depends on the product and profile, so check its stated coverage before ordering.
Should a siding quote include a permit?
Ask the local building department what your project requires, then have the contractor identify who obtains it and whether the fee is included. Requirements can differ for a patch and a full replacement.
