The tread is nearly gone, and the tire shop has given you a choice of brands plus several extra charges. It is hard to tell which part of that bill buys better tires and which part just gets them onto the car.
So what does tire replacement cost? Four 215/55R17 tires in the examples I checked at Boulevard Tire Shop in Philadelphia cost $480 to $960, before fitting and tax. The selected tires are $120 to $240 each.
Installation is another part of the bill. Fast Lane Oil & Tire in Talladega, Alabama, charges $25 per tire to mount and balance, with some sizes at $35, plus $5 for tire disposal.
I will show you the actual tire models behind those prices, how the fitting charges add up, and what owners found when comparing a store purchase with ordering online.
What Four New Tires Cost
Comparing the same size makes the prices more useful. These are selected 215/55R17 listings at Boulevard Tire Shop, checked October 23, 2026.
Those are tire prices, not promises that the shop will fit a set for the amount shown. Confirm installation, tax and any valve or disposal charges before ordering.

Your car may use another size entirely. A price for a sedan tire cannot tell you what a large truck tire, a run-flat or a different load rating will cost.
Give the seller your exact size and vehicle details. If the wheels have been changed, mention that too, so the quote does not assume the car still has its original setup.
Mounting, Balancing and Disposal Add Up
Mounting puts the new tire onto the wheel. Balancing corrects the wheel-and-tire assembly’s weight distribution. Both are different from adjusting the car’s wheel alignment.
Here is the Fast Lane service menu turned into a four-tire fitting example. These are its labor and disposal charges; the tires themselves are extra.
Do not add a separate balancing charge when the fitting package already includes it. The same applies to disposal, valve service and maintenance if they are bundled into the seller’s offer.

Fast Lane prices valve stems and valves with sensors separately. My TPMS sensor cost guide covers replacement sensors.
Can You Replace Just One or Two Tires?
A single damaged tire does not automatically mean buying four. It does mean checking how its replacement will match the tires that remain, including their size, type and wear.
Michelin’s US tire FAQ recommends four matching tires. If you buy only two, its guidance is to fit the new pair on the rear axle for better stability in wet conditions.
With all-wheel drive, have the shop check your vehicle maker’s permitted tire differences before replacing only one. A matching name on the sidewall does not tell you whether the tread depths are close enough.
What Owners Paid and Were Quoted
These US forum examples are older than the current menus above. I have kept the dates and the contents of each price because an online delivery and a fitted set are different purchases.
- A San Antonio owner posted on March 9, 2020, that Atlas Force UHP tires in 255/40/20 cost $489 out the door, including $100 installation.
- In the same discussion on February 28, 2020, a CX-5 owner had a $940.30 installed quote from Discount Tire while comparing Goodyear Assurance MaxLife offers.
- A Buffalo owner confirmed on December 18, 2012, that a set of Yokohama Spec-X tires from Dunn Tire cost $901 out the door, with installation and an online coupon.
The Buffalo owner also checked local fitting costs before choosing a seller. That is the comparison I would make: the amount to get the tires delivered and installed, with the same services included.
Do You Need an Alignment With New Tires?
If the old tires wore unevenly or the car pulls, ask for an alignment check and its results. New tires cannot correct an alignment problem or a worn suspension part that caused the old set to wear badly.
Fast Lane’s separate alignment menu price is $79, or $129 with camber and caster adjustments. Those are extra services, not part of its mount-and-balance price.
If a bent or damaged wheel is the problem, the wheel repair guide covers that separately. Buying another tire will not repair the wheel it mounts onto.
How I Would Compare Two Tire Offers
Ask what the warranty actually pays for. A mileage warranty, a road-hazard plan and free rotations cover different things. Keep the receipt and find out what maintenance records the warranty requires.
If ordering online, book a willing installer before delivery. Confirm it accepts customer-supplied tires, its fitting charge and whether shipping the tires directly to that shop is possible.
Do not stretch unsafe tires to wait for a sale. Michelin’s replacement guidance uses 2/32 inch of remaining tread as the worn-tire replacement point; damage can make replacement necessary sooner.
Questions You Might Have About Tire Prices
How much does it cost to replace four tires?
The four selected 215/55R17 sets at Boulevard Tire Shop range from $480 to $960 before fitting and tax. Size and model matter, so use these as same-size examples rather than a price for every car.
How much does tire installation cost for four tires?
At Fast Lane, four standard mount-and-balance jobs are 4 x $25 = $100. Four disposal fees add 4 x $5 = $20, making $120 before the tires, tax or extra services.
Is balancing the same as an alignment?
No. Balancing corrects weight distribution in the rotating wheel and tire. Alignment adjusts the wheel angles on the car and is a separate service.
Where should two new tires go?
Michelin recommends putting the new pair on the rear axle. Have the shop confirm that replacing only a pair is suitable for your car and the remaining tires.
