You have picked a tile you like, but the installation quote is harder to understand. One price covers laying it, another includes the tile, and neither tells you what happens to the old floor.
So tile installation labor is $5 to $9 per square foot for ceramic and $7 to $12 for standard porcelain at Cavalieri Flooring in Orlando. Its broader comparison gives $8 to $22 for tile with materials and labor.
I will walk you through those prices, a New York installer’s menu, and the work that needs its own allowance. That way, you can compare the same job when the quotes arrive.
Tile Installation Cost Per Square Foot
Cavalieri’s Central Florida menu separates labor by tile type and size. Materials are separate in these rows:
The $8 to $22 installed comparison on Cavalieri’s page is a broad ceramic/porcelain band. It is not an installed price for every stone, large slab or outdoor project on the menu.
For your own floor, start with the measured area and the exact tile. A straightforward rectangular room and a room full of corners can need different amounts of cutting even when their areas match.
What Would a 100-Square-Foot Floor Cost?
Using Cavalieri’s ceramic labor range, 100 × $5 = $500 and 100 × $9 = $900. With its standard porcelain range, 100 × $7 = $700 and 100 × $12 = $1,200.
These are labor calculations from Cavalieri’s published rates. They do not add a tile purchase, demolition, repairs or tax. Have the installer confirm what preparation the chosen rate covers.

A tile order also has to allow for cuts and spare pieces. Use your installer’s order quantity rather than assuming that every square foot you buy will end up in the floor.
Why a Small Bathroom Can Cost More Per Foot
At ONIITO in New York City, standard floor-tile labor up to 12-by-24 inches is $11 to $14 per square foot. Its separate package for a bathroom floor of about 40 square feet is $520 to $680 for labor.
Multiplying ONIITO’s area rate gives 40 × $11 = $440 to 40 × $14 = $560. That is below its named bathroom package, so I would use the bathroom quote when planning that job.
ONIITO also identifies walk-up access, elevator restrictions and co-op paperwork as things that can affect the quote. A room’s floor area does not describe all the work needed to get it finished.
ONIITO’s larger-format or mosaic labor is $18 to $24 per square foot. Its large-format threshold is 24-by-48 inches, different from Cavalieri’s, so check the dimensions before comparing the two.
What Goes Under the Tile?
Before you agree on a price, ask the installer to separate the following work on the estimate:
- Removing the old covering and hauling away debris.
- Flattening the surface and repairing any damaged support.
- Backer board or a membrane, with the setting materials.
- Waterproofing where the installation needs it.
- Grout, edge trim, transitions and refitting anything removed.
ONIITO has a separate waterproofing-membrane labor line of $4 to $5.60 per square foot for wet areas. Materials and fixtures are billed at cost unless its estimate states otherwise.

Tile cannot put strength back into damaged wood underneath it. If the floor is soft or rotten, my subfloor repair guide explains the panels and supports that may need work first.
What Homeowners Paid for Backsplash Installation
Small wall projects help explain why area alone can be misleading. These DC Urban Moms accounts concern backsplashes, with tile purchases separate; they are not quotes for an open floor:
- On December 12, 2023, at 11:48, a homeowner reported about $1,100 for handyman labor. The tile had already been bought at Lowe’s.
- On December 12, 2023, at 12:56, another poster received a $2,000 quote to remove mosaic and fit rectangular tile over an area described as about 11 by 6 feet.
- On October 15, 2025, at 12:49, a homeowner in the same discussion recalled paying $1,500 for a small kitchen backsplash several years earlier.
A kitchen described as 10 by 10 feet does not have 100 square feet of backsplash. Measure the actual tiled surface, excluding openings, instead of using the room’s floor dimensions.
Where I Would Spend the Money
If you want a simpler quote, choose the tile before asking for bids. Give each installer the same size, pattern and room measurements, with photographs of the existing floor and access.
I would keep the preparation and simplify the design if the total is too high. Cavalieri’s own menu shows the extra labor attached to large-format tile compared with standard ceramic or porcelain.
If you are keeping wood in the adjoining room, our hardwood refinishing guide covers refreshing that surface. Agree on the doorway transition before either floor is finished.
Questions About Tile Installation Prices
Does a per-square-foot installation price include tile?
It depends on the description. Cavalieri’s tile-type installation menu is labor only, while its separate ceramic/porcelain comparison includes materials and labor.
Is porcelain installation more expensive than ceramic?
In Cavalieri’s Orlando labor menu, standard porcelain is $7-$12 per square foot and ceramic is $5-$9. Size, layout and preparation also affect the job.
Can I multiply a floor rate by a small bathroom’s area?
Ask for the bathroom total. ONIITO publishes both an area rate and a separate small-bathroom package, and the two do not give the same total by simple multiplication.
Does installing tile include fixing the subfloor?
Do not assume it does. Have the installer identify damaged panels, flattening, underlayment and waterproofing as part of the agreed scope before setting the tile.
Where These Prices Come From
US installer menus checked October 28, 2026. Homeowner accounts keep their original dates.
- Cavalieri Flooring, Orlando: tile installation labor and installed-floor comparison.
- ONIITO, New York City: tile labor, waterproofing and bathroom packages.
- DC Urban Moms: backsplash installation accounts, December 2023 and October 2025.
