Your sunroof leaks when it rains, will not close, or the glass shattered on the highway. What it costs depends on what broke, from a drain cleaning to a whole new assembly, so here is what each sunroof repair costs.
So how much does it cost to repair a sunroof? Owners told NHTSA, the US road safety agency, they paid $145 to $500 or more to clear clogged drains, $480 to $2,410 for new glass, and $2,100 to $8,260 for a new shade, track or whole assembly.
On the Kia Telluride, Kia’s own fix for broken wind deflector arms comes to $185.59 with its parts and job time, while owners were quoted $3,500 to more than $7,000 for a whole new assembly.
In this guide I will show you what each repair costs, the cheaper fixes in Kia’s and GM’s own bulletins, and the recalls that repair some sunroofs free.
Clogged Drains and Leaks
Most sunroofs have drain tubes that carry rainwater away. When they clog, water runs into the headliner, the carpet or the electronics. Here is what owners told NHTSA they paid:
- A VW dealer cleaned a clogged drain on a 2014 Tiguan for $145, and the leak came back, filed in May 2024.
- A 2019 Nissan Murano owner faced $500 or more to clear the rear drains, which cannot be reached without removing interior trim or the headliner, filed in June 2026.
- Water from the drains of a 2015 Cadillac SRX ruined the liftgate module and motor, and the repair with the drain cleaning came to $1,760.37, filed in February 2023.
GM’s own times show what a drain repair should take. It pays 1.4 hours to replace both front sunroof drain hoses on the 2010 to 2013 Cadillac SRX, $184.80 at $132 an hour, Tekmetric’s US average from June 2026.
On some 2021 to 2023 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade models a kinked drain hose or insulation over a rear drain can cause leaks. GM pays 0.4 hour, $52.80, to clear that insulation.
Make sure the drains are really the cause. A Toyota dealer first offered a $100 drain clearing for a leaking 2022 Highlander, but the leak came from the roof rail clips in a Toyota bulletin, filed in May 2025.

Shattered or Broken Glass
Owners described sunroof glass that suddenly broke while driving. Here is what they paid or were quoted for new glass:
- A glass shop replaced the sunroof glass of a 2014 Honda Civic for $480, filed in April 2023.
- The repair of a 2016 Civic’s sunroof came to $786.72, filed in December 2022.
- A Honda dealer’s bill for the moonroof of a 2020 Civic was $976.66, filed in March 2021.
- A Nissan dealer put the cleanup and new sunroof of a 2020 Murano at about $2,000, filed in October 2024.
- A Toyota dealer billed insurance $2,410 for a 2020 Highlander Hybrid’s sunroof, glass and glass cleanup, with a $500 deductible, filed in May 2022.
So new glass cost owners $480 to $2,410. Their insurers handled broken glass under comprehensive coverage, so the deductible decided what they paid.
Broken Shades, Tracks and Whole Assemblies
The most expensive bills come when the shade, the track or the deflector breaks and a dealer replaces the whole sunroof assembly:
- A Ford dealer wanted $2,100 for a new shade assembly on a 2020 Explorer after one spring broke, filed in November 2025.
- A 2020 Kia Telluride’s broken sunroof was a $3,500 repair, filed in May 2024.
- The rebuilt sunroof of a 2020 Ford Escape cost $3,600, filed in September 2025.
- A Hyundai dealer put a broken track on a 2021 Palisade at about $4,000, filed in June 2026.
- A Kia dealer wanted $5,730 for a new assembly on a 2022 Telluride whose deflector snapped and track broke, filed in October 2024.
- A new assembly on a 2021 Telluride came to $6,441.56 at a Kia dealer, filed in June 2026.
- After its glass shattered, a 2024 Telluride’s sunroof assembly was estimated at $8,260, filed in September 2025.
So a new shade, track or assembly cost owners $2,100 to $8,260, and the Telluride shows up again and again.

Kia’s Cheaper Fix for the Telluride
Kia found that the wind deflector arms and mechanism arms on some 2019 to 2022 Telluride models can break, so the sunroof will not open or close. Its bulletin BOD319 replaces just those arms, and Kia pays 1.0 hour.

With Kia’s parts on a dealer parts website, checked October 13, 2026, and $132 an hour:
So Kia’s partial repair comes to $185.59, plus some white lithium grease. A 2021 Telluride owner was still quoted $4,000 or more for a whole assembly despite this bulletin, filed in July 2026.
Another owner’s dealers tied a 2020 Telluride’s broken parts to BOD319, yet the bill was more than $7,000 for a new assembly, filed in July 2026. Ask whether BOD319 fits your failure before you pay.
Kia has a similar fix for the 2017 to 2022 Sportage. When dirt makes the panoramic sunroof slow, noisy or stuck, its dealers clean and lubricate it and replace the tilt lever shoes, and Kia tells them not to replace the assembly for that.
Recalls That Repair Sunroofs Free
Ford recalled 1,867 2014 Escape models whose front panorama roof glass might not be bonded properly. Dealers replace that glass free, a job of 0.6 hour.
Hyundai recalled 62,811 2015 and 2016 Sonata and Sonata Hybrid models with the panoramic sunroof, because the wind deflector’s anchor plate may come loose. Dealers repair it free.
Mercedes-Benz recalled 15,096 2014 to 2020 models, including C-Class, CLA, GLA, GLC and S-Class cars with a panoramic sunroof, because the fixed front roof panel may not be bonded properly. Dealers replace it free.
