The cloth above your back seat has started to droop, and pushing it up only helps until the next warm afternoon. Before you buy a can of glue, it helps to know what has actually come apart.
So how much does headliner replacement cost? Ian’s Auto Interiors in Las Vegas advertises starting prices of $350 to $750 across its vehicle types, from a regular-cab truck to an SUV. Sunroof work costs extra.
At Pollet Automotive in Fairfax, Virginia, a four-door sedan starts at $425 and an SUV or van at $525. These are local starting prices, checked October 17, 2026, rather than a ceiling for your car.
I will walk you through the shop prices, sunroof extras, DIY materials and older owners’ bills. The biggest saving may come from keeping a sound headliner board and replacing its covering.
What Upholstery Shops Charge
A recover means taking out the molded board, removing the old fabric and foam, fitting fresh material and putting it back. Ian’s Auto Interiors includes removal, recovering and reinstallation in these starting prices:
These prices cover different vehicles at two shops. Ian’s also charges extra for sun visors and nylon or custom material.

Ask for a total that includes tax and any trim repairs, since neither shop’s page spells those out.
Send the shop your year, make, model and photos of the sagging area. Include whether the car has a sunroof, and ask whether the price covers the cloth alone or a new molded board too.
Why a Sunroof Changes the Quote
A sunroof car can have loose cloth around the opening, a sagging sliding shade, or both. Recovering the fixed ceiling does not automatically include repairing the moving shade.
Ian’s Auto Interiors marks sunroof work as an extra but gives no fixed surcharge. I would ask for the shade and fixed headliner to be priced separately, especially if the shade no longer slides properly.
Water stains need a different first step. Have the leak traced before fitting fresh cloth. Our sunroof repair guide covers drains, glass and broken mechanisms that a headliner recover will not fix.
Why Glue, Pins and Steam Can Disappoint
The cloth sits over a thin foam layer on the headliner board. Auto Tops and Trim, an upholstery shop in Monroe, North Carolina, explains that heat and age can turn that foam into powder.

Once the foam crumbles, spraying glue behind the old cloth bonds it to loose debris. The shop also warns that spraying through the cloth can stain the visible surface.
Twist pins can hold the cloth up at a few points, but they leave a patched appearance and do not stop the foam breaking down. Steam may buy time at an early lifting edge; it cannot restore missing foam.
A small edge that has lifted while its backing is still sound may be worth reattaching. When the cloth hangs across much of the roof, a recover replaces the failed layer instead of trying to hold it together.
What DIY Materials Cost
If you are comfortable removing interior trim and handling a large, fragile panel, doing the recover yourself can save the fitting charge. Your Auto Trim sells these fabric-and-adhesive kits:
Your Auto Trim estimates that many four-door cars need 72 inches of cloth, but tells buyers to measure their own headliner. Its page gives conflicting width details, so confirm the usable width before ordering.
Tools, replacement clips and a new board are not included. Check shipping and tax before ordering. The kits provide material for a recover, not a ready-made roof panel that simply clips into your car.
The awkward part is getting a large panel out of a small cabin and refitting the trim without damage. Think about where you will lay it flat to work before you start taking the car apart.
I would leave a complicated sunroof interior to an upholstery shop unless you already know the trim removal process. A cheap kit is less of a saving if you break the board getting it through the door.
What Owners Paid, and One Dealer Quote
These older US accounts on CarComplaints show the difference between a shop repair and a dealer quote. I have kept their original amounts and publication dates, rather than treating them as today’s prices.
- A 2007 Jetta owner in Bonaire, Georgia, paid $400 for a shop to repair the headliner. The post was published July 18, 2016.
- A 2007 Jetta owner in Columbia, South Carolina, reported replacing the sagging headliner for $800, in a post published October 17, 2015.
- A 2001 Civic owner in Paramus, New Jersey, received a dealer offer of about $800 to replace it. The post was published May 4, 2012; no completed replacement was reported.
The Civic owner had already tried having the fabric glued a couple of times, and it kept dropping at the back. That is the frustrating part: paying for a patch can still leave the full job ahead of you.
What to Check Before You Book
If a quote includes a new factory headliner, ask why the existing board cannot be reused. A cracked or badly damaged board changes the job, so a fabric-only price is no longer a fair comparison.
Before agreeing, get the work in writing: material choice, removal and fitting, sunroof shade, visors, damaged clips and any warranty against sagging. Compare quotes for that same work.
Questions About Headliner Replacement
How much does it cost to replace a car’s headliner?
Ian’s Auto Interiors starts at $350 for a regular-cab truck, $450 for a two-door vehicle, $550 for a four-door or crew cab, and $750 for an SUV. Sunroof and custom work add to those prices.
Does replacing the headliner include the sun visors?
Not necessarily. Ian’s Auto Interiors charges extra for sun visors. Include them in your request if their fabric is failing too, or if you want them to match a new color.
Does a headliner kit include the molded board?
The Your Auto Trim kits priced here contain fabric and adhesive. You reuse your existing board; a damaged board needs a separate solution.
Is a sagging sunroof shade the same repair?
No. The sliding shade is a separate part of the roof interior, so ask the shop to price it on its own.
