The shower keeps dripping after you turn the handle off, and the plumber mentions a new valve. That might mean a cartridge behind the handle, or it might mean cutting out the brass body inside the wall.
So shower valve replacement is $1,190 with Moen Chateau trim at Keeley’s Plumbing in Illinois, or $1,440 with a three-hole conversion plate. Its cartridge repairs cost $375 to $505 for the listed Moen, Delta, Pfister and Kohler jobs.
I will show you what each price buys, how pressure-balance and thermostatic options differ, and why access to the pipes can matter more than the handle you choose.
A Cartridge Repair Can Leave the Valve Body Alone
The cartridge is a serviceable part inside the valve. The trim is the handle and cover you see. The valve body connects to the pipes behind the wall. Those three parts should not be confused on an estimate.
Keeley’s 2026 price book gives these cartridge replacement prices:
Its customer-supplied cartridge installation is $310, marked “No Warranty” in the price book. Buying the part yourself therefore changes both the bill and the service terms.
Have the plumber identify the valve before ordering a cartridge. Similar-looking handles do not establish that the internal parts match, and an older three-handle faucet may use separate stems.

When the Whole Shower Valve Needs Replacing
A damaged body or a change to a different valve system means disconnecting the plumbing. Access may be through an adjoining room, an existing panel or an opening behind a larger repair plate.
A conversion plate can cover the old handle openings when changing a multi-handle layout. Ask to see its size and finish before work begins, since it becomes a visible part of the shower.
New valve work does not mean you need a new bath. If the tub itself is damaged, our bathtub replacement guide covers that larger project separately.
Pressure-Balance or Thermostatic?
A pressure-balancing valve compensates for changes in the hot and cold supply pressures. A thermostatic valve responds to the mixed water temperature. Both need the correct cartridge and compatible trim.
Delta’s R10000-UNBX rough-in body has a US list price of $88.20. It accepts different cartridge types, but the cartridge comes with the selected trim rather than this rough-in.
The chrome Lahara Monitor T14038 pressure-balance trim is $189.90 at Delta’s list price. Its cartridge is included; the rough-in is separate.
For those Delta parts, the sum is $88.20 + $189.90 = $278.10 before installation, tax and shipping. That buys the valve body and valve trim, not a complete shower with a showerhead.
The chrome Lahara TempAssure T17T038 thermostatic trim is $570 at list price. With the same Delta rough-in, $570 + $88.20 = $658.20 before those extras.
A compatible trim change can sometimes reuse an existing MultiChoice body. Delta’s product answers specify an R10000 rough-in for T17T038, so an older Delta valve is not automatically compatible.
Opening the Wall and Putting It Back
First find out what is behind the shower. An accessible closet wall offers a different repair route from tile on both sides. Ask who will close the opening and whether a removable access panel is suitable.

A plumbing price may stop when the valve works and the trim is fitted. Drywall patching, paint, replacement tile and restoring the waterproofing need a named person and an agreed scope.
If the tile is discontinued, a small access hole can leave a hard matching problem. I would settle the access route before selecting an expensive trim finish.
Keep the finished wall thickness in mind too. The valve must sit at the depth required by its trim, or the handle and cover may not fit properly once the wall is repaired.
Permits Depend on What Is Being Changed
Philadelphia’s plumbing permit guidance covers installation, alteration, replacement and repair, but exempts minor same-material repairs, including replacing faucets, valves and parts.
Ask your local building department how it treats a cartridge service versus replacing piped-in valve equipment. Put any required permit and inspection responsibility in the quote; there is no single nationwide permit fee.
Two Quotes One Owner Received
One San Antonio owner posted two proposals for an exposed-pipe job. These are dated quotes from one household, not paid invoices:
- On April 20, 2018, a San Antonio owner on Houzz described a $550 installation quote with the pipes already exposed and the valve and cartridge already purchased.
- That same Houzz owner received a $225 telephone quote from another company for the exposed-pipe job. The post does not give a final bill.
Questions Before You Replace a Shower Valve
Can I change the showerhead without replacing the valve?
A showerhead is separate from the valve body. Choose a compatible connection and flow rating; changing the head alone does not require changing the mixing controls behind the wall.
Does a trim kit always include the valve body?
No. The Delta kits priced here include their cartridges but require a separately purchased rough-in body. Read the contents of the exact kit before comparing its price with an installed package.
