You find a tub you like, then the installation quote costs several times more than the tub. That can make sense once the old bath, damaged tile and drain work are included, but you need to know what you are buying.
So a like-for-like acrylic alcove bathtub replacement runs $1,500 to $4,500 installed at Fortune Homes MD in Maryland. A new tile surround takes its range to $2,500 to $7,000.
I will compare a straightforward tub swap with a freestanding bath and a tub-to-shower conversion. The useful starting point is whether you are keeping the same space and plumbing.
Keeping the Tub in the Same Place
A replacement that fits the existing alcove gives you fewer things to change. Match the length, width and drain side before ordering, and have the installer check the opening rather than measuring only the visible rim.
Home Therapist in Tampa Bay advertises a new 60-by-30-inch bathtub installed for $1,199. Its 60-by-42-inch Kohler drop-in replacement is $2,499, without the faucet.
Those Home Therapist prices exclude tile and drywall finish work. Its page describes removing the old tub and setting the replacement; confirm hauling and any repairs when booking.
Fortune Homes MD’s alcove packages include the tub, surround and plumbing. Here are its published installed ranges, with the type of job kept separate:
Buying the tub yourself does not remove the fitting cost. Home Therapist’s customer-supplied tub installation is $899, including freestanding tubs, with finish work still outside the price.

Why a Freestanding Bath Can Mean More Work
Fortune Homes MD identifies floor plumbing changes and reinforcement for heavier cast-iron tubs as possible work when fitting a freestanding bath.
The faucet matters too. A tub with no tap deck needs a compatible wall or floor-mounted filler. Choose the tub and faucet together so the plumber can check the water connections and clearances.
A drop-in bath sits in a built platform, which is another part of the job to price. Fortune Homes MD separates platform work from a simple alcove replacement for that reason.
Cost to Replace a Bathtub With a Shower
A shower conversion changes the waterproof floor, drain and wall finish. PRG Home Improvement publishes these installed, permitted prices for keeping the shower in the tub’s footprint in Anne Arundel and Howard Counties, Maryland:
PRG’s itemized example puts tub removal and disposal at $300 to $700. Treat that as a component of the conversion budget, not an extra to add again to its complete ranges.
A lower threshold does not come from removing the tub alone. PRG explains that a curbless shower needs floor preparation, while glass can have its own measuring and delivery schedule after tiling.
The Work Around the Bath
Removing an alcove tub can disturb the bottom of the surround. A matching replacement tile may be hard to find, so decide whether the quote allows for a small repair or rebuilding the walls around the bath.

Tile is the visible finish. The backing, waterproofing and connection to the tub flange or shower base need to form a complete system behind it. PRG highlights this hidden work in its conversion guide.
Have the contractor check the waste, overflow, trap and valve while access is open. Moving them changes the job; a leak from one of those fittings does not always require a new tub.
Permit requirements depend on your location and the plumbing changes. PRG includes permits in its local conversion ranges. Ask who will obtain the required approval and arrange inspections for your own project.
I would get the estimate to name removal, hauling, the exact tub, fixtures, plumbing, wall and floor repairs, and finishing. Ask how hidden wet framing will be priced before demolition starts.
What Owners Paid for Bigger Bathroom Jobs
Three owners in a March 2026 DC Urban Moms discussion shared bills that included much more than a tub. They help show what happens when the project spreads to the whole room:
- March 13, 12:01: about $15,000 for a small bathroom with a new tub-shower combination, wall and floor tile, vanity, toilet, paint and wainscoting.
- March 15, 11:08: just under $18,000, including about $10,000 labor, for removing a tub and building a shower, plus flooring, vanity, toilet, fan, lighting, outlets and other finishes.
- March 15, 16:34: $19,000 for a same-footprint tub-to-shower conversion with a new vanity, fixtures, toilet and paint.
These are full-room totals from a Washington-area forum, not tub replacement rates. Keeping a sound vanity and floor can keep your scope much closer to the contractor examples above.
Questions Before You Order a Replacement Tub
Is a shower conversion cheaper than a new tub?
Compare equivalent scopes. Fortune Homes MD starts its like-for-like alcove range at $1,500, while PRG’s local prefab shower conversion range starts at $3,500. They are different contractors and packages.
Does a tub price include the faucet and drain?
Check the product and installation descriptions. Home Therapist specifically excludes the faucet from its Kohler drop-in replacement price. A tub, filler and waste kit may be separate purchases.
