You want to lose the yellow bulbs and dated rings in your ceiling. Before paying for new holes and wiring, check whether LED inserts will fit the recessed cans already there.
So the price depends on what you are changing. Maxxima sells twelve LED retrofit inserts for $119.99, before fitting. Alpharetta Electricians publishes $100 to $300 per light for installation in an existing ceiling.
I will separate those two jobs, explain the insulation rating, and show what homeowners paid for wiring and installation. US prices were checked October 19, 2026.
Replacing the Trim or Removing the Can?
A retrofit insert combines the LED light and visible trim. It fits a compatible existing housing, so you may be able to keep the can, wiring and ceiling opening.
Maxxima’s MRL-615205B-12 pack fits most 5- or 6-inch cans and includes E26 connectors. Its $119.99 price buys twelve black-trim inserts, not installation.
Have the housing and connector checked before ordering. A ceiling opening that measures roughly the right size does not prove that the clips, depth or electrical connection will fit.
A canless wafer is a different fixture. It clips into the ceiling and connects to its own junction box instead of sitting in the old can. Removing a housing or changing the opening adds work to that conversion.

What the Light Itself Costs
The MRL-S61245 wafer has selectable light color and an IC rating. At Maxxima’s price, six fixtures are 6 × $14.99 = $89.94 before fitting or any checkout charges.
Ask which fixtures an installed quote includes. Adding a separate shopping total to a package that already includes the lights would count them twice.
Electrician Prices for New Light Positions
Here, “existing ceiling” means cutting and wiring new light positions in a finished ceiling. It is more work than replacing inserts in cans that already have power.
Using Alpharetta Electricians’ existing-ceiling rates, six lights work out to 6 × $100 = $600 to 6 × $300 = $1,800. Confirm what ceiling repairs and painting your quote includes.
When you only need existing lights changed, ask for a replacement-only quote. Artisan Electric in Indiana bills a single-journeyman service call at $160 for the first hour and $110 for each additional hour, with materials extra.
Artisan includes travel in billed service time. That explains why changing one insert can cost much more than its shelf price; it does not tell us how many inserts your electrician can replace in an hour.
Insulation Above the Lights Changes the Choice
IC means insulation contact. The complete fixture must be suitable for the insulation around it; putting an LED insert in an old can does not by itself change the can’s rating.
For example, HALO’s E7TAT housing accepts compatible LED retrofits but still requires insulation to stay three inches from all sides. It is a non-IC housing.

Have the electrician check the actual housing label and installation instructions before insulation is added. If both jobs are planned, coordinate the lighting with attic insulation replacement.
Wiring, Dimmers and Ceiling Repairs
An open attic gives the electrician room to route wiring. A finished room above can mean fishing cable through framing and making access holes. The light’s thin shape does not remove the need for a wiring route.
Maxxima specifies a 150-watt LED dimmer for up to ten of its MRL-615205B-12 inserts. Their listed dimming range is 20% to 100%, so do not expect them to dim all the way down.
A new lighting circuit is separate from swapping a failed breaker. If your quote includes panel work, our circuit breaker replacement guide explains that distinction.
Permit rules depend on the work and location. Seattle requires an electrical permit for installing or altering wiring. Have your electrician confirm local requirements before new wiring begins.
What Homeowners Paid
These Arlington-area DC Urban Moms posts are from January 2021. They show the difference between labor alone and a larger renovation bill.
- On January 23 at 21:41, an owner reported about $2,600 for seventeen recessed lights, supplies and labor. It was part of a renovation.
- On January 23 at 22:57, another owner recalled $1,000 four years earlier for six lights, two dimmer switches, plaster repair and paint. A handyman had done the work.
- On January 24 at 10:48, an owner reported $100 per light for labor a few months earlier. The unfinished attic made wiring access easy.
Questions About Replacing Recessed Lights
Can I Change Only the Bulb?
If the fixture has a replaceable bulb and is working properly, a compatible LED bulb may be enough. An integrated LED insert is a different purchase that changes the visible trim too.
Does a Slim Wafer Fit Every Old Can Opening?
No. Compare the manufacturer’s cutout dimensions with the opening left after removal. A larger opening may need a suitable trim solution or ceiling repair.
Should All the Lights Use the Same Color Setting?
For an even look across one room, match the color settings before installation. Try the chosen setting in the room before the whole set is fitted.
