Short answer

Replacing a rear differential cost owners $2,500 to $6,000 at dealers and repair shops since 2025. A repair costs less: an Orlando shop charges $80 to $150 for a fluid change and $800 to $2,000 for a rebuild, and Ram, GM and Ford tell their dealers to try fresh fluid first for some noises.

You hear a whine from the back of the car at highway speed, a grind in tight turns, or you see gear oil under the rear axle. The shop says the rear differential is going, and you want to know what it will cost before you agree.

So how much does rear differential replacement cost? Owners told NHTSA, the US road safety agency, they paid or were quoted $2,500 to $6,000 at dealers and repair shops since 2025 for a new rear differential.

A repair can cost far less. At Irish Mike’s, a repair shop in Orlando, a rebuild is $800 to $2,000 and a fluid change $80 to $150. For some noises, Ram, GM and Ford tell their dealers to change the fluid before they replace parts.

In this guide I will show you what owners paid, what shops charge for each repair, what the carmakers’ parts and times come to, when fresh fluid fixes the noise, and the signs to listen for.

What Owners Paid

Here is what owners told NHTSA they paid or were quoted, with a link to each complaint:

  • A repair shop replaced the rear differential of a 2020 Ford Edge that ground in turns for $2,500, filed in October 2025.
  • Another 2020 Edge needed a whole new rear differential at about 52,000 miles, about $2,750 at a reduced price with fluids and calibration, filed in October 2025.
  • A shop found metal shavings in the differential of a 2015 Mustang at 62,000 miles and put the repair at about $3,000, filed in July 2025.
  • The rear drive unit of a 2022 Bronco Sport was failing at 82,053 miles, with a repair quoted at about $4,000, filed in September 2026.
  • A Nissan dealer quoted $4,700 for a new rear differential on a 2016 Rogue, filed in May 2025.
  • Replacing the whole rear differential of a 2019 RAV4 cost $4,800, and Toyota agreed to pay half, filed in March 2025.
  • A Mazda dealer said the leaking rear differential of a 2018 CX-5 at 98,914 miles needed replacing for $5,003.33, filed in June 2026.
  • A Jeep dealer put the rear differential repair of a 2019 Cherokee at $6,000, filed in October 2025.

So owners paid or were quoted $2,500 to $6,000 for a new rear differential, most of them on all wheel drive SUVs.

What Repair Shops Charge

Not every differential problem needs a new one. Irish Mike’s in Orlando prices each repair, from April 2026:

Fluid changefluid type and amount$80–$150
Fluid change, limited slipwith friction additive$100–$180
Axle sealdepends on access$150–$350
Pinion sealdriveshaft comes off$200–$400
Differential bearingsoften done together$400–$900
Ring and pinion gearsparts and teardown$600–$1,500
Complete rebuildall worn parts$800–$2,000
Remanufactured differentialrebuilt unit$900–$2,500
New differentialby make and type$1,500–$4,000+

Luxury Auto Works, a shop in Austin, charges $129 to $249 per axle for a differential fluid service, and $180 to $450 for differential or axle seals with the fluid.

What the Carmakers’ Parts and Times Come To

Ram replaced the whole rear axle on some 2017 Ram 1500 trucks with the 5.7 Hemi that started to whine, and paid its dealers 2.6 hours for it on trucks without air suspension.

With Ram’s parts on a dealer parts website, checked October 13, 2026, and $132 an hour, Tekmetric’s US average from June 2026:

Complete rear axle68334753AG, 2013 to 2020 Ram 1500$3,531.60
Four control arm bolts4 x $14.50$58.00
Four control arm nuts4 x $5.13$20.52
Track bar bolt and nut$5.18 + $6.93$12.11
Labor, 2.6 hoursRam’s time for the job$343.20

So a complete Ram 1500 rear axle comes to $3,622.23 in parts and $3,965.43 in all. Most shops replace only the gears inside, which is why their prices start lower.

Toyota replaces the rear differential carrier on some 2019 and 2020 RAV4 Limited and Adventure models whose AWD light comes on with code C13F800. Under its 5 year or 60,000 mile powertrain warranty that is free.

Past it, Toyota’s carrier is $1,640.35 and its bolts, nuts and gear oil $110.27. With Toyota’s 5.4 hours, including the AWD computer update, that comes to $2,463.42, about half of the $4,800 bill above.

Try the Fluid First

In Ram’s bulletins, a chatter or shudder from the rear axle in turns can come from worn out fluid, on 2016 to 2018 Ram 2500 and 3500 and 2020 and 2021 Ram 1500 trucks. The dealer changes the fluid first, before replacing any parts.

GM’s answer to a moan in the first turns on 2021 to 2024 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade models with a limited slip rear axle is fresh fluid as well. The dealer drains and refills it up to three times, 0.6 hour each.

Ford’s February 2026 fix for a shudder in low speed turns on the 2019 to 2024 Edge and 2019 to 2023 Nautilus is a drain and refill too, 0.4 hour.

On the 2020 to 2024 Escape and 2021 to 2024 Bronco Sport 1.5 the fix is a clutch kit inside the rear drive unit.

That kit is $210.94, and Ford pays 6.1 hours on the 1.5, so $1,016.14 before the seals, bolts and fluid on its list.

If a shop quotes a whole new unit for a shudder in turns on one of these Fords, ask about this bulletin first.

Some carmakers also call for a fluid change as maintenance. An Acura dealer charged $315 for a differential service on a 2023 RDX at 10,771 miles, and Honda said it was regular maintenance, filed in June 2023.

Warranty and Goodwill

A rear differential is a powertrain part, so check the powertrain warranty first. When it has run out, ask the carmaker for help anyway. Toyota paid half for the RAV4 owner above.

Jeep paid 80% of a bill over $5,000 for a 2020 Cherokee, and the owner paid $1,237, filed in September 2026.

Ask what the new part’s warranty covers too. The owner of a 2021 Chevrolet Colorado paid $1,800 toward a new rear differential in May 2025 and was told in September 2026 that it had failed again, filed in October 2026.

Signs Your Rear Differential Is Failing

Each sign points to a likely cause, in Irish Mike’s guide. A whine or howl at highway speed points to worn gears or low fluid, and grinding in corners to a bearing or the small spider gears inside.

A clunk when you speed up or slow down can be worn U-joints or spider gears, and a vibration through the seat a pinion bearing or the driveshaft.

Gear oil under the rear means a seal, and a burning gear oil smell means the fluid got too hot.

Do not wait on a grinding differential. A mechanic found a 2020 Edge low on fluid and noisy in turns, and advised the owner to stop driving it because it could come apart, filed in July 2026.

Rear Differential Questions You Might Have

How much does it cost to replace a rear differential?

Owners paid or were quoted $2,500 to $6,000 at dealers and repair shops since 2025. An Orlando shop prices a new differential at $1,500 to $4,000 or more and a remanufactured one at $900 to $2,500.

How much does it cost to repair a rear differential?

At the Orlando shop a fluid change is $80 to $150, a pinion seal $200 to $400, new ring and pinion gears $600 to $1,500 and a complete rebuild $800 to $2,000.

Can a fluid change fix a noisy rear differential?

Sometimes. Ram, GM and Ford all tell their dealers to change the fluid first for a chatter, moan or shudder in turns on some models, before they replace parts.

How long does it take to replace a rear differential?

Ram pays 2.6 hours for a complete rear axle on the 2017 Ram 1500, and Toyota 5.4 hours for the rear differential carrier on the 2019 and 2020 RAV4.

Is it safe to drive with a bad rear differential?

Not for long. A whine can be watched for a short time, but a grinding differential can come apart, and one Edge owner’s mechanic advised to stop driving.
