You ask for a differential fluid change, but the estimate mentions the front axle, rear axle and transfer case. Before comparing the total with an oil change, find out how many separate housings the quote covers.
So differential fluid service is $80 to $150 on Irish Mike’s Orlando menu, or $100 to $180 for its limited-slip service. Luxury Auto Works in Austin advertises $129 to $249 per axle, depending on fluid, capacity and cover sealing.
I checked these US shop pages on October 22, 2026. I will compare one-axle prices with multi-fluid quotes, show what owners reported and explain why the correct fluid matters as much as the labor charge.
Shop Prices for Differential Fluid Service
Irish Mike’s separates standard fluid work from limited-slip service in its Orlando guide. The limited-slip line includes a friction additive in the shop’s described service.
Luxury Auto Works links its range to fluid type, capacity and whether a cover gasket or sealant is needed. Ask which of those applies to the estimate for your car.
These are local menu examples, not a national average. They do not include an assumed transmission service or a transfer-case service just because all the work is described as drivetrain maintenance.
One Axle and Two Axles Are Different Quotes
At the Austin shop’s published rate, servicing two separately priced axles calculates as 2 x $129 = $258 at the low end and 2 x $249 = $498 at the high end.
Those are calculations from its per-axle range, not an advertised two-axle package. A shop may quote a package differently, and any transfer-case work needs its own scope.
Ask the adviser to name each housing and its fluid. Do not assume every AWD or 4WD vehicle has the same layout or needs the same combination of separate fluid services.
A fluid service also differs from replacing the unit. If the estimate is for gears, bearings or a whole assembly, my rear differential repair and replacement guide covers that larger job.
What Owners Paid or Were Quoted
A 2023 Acura RDX owner reported a dealer charge of $315 for differential service at 10,771 miles, filed June 27, 2023. The owner reported that Honda treated it as maintenance.
That complaint gives the service charge but no itemized fluid or labor breakdown. It does not establish a standard Acura rate or determine whether another vehicle’s repair belongs under warranty.
On September 28, 2020, Tacoma World member Knute reported Central Iowa quotes of $85 for each differential and $150 for the transfer case.
The member’s $320 total covered the front differential, rear differential and transfer case. It was not a $320 rear-differential-only quote. The post describes quotes, rather than a paid invoice.
The same thread’s Florida owner, TacomaJack099, reported a $450 quote on September 27, 2020 for both differentials, the transmission and transfer case.
That bundled quote covered a 2007 manual 4WD Tacoma. Comparing it directly with a one-axle drain and refill would compare different work, even before accounting for its date.
Use the Fluid Specified for the Vehicle
Honda’s 2023 CR-V specifications name Honda DPSF-II for the rear differential. That example shows why a generic gear-oil price cannot be assumed for every AWD unit.
The same model’s maintenance information identifies rear differential fluid under maintenance sub-item 6 on applicable vehicles.
Follow the actual manual and service indicator for your car. A forum interval or another model’s bottle specification does not establish the right service for yours.
Also confirm whether an additive is required, already included in the approved fluid or inappropriate for the application. The Orlando shop’s limited-slip menu does not mean every differential needs an extra bottle.
Ask About Cover Removal and Leaks
The Austin shop’s price can change when the service needs a cover gasket or sealant. Ask whether the quote is a drain and refill through the plugs or includes removing and resealing a cover.
If fluid is leaking, identify the repair separately. Irish Mike’s prices an axle seal at $150 to $350 and a pinion seal at $200 to $400, different jobs from a routine fluid change.
A service quote should also explain any noise, damage or contamination the inspection finds. Fresh fluid should not be presented as a guaranteed repair for damaged gears or bearings.
Differential Fluid Service Questions
Is differential fluid the same as transmission fluid?
Do not assume so. The correct fluid depends on the particular housing and vehicle. Ask the shop to identify each service and use the manufacturer’s specification for that unit.
Is the advertised price for both axles?
Check the unit. Luxury Auto Works states its price per axle. The dated Tacoma quotes above separately name the front differential, rear differential and transfer case.
Does a limited-slip differential always need an extra additive?
Follow the vehicle and fluid specification. The Orlando shop describes an additive in its limited-slip service, but that menu does not establish the requirement for every differential.
Will a fluid change fix a failing differential?
It is maintenance, not a replacement for diagnosing damaged gears, bearings or leaks. Ask the shop what it found and which repair, if any, is needed beyond the fluid service.
