Your pool pump has started grinding, and the repair quote is for a whole new pump. Before you agree, find out whether the motor has failed or the water-carrying housing needs replacing too.
So pool pump replacement costs $985 to $2,750 installed at A Reliable Pool Service in Brevard County, Florida. Its motor-only replacement is $405 to $780 when the wet end is still sound.
I will help you separate those jobs, compare variable-speed options and see what plumbing, controls and rebates do to the bill.
Motor Replacement or a Complete Pump?
The motor turns the impeller. The wet end is the part that handles the water, including the housing and impeller. Replacing a motor can leave that housing and its pipe connections in place.

A Reliable Pool Service’s September 2026 prices separate the work this way:
A leaking shaft seal and a cracked housing are different problems. Have the technician identify the failed part before choosing between a seal repair, motor replacement and a complete pump.
A Reliable credits its $125 service call toward accepted work. Its totally enclosed motor option adds $75 to $150, depending on size.
What Variable-Speed Pumps Cost Installed
A variable-speed pump can run more slowly for filtration and faster when the equipment needs more flow. Buying extra horsepower alone does not tell you how well it will suit your pool.
Affordable Pool Care in Riverside, California, publishes these installed planning ranges, updated August 2026:
Those packages include equipment, tax, markup, typical labor, unions, wiring and programming. Extensive replumbing or major electrical corrections can sit outside the package.
The company’s separate installation labor range is $350 to $675. Do not add that again to its installed prices.
These are contractor prices. Pentair’s WhisperFlo VST product page sends buyers to dealers instead of publishing a US list price.
Horsepower, Pipework and Wiring
Give the installer the old pump model and details of your filter, spa, cleaner and water features. The replacement needs to provide the required flow through that equipment without exceeding its limits.

Pentair rates WhisperFlo VST model 011533 at 2.6 total horsepower, with 2-inch ports and 115/208-230-volt input. Those specifications help compare fit; they are not a recommendation for every pool.
Pipe height and position matter. A pump that does not line up with the old inlet and outlet may need new unions, elbows or a different position on the pad.
Agree on who checks the existing electrical supply, grounding and bonding, and whether the new controls work with your automation. Affordable Pool Care includes wiring and programming in its normal installation scope.
Keep unrelated pool work separate. A tear in the vinyl belongs in the pool liner replacement budget; buying a pump will not fix it.
What the Federal Pool Pump Rule Means
The Department of Energy’s pump standards govern equipment manufactured and distributed in commerce. They do not mean every working single-speed pump must be removed today.
Replacement motors have their own rule. DOE’s April 24, 2026 enforcement notice concerns the variable-speed requirement for certain motors.
It delays enforcement for small-size motors manufactured from September 28, 2027, through the period before March 26, 2029. That is a specific motor category, not a blanket exemption for every pump.
I would have the installer confirm the proposed model meets the rules for your location. A single-speed model advertised in Florida does not establish that the same installation is allowed in California.
A Utility Rebate Can Reduce Your Cost
Riverside Public Utilities offers eligible residential electric customers $200 per qualifying pool or spa pump, with a maximum of two pumps.
The program requires a qualifying variable-speed or multi-flow pump with the appropriate controller. Two-speed pumps do not qualify, and the unit must be installed at the customer’s service address.
Check the exact model before buying, then retain the receipt and efficiency information for the application. A rebate from another city’s utility does not apply to your account.
What Pool Owners Paid
These older accounts show different ways the money was spent. They are useful comparisons of scope, rather than today’s installation offers:
- A Spring Hill, Florida owner reported paying $700 including shipping and tax for a Hayward variable-speed pump, on January 21, 2016. Installation was not included in that reported purchase price.
- On July 3, 2017, Solar Panel Talk member jasonvr reported $851.19 for a pump and union after a coupon, plus $50 paid for installation help. Rebates and selling the old pump reduced the owner’s net spending.
- A Bonita, California owner described a $55 deductible on each of two warranty visits involving a pump and filter, on April 28, 2013. That was the owner’s share under coverage, not the equipment’s retail price.
Before accepting your own quote, get the pump model, repair scope, tax, disposal and warranty in writing. A complete installed price is easier to compare than a cheap pump followed by unspecified extras.
Questions About Replacing a Pool Pump
Will a pump that loses prime always need replacing?
No. A Reliable identifies lid seals, drain plugs, unions and suction-side valves as possible places for air to enter. Finding the air leak comes before ordering a pump.
Can I keep my existing automation?
Sometimes. The installer needs to confirm compatibility between the pump’s controls and the automation system. A Reliable identifies matching the automation brand as one factor in its replacement price.
