The pool is losing water again, and this time the old liner has a tear where another patch may not hold. Before you order a replacement, check whether the price covers the vinyl alone or the whole job.
So pool liner replacement costs $4,100 to $4,800 for a standard 16-by-32-foot inground pool at S&R Pools in New Jersey. Above ground, Shade Builder’s Phoenix-area liner installation rates start at $375, with the liner bought separately.
I will separate those two jobs, show what a liner costs at a pool shop, and explain the extras that can turn a cheap order into a much larger bill.
Above-Ground Pool Liner Replacement Cost
A round above-ground pool uses a stock liner matched to its size and attachment. Shade Builder publishes these liner installation prices for its Phoenix-area work:
The liner is a separate purchase. Royal Swimming Pools has a Swimline solid-blue 24-foot round overlap liner for $300, made for walls from 48 to 52 inches high and labeled 20GA.
Using that Royal liner and Shade Builder’s 24-foot labor rate gives $300 + $600 = $900 before water, supplies and repairs. This combines two sellers’ prices; it is not an offered package.
An oval pool needs an oval liner. A deeper center also changes the order: Royal’s fitting guide calls for an expandable liner when the pool has a deep end, rather than a standard flat-bottom liner.
What an Inground Liner Costs
An inground liner is measured to the pool’s walls, slopes and floor. S&R Pools’ smaller jobs around 12 by 24 feet start at about $2,800; its standard 16-by-32-foot replacement range is $4,100 to $4,800.
Royal Swimming Pools sells a 12-by-24-foot premium inground liner from $1,037.99 before fitting. Its order form adds charges for some shapes, depths and vinyl-covered steps.
That shop price helps explain the bill, but it does not buy removal, floor repairs or an installer. A pool with a damaged base cannot be priced as though the old vinyl simply lifts out and the new one drops in.
Steps deserve a close look on the order. A separate molded step has seals around its opening; vinyl-covered steps need the liner made to their shape. S&R identifies step configuration as one reason its replacement price changes.
Overlap, Beaded and Thicker Liners
Overlap liners fold over the pool wall and are held by coping strips. Beaded liners lock into a receiver track. Royal’s installation guide explains that changing from overlap to beaded can mean buying that track too.

A unibead liner can hang from the wall with its J-shaped edge or, when designed for it, work in a bead receiver. Match the pool’s wall height and fittings before choosing a pattern.
Do not compare gauge numbers as though they were exact thicknesses. Royal explains that mil is a measured thickness, while vinyl liner gauge is an estimate. Ask for the wall and floor thickness in mils.
Patterns can change the price too. Have the installer price your chosen pattern and thickness together, so the attractive sample you pick is the liner actually included in the order.
Water, Foam and Seals Belong in the Budget
Draining and refilling are separate questions. S&R asks customers to confirm the water-removal and refill arrangements with their estimate. Do not assume an installed liner price includes delivered water.

Agree with the installer on where drained water will go. Royal’s fitting guide warns that flooding the ground around an above-ground pool can weaken its base.
Wall foam cushions the liner against rough walls. Cove material forms the transition between the wall and floor. In The Swim recommends checking these protective materials when replacing an above-ground liner.
Its liner-accessory guidance also calls for fresh gaskets at skimmers, returns, drains, lights and step seals. Have the installer identify which fittings your pool has and which faceplates need replacement.
Before work begins, get one itemized quote covering the liner, removal and disposal, base and wall preparation, foam and cove, seals, fitting and water. Royal also calls for smoothing the floor and preparing rusty wall areas.
Repair It or Replace It?
A leak around a fitting does not automatically mean the whole liner has failed. Have the leak located before buying vinyl; a seal problem and widespread brittle material need different repairs.
I would put an inground replacement in experienced hands, especially with steps or an uneven floor. A wrong measurement or an opening cut in the wrong place can waste a custom-made liner.
Keep deck repairs separate from the pool work. If access requires rebuilding damaged boards around an above-ground pool, our deck replacement guide explains the difference between new boards and a new frame.
Questions About Replacing a Pool Liner
Should I drain a newly filled pool to remove liner wrinkles?
No. Royal’s installation guide warns that draining the pool to remove wrinkles risks damage. Work out wrinkles before filling.
