You have been told an ignition coil has failed, but the estimate includes a whole set. Before you approve it, find out whether your engine has separate coils and how much of the bill is access.
So one accessible coil works out at $138 to $356 using Luxury Auto Works’ Austin parts, hours and hourly-rate guidance. That is my calculation before diagnosis, tax and fees, rather than a fitted-price offer.
I will show you the sums, actual retail parts and three dated owner accounts. If the cause is still uncertain, start with our misfire repair guide before buying ignition parts.
What One Coil Costs to Replace
Luxury Auto Works gives $80 to $200 per coil for OE or equivalent parts on European and luxury imports. Its easy-access inline-four example takes 0.4 to 0.8 hour for one coil.
The same shop’s local specialist-rate guidance is $145 to $195 an hour. Combining the lower and upper ends gives these worked examples:
These sums apply to the accessible single-coil example. They leave out diagnosis and other repairs, and they do not describe the price of every car in the US.

FIX Service in Staten Island advertises ignition coil replacement starting at $120. Its page does not establish the part count or everything included at that starting price, so request the complete scope before booking.
One Coil, a Coil Pack or All the Coils?
Delphi describes both individual coils and several coils molded into one housing. That is why the words “coil pack” alone do not tell you how many separately replaceable parts your engine uses.
With individual coil-on-plug units, the Austin shop explains that the failed unit can be replaced on its own. A combined housing may require replacing the assembly even when the fault affects only part of it.
For an older engine with several aging coils, ask for the extra cost of the remaining units during the same visit. Keep that optional work separate from the repair that testing supports.
A new set of coils is also separate from routine spark plug replacement. If the estimate is called a vehicle tune-up, have the shop name the parts included.
Retail Parts With Clear Quantities
FCP Euro has two Mini Cooper coil listings using reference number 12137510738. Both exclude the spark plug connector. Checked October 25, 2026, the parts-only prices were:
The VW kit’s component rows total $349.36 for four coils + $103.96 for four plugs = $453.32 at FCP Euro. The kit is for selected Jetta, Golf and Golf Sportwagen applications; confirm your vehicle’s fitment.

Buying that kit does not pay for installation. Shipping, tax and any missing connectors or other required parts also need to be considered before comparing it with a shop’s complete bill.
Why Reaching the Coil Can Cost More
Luxury Auto Works allows 1.0 to 2.0 hours in its tight-access transverse V6 examples, depending on intake removal. Its V8 and twin-turbo examples extend to 1.0 to 3.0 hours or more.
Those are engine-layout examples, not labor times for your VIN. The estimate should identify the removal work and any seals needed to put the engine back together.
Diagnosis matters too. Delphi’s testing guidance checks the coil’s supply circuit and spark plug condition. A misfire code alone does not tell you which coil to replace.
What Owners Paid or Were Quoted
These CarComplaints accounts show the difference between an individual repair, customer-supplied parts and difficult access. The dates belong to the original reports, not today’s shop menus.
- A 1999 Maxima owner in Ellenwood, Georgia described two dealer coil replacements at around $250 each. The report is dated May 15, 2005, and its narrative also describes a later July failure.
- A Columbia, Maryland Maxima owner bought coils for $364.63 and arranged fitting for $130, in an account dated March 15, 2006. Their figures add up to $364.63 + $130 = $494.63.
- A 2015 Wrangler owner in Monterey Park, California described a quote over $700 for a coil, intake removal and gasket in a June 18, 2020 update. The post does not confirm a final paid bill.
The Maryland owner reported no further trouble after the coils were replaced.
Before You Agree to the Work
I would want the failed cylinder or assembly identified, the coil brand and quantity, the labor operations and the diagnosis charge on one estimate. That makes a single-unit repair easier to compare with a set.
If inspection finds oil or moisture around the ignition parts, include the source of that contamination in the repair discussion. The Austin shop describes both as causes of repeat coil trouble.
Rough running or power loss deserves prompt attention. The Austin shop warns that continued misfiring can damage the catalytic converter; stop safely and arrange help if the car is running badly.
Questions About Ignition Coil Prices
Is the $138 to $356 range a national average?
No. It is our worked example using Luxury Auto Works’ Austin guidance: $80 + 0.4 x $145 = $138, and $200 + 0.8 x $195 = $356. Diagnosis, tax and fees are separate.
Do all ignition coils need replacing together?
An individual coil-on-plug unit can be replaced separately. A molded assembly is different.
Does the Mini coil price include the connector?
The two FCP Euro Mini listings used here exclude the spark plug connector.
Does the VW kit price cover fitting?
No. FCP Euro’s KIT-02387 listing is for four coils and four plugs. Installation is a separate service.
