Your older car runs fine with your foot on the gas, then struggles to stay running at a stoplight. The shop suspects the idle air control valve, and you want to know whether it needs cleaning or replacing.
So how much does IAC valve replacement cost? YourMechanic’s estimates for the three older gas models below run from $315.13 for a Ranger to $790.44 for a Camry, with an Accord between them.
The valve alone can be a big part of the bill. The available genuine valves in these FordPartsGiant, ToyotaPartsDeal and HondaPartsNow examples range from $77.34 to $442.76.
I will walk you through those prices, when cleaning makes sense, and what US owners paid or were quoted. There is a Ford warning worth reading before you buy a can of cleaner.
What It Costs to Replace an IAC Valve
These are YourMechanic’s published replacement estimates, checked October 17, 2026. They are examples for the engines shown; a booking quote needs your car and location.
Ask what the total includes: diagnosis, the valve and seal, labor, any required idle relearn, tax and shop fees. A price for the part alone will not tell you whether the full repair quote is fair.
Can You Clean It First?
Sometimes you can. Walker Products, which makes IAC motors, explains that removing carbon buildup can restore operation. Cleaning will not repair an electrical failure or worn mechanical parts.
But Ford’s bulletin 03-3-5 explicitly tells technicians not to clean the IAC valve on its listed vehicles. Cleaner may improve the idle briefly while damaging the valve’s long-term operation.
That bulletin covers 2000 to 2003 Rangers, Explorers, Tauruses, Sables and Mountaineers, plus certain Explorer Sport, Sport Trac, Lincoln LS and Thunderbird models.
So I would ask about cleaning only after checking the service instructions for your engine. The air passage may still need cleaning even when the valve itself must be replaced.
Genuine Valve Prices by Make
Here are genuine valve prices checked October 17, 2026. The DX/VP valve is marked discontinued, though its catalog still shows a price.
Labor, shipping, tax and any separately sold seals are extra. These are different cars from the fitted examples above.
Match the part to your VIN and engine before ordering. Toyota’s catalog has several valves for the same Camry model year, while the Accord V6 and DX or VP use different assemblies.

If the shop offers an aftermarket valve, ask for its brand, part number and warranty. Then compare the fitted quote with the genuine option for your car, rather than choosing from a photo that looks similar.
Make Sure It Really Is the Idle Valve
The IAC valve controls a small air passage around the throttle plate. That lets the engine keep running with your foot off the gas, and supplies extra air when a load such as the air conditioning comes on.

A rough idle does not identify the failed part. HELLA’s diagnostic guidance includes checking the electrical supply, the valve’s coil and its movement, as well as reading fault codes.
Ford’s bulletin also calls for checking hoses and the PCV system for leaks. Air coming through a cracked hose can make the idle too high even while the computer is trying to close the IAC valve.
If that is what the shop finds, our vacuum leak repair guide covers the hose and gasket repairs.
Some cars use an electronic throttle instead of a separate idle valve. Ford’s 2010 Escape 2.5L service information, for example, describes controlling idle through the throttle plate itself.
If your engine uses that arrangement, see our throttle body replacement guide. An idle complaint does not automatically mean you need both parts.
What Owners Paid or Were Quoted
These US owner accounts on CarComplaints are older, but they show the difference between buying a part and paying a dealer. I have kept the dates with each price.
- In a complaint dated February 18, 2010, a Pennsylvania owner of a 2003 Explorer reported a $332 dealer quote for IAC replacement after repeated stalling.
- In a post published February 24, 2011, a California owner reported spending about $200 on a 2002 Acura TL’s IAC repair, with the owner’s spouse doing three hours of work.
- In a post published December 30, 2018, a Colorado owner of a 2002 F-150 reported a $450 dealer quote to diagnose and fix the idle. The owner instead spent $40 on parts and about two hours doing the repair.
What the Replacement Involves
The shop needs to reach the valve, disconnect its wiring and remove it from the intake. Access differs by engine, so a valve held by a few screws can still take time to reach.
HELLA’s fitting instructions call for a clean mounting surface and a replacement flange seal where needed. A poor seal lets air past the new valve, leaving you with another idle problem.
After fitting, the car may need its own idle relearn procedure. Walker Products directs technicians to the vehicle’s instructions because the reset is different between models.
Before collecting the car, have the shop check the original symptom again, including whether it happens cold, warm or with the AC running. That matters more than simply clearing the light.
Questions About IAC Valve Replacement
Is the idle air control valve the same as a sensor?
No. The valve changes airflow; a sensor measures something. You may see the part called an IAC motor, idle speed control valve or throttle air bypass valve in a catalog.
Can I drive with a bad IAC valve?
If the engine keeps stalling, stop driving and arrange repair. Walker Products advises against driving with a failing IAC motor because it can stall in stop-and-go traffic.
How long does an IAC valve last?
Walker Products gives no fixed lifespan. Replace it when testing finds a fault, rather than treating it as a part that must be changed at a set mileage.
Does a P0505 code mean I need a new valve?
No. Walker Products identifies P0505 as an idle air control system code, not proof that the valve itself has failed.
