How Much Does Chrome Dipping Rims Cost

Want that mirror shine on your wheels? Chrome dipping is how plating shops get it, but before you send your rims off, you will want to know what it costs, because the price changes a lot with the size of the wheel.

In this guide I will show you what real chrome shops charge per wheel, what pushes the price up, and how long you will be without your wheels.

What Is Chrome Dipping?

Chrome dipping is the everyday name for chrome plating. The shop strips your wheel down to bare metal, polishes it, and then dips it in a series of plating tanks.

WheelFlip, a wheel shop in California, explains that the usual “triple chrome” is really three different layers.

Copper goes on first to fill tiny marks, then nickel for strength and shine, and a thin layer of chromium on top for the hard mirror finish.

Think of it like painting a wall properly. The primer and the undercoat do most of the work, and the top coat is what you see. That is also why it takes time and costs more than a simple paint job.

How Much Does Chrome Dipping Rims Cost?

I checked the prices four chrome shops publish on their own websites. For a one-piece car wheel, here is what they charged on October 3, 2026:

So you are looking at about $250 to $750 per wheel, or about $1,000 to $3,000 for a set of four. The wide gap is partly the shop and partly the size and design of your wheel.

Bigger Wheels Cost More

A bigger wheel has more metal to strip, polish and plate. Here is how two of those shops price by size:

What Else Can Push the Price Up?

• The condition of the wheel. Cal Chrome charges from $75 a wheel to blast away corrosion before plating, and curb rash or bends need fixing first.
• Old chrome. A wheel that was chromed before has to be stripped first, which is why Cal Chrome’s rechrome starts at $350 instead of $250.
• The design. Lots of thin spokes and deep corners take longer to polish by hand.
• Multi-piece wheels. Atlas prices the lip, barrel and center separately, and adds $200 or more to take them apart and put them back together.
• Black chrome. Cal Chrome’s black chrome starts at $475 a wheel.

Also plan for the tires. The shops plate bare wheels, so a tire shop has to take the tires off before and fit and balance them again after.

How Long Does It Take?

This is the part people forget. Cal Chrome quotes 4 to 8 business weeks depending on the wheel and its workload, with a paid express option that cuts the time in half. Santa Ana Wheel quotes 3 to 4 weeks.

So if this is your daily car, you will need a spare set of wheels while yours are away.

Is Chrome Dipping Worth It?

If you love the look and your wheels are a good design worth keeping, yes. A proper triple chrome finish is hard and very shiny.

But if you drive through snow and salted roads, think twice. WheelFlip itself suggests a ceramic polished finish instead for those conditions, because road salt is hard on chrome.

And if your wheels are cheap to begin with, compare the plating price with a set of new chrome wheels before you decide. At $1,000 or more for four, plating is not always the cheaper choice.
