Short answer

Free reset and jam checks, horsepower prices, straight-swap labor, wiring changes and the dishwasher inlet plug that can block drainage.

You flip the disposal switch and hear a hum, or nothing at all. That does not always mean you need a new motor. A jam or a tripped overload can leave a usable disposal looking dead.

So what does replacement cost if it really has failed? Yarbrough & Sons publishes $550 to $1,950 installed in the Oklahoma City metro, from a basic 1/3 HP unit to its 1 HP chef-grade option.

I will show the free checks first, then separate the unit price from plumber labor and electrical changes. These US prices were checked October 18, 2026.

Try the Reset and Jam Checks First

Turn the switch off and disconnect power before clearing a jam. Never put your hand into the disposal. InSinkErator’s instructions use a wrench underneath and tongs to remove an obstruction.

On models with the bottom wrench socket, use the specified service wrench to work the mechanism back and forth until it turns freely. Remove the wrench before testing the unit.

The maker’s Evergrind E404 manual calls for cooling the motor for three to five minutes before gently pressing the red reset button. Follow your own model’s instructions; some newer controls use a different reset procedure.

If the reset will not hold, the motor stays stalled or a breaker trips again, stop testing and have the fault checked. A working motor with a slow sink drain also needs diagnosis before you buy another disposal.

What Different Horsepower Units Cost

Moen’s own store gives a useful comparison within its EX range. These are appliance prices, before tax, shipping or fitting.

Moen EX50C, 1/2 HPMoen web price$138.03
Moen EX75C, 3/4 HPMoen web price$165.83
Moen EX100C, 1 HPMoen web price$213.99

The EX models include a power cord and fit most existing three-bolt mounting assemblies. Ask the installer whether your existing mount is one of those compatible assemblies.

Use horsepower as one part of the choice. Compare the cabinet space, noise treatment, grinding features and warranty too. A bulkier unit can take away room you use for a bin or cleaning supplies.

A basic 1/3 HP replacement is also available in Yarbrough’s installed range. Its page does not give a bare-unit price, so I have kept that offer out of the Moen equipment table.

Plumber Labor for a Straight Swap

We Can Do It! Plumbing in Oakland publishes $450 in labor for disposal installation, including minor drain-pipe alterations such as nuts and washers. Its service list is labor-only pricing.

Using that labor with Moen’s half-horsepower unit gives $138.03 + $450 = $588.03. With the one-horsepower model, $213.99 + $450 = $663.99, before tax, shipping and any extra work.

Those are my cross-company sums, not a package either company promises. A plumber supplying the appliance may price the equipment, visit and warranty together.

For example, Yarbrough’s installed range includes removal, mounting work, reconnecting the drain and dishwasher hose, and a leak test. Its $550 starting offer already includes the disposal.

When comparing the two approaches, agree who handles a defective customer-supplied unit. The store’s product warranty and the installer’s workmanship warranty cover different parts of the purchase.

When Wiring or a Switch Adds Work

A corded replacement can use a suitable existing outlet. A hardwired connection, a failed switch or a first-time installation needs its own electrical assessment.

Have the electrician price the actual work: an outlet, wall switch, air-switch arrangement or circuit changes. Ask for electrical work to be priced separately from the plumbing labor.

An air switch on the countertop still controls an electrically powered appliance. It does not remove the need for a suitable supply and the protection required for the installation.

Also check the drain height if you have fitted a deeper sink. A disposal that fits inside the cabinet may still leave the outlet poorly positioned for the existing drain.

Do Not Miss the Dishwasher Inlet Plug

A new disposal’s dishwasher inlet can be sealed by a knockout plug. The InSinkErator manual requires removing it when a dishwasher is connected, and retrieving the loose plug from inside the disposal.

If no dishwasher connects there, the plug stays in place. Leaving it in a used inlet can block drainage; removing it from an unused inlet leaves an opening that should not be there.

Remove the knockout plug only when connecting a dishwasher hose; leave it in an unused inlet.

Have the installer test both appliances after reconnecting the hose. If you are also buying a dishwasher, the dishwasher replacement guide covers the separate hookup costs.

Leaks at the Mount Are Different From a Failed Body

Water under the sink can come from the sink flange, a drain joint, the dishwasher hose or the disposal body. Pinpointing the source matters before deciding which part to replace.

A leaking connection may need sealing or new hardware. A corroded, leaking body is a stronger reason to replace the appliance. If the cabinet has swollen too, keep that repair separate from the disposal bill.

A Homeowner Bill and Two Older Price Checks

These forum posts describe different purchases and shopping moments. The unit-only prices below did not buy a plumber’s installation.

  • On December 14, 2024, at 16:05, a DC Urban Moms poster reported $525 including the disposal, fitted by a licensed plumber. No model was given.
  • On August 22, 2008, mominthedubc described a Costco catalog offer of $99 including shipping for a Titan 1 1/4 HP unit. The post asked about buying it; it was not a purchase report.
  • On August 21, 2014, a Houzz shopper saw an InSinkErator Evolution 1 HP priced above $300 on Amazon and asked about alternatives. Installation was not included in that observation.

Questions About Disposal Replacement

How Do the Moen Warranties Compare?

Moen gives the EX50C a five-year limited warranty and the EX75C a ten-year limited warranty. Both include in-home service.
