Short answer

Single and double doors, steel and wood choices, plus the repair costs for springs, cables and individual panels.

A dented garage door can still move, while a good-looking door can be stuck by a broken spring. Before you pay for a whole replacement, find out whether the door sections are damaged or one moving part has failed.

So a two-car steel garage door replacement costs $1,300 to $3,000 in One Stop Garage Doors & Gates’ South Bay, California price table. That range includes standard and insulated doors, hardware, labor and haul-away.

I will show you single-door prices too, then compare a new door with spring, cable and panel repairs. Door size and construction matter more than the number of cars you park inside.

Single Versus Double Garage Doors

A double-width door spans one wide opening. Two separate single doors are two installations, so do not treat a two-car garage as a measurement.

One Stop publishes these installed South Bay ranges. The company includes the door, hardware, springs, fitting and removal of the old door:

Standard single steel doorOne Stop, uninsulated or lightly insulated$700 – $1,500
Insulated single steel doorOne Stop, two or three layers$1,000 – $2,600
Standard or insulated doubleOne Stop, two-car opening$1,300 – $3,000
Carriage-house styleOne Stop, steel or composite$1,200 – $3,800
Wood, fiberglass or compositeOne Stop, grouped material range$2,500 – $6,000+

These are local installed prices, not a promise for every US home. A taller opening, decorative glass or unusual finish can change the order.

Steel, Insulation and Wood

A basic steel door keeps the purchase simple. Adding insulation changes the construction: an insulated layer and an interior steel skin are different upgrades, so have the quote identify the model and number of layers.

For an attached garage, I would compare insulated options alongside the basic door.

Wood gives you a different finish and maintenance job. If the look is what you want, compare real wood with a wood-look steel or composite door before deciding how much upkeep you want.

One Stop groups wood, fiberglass and composite in one broad price range. It does not give a separate wood-only price for your opening, so that choice needs a model-specific quote.

When a Repair Is Enough

Direct Service Garage Doors in Central Arkansas publishes the following repair ranges. Its separate $85 trip charge applies to service calls; door estimates are free.

Torsion spring replacementDirect Service service table, plus trip charge$360 – $475
Cable repair or replacementDirect Service, plus trip charge$150 – $300
Off-track door repairDirect Service, plus trip charge$195 – $280
Replacement sectionDirect Service, plus trip charge$250 – $650 per panel

For cable work, Direct Service’s figures give $150 + $85 = $235 to $300 + $85 = $385 with the trip charge. Ask which parts and how many cables the on-site estimate covers.

A damaged section may be replaceable if the maker still supplies a matching one and the rest of the door is sound. With several damaged sections, compare the full repair bill with a complete door.

Springs and cables carry heavy loads. Stop using a door with a broken spring, loose cable or sections off the track, as Direct Service advises. Keep people clear and leave the loaded hardware to a garage-door technician.

If the problem is the motor unit rather than the door, use our garage door opener replacement guide for that separate job.

What Owners Paid and Were Quoted

The owners below describe different scopes and years. Their experiences are useful for comparing an installed job with buying a door yourself:

  • On September 12, 2022, a DC Urban Moms poster had two bids around $2,000 each for a new garage door and removal of the old one. The post does not give its size or material.
  • On May 12, 2026, PoorUB in Fargo, North Dakota, described an earlier 8-by-16-foot replacement on The Garage Journal, reply #5. The installed price fell from $1,100 to $970 after speaking with the owner, including haul-away.
  • In the same thread on May 12, 2026, Goose_NC in North Carolina paid $300 more for an installed workshop door than the buying-only prices they had found. Their opening post describes removal and a fit adjustment, but gives no total bill.

The last owner had limited lifting ability and valued having the heavy old door taken away. That is a useful comparison to make before choosing a product-only deal.

What to Keep in the Replacement Quote

Get the measured opening, model, finish and insulation in the quote, along with tracks, springs, fitting, old-door removal and a balance check.

Ask about damaged framing or trim before the new door arrives. Replacing the moving door is different from widening the opening or repairing the structure supporting it.

A parts warranty and an installation warranty cover different problems. Check who returns if the door rubs, will not stay balanced or needs an adjustment after fitting.

Garage Door Cost Questions

Is a double door twice the price of a single?

Not necessarily. One Stop’s installed table has standard single steel doors at $700 to $1,500 and standard or insulated doubles at $1,300 to $3,000. Two separate singles also require two sets of hardware and fitting work.

Where These Prices Come From
