You press the remote and the opener hums, clicks or does nothing. Replacing the motor unit may be the answer, but a failed remote, power problem or misaligned sensor can look like a much bigger fault.
So garage door opener replacement costs $350 to $800 installed at Ingenious Garage Door Services in the Houston area. Its range includes the opener, labor and hauling away the old unit.
I will compare chain, belt and wall-mount openers, show what the extras add, and explain what the fitting charge should cover.
Installed Prices by Opener Type
Ingenious prices chain-drive installations at $350 to $650 and belt-drive jobs at $430 to $800. Those are its Houston figures, so use them to understand the choices rather than as a national rate.
OnTrac Garage Doors publishes another set of installed ranges, including the wall-mount option:
Chain drive is the budget pick for a detached garage where noise is not a concern.
A wall-mount opener such as Genie’s 6172 frees the center of the ceiling.

What the Extras Add
OnTrac prices each add-on, such as battery backup, a camera, a keypad or Wi-Fi, at $25 to $250 depending on the model. Newer models often include app control, while an older one may need a $30 to $70 bridge.
I would choose the features you will use, then compare complete kits. Paying extra for a keypad makes little sense if the box you picked already includes one.
Labor, Rails and Safety Sensors
OnTrac puts labor for a straightforward swap at $150 to $300 within the installed price. Do not add that labor again to the installed ranges above.
The photo-eye sensors near the floor need to work with the new system too. Have the installer include their mounting, wiring and alignment, plus the travel and force setup.

A taller door can need a different rail or extension. OnTrac gives a $25 to $100 allowance for a heavy-duty rail for tall doors, depending on height. Match the opener kit to your actual door height before ordering.
If you need a new outlet or circuit near the opener, budget for a licensed electrician.
Before the installer leaves, have the remotes, wall control, sensors and reversal function demonstrated. Try the app and battery mode too if those were part of the purchase.
Make Sure the Door Itself Is Ready
A stronger motor does not repair a binding or unbalanced door. OnTrac warns that a heavy, poorly balanced door strains any opener, so budget for spring work first if the springs are worn.
For damaged sections, springs or cables, see the garage door replacement guide. Those repairs belong in a separate part of the estimate.
If the fault is limited to power, controls or sensor alignment, ask whether repair will restore normal operation. Ingenious notes that some apparently dead units have a tripped breaker or a remote that needs programming.
Older Owner Bills, With Dates
Owners on The Garage Journal described the following jobs in September 2019. These are historical bills, not current installation quotes:
- September 17, reply #10: The_Geologist in Baltimore County reported roughly $300 for a Chamberlain chain-drive opener installed about a year earlier. The work included removing the old opener and running new wires.
- September 18, reply #11: HenryAZ in Arizona paid around $400 for a LiftMaster belt-drive opener, installation and two extra remotes in a bay that had never had one. A ceiling outlet was already in place.
- September 18, reply #14: an owner in Michigan recalled about $140 for a Chamberlain chain-drive unit, paid with Menards rebates and self-installed. It had been working for about six years at the time of the post.
The outlet was ready in the second job, and the third owner supplied the labor. Those details are useful even though the prices are old: the installation conditions still need to be included in a fair comparison.
Before Agreeing to the Replacement
Ask for the model number, drive type, included controls, rail, sensors, removal and final setup in one written estimate. Ingenious includes old-unit haul-away; with anyone else, confirm disposal is on the quote.
If you use the buttons built into your car, check compatibility with that vehicle as well as with the handheld remotes. An adapter may be needed, and it is better to discover that before fitting day.
Keep the receipt and model details for future batteries, remotes and warranty claims. The replacement opener and its installation can have separate coverage.
Questions About Opener Replacement
Is belt drive worth paying more for?
It can be if noise matters in the room above or beside the garage. Belt drives are the quieter choice; compare the included features as well as the drive type.
Does Wi-Fi mean it works during a power cut?
No. Smart control and battery backup are different features. Check the model’s backup specification if operation during an outage is a priority.
Can the old sensors and rail stay?
Only if they are compatible with the new equipment and in suitable condition. Most new units include a matched rail and trolley, so ask before mixing old and new parts.
Can I get a wall-mount opener for any garage?
Do not order one solely because the ceiling is crowded. The installer needs to confirm the door, shaft, mounting space and electrical supply suit that model.
