Short answer

Fixing a drive shaft costs about $150 to $450 at a shop when it needs one or two new U-joints, and $400 to $1,200 or more for a whole new drive shaft. Tacoma owners paid $275 to $438 at driveline shops for three U-joints and a carrier bearing.

There is a clunk when you shift into drive, or a vibration through the floor that gets worse as you speed up on the highway. The shop puts the truck on a lift and points at the drive shaft.

Maybe it is a worn U-joint, or maybe they want to sell you a whole new shaft.

So how much does a drive shaft repair cost? About $150 to $450 to replace one or both U-joints at a shop, by an Orlando shop’s prices. A whole new drive shaft is $400 to $1,200 or more, fitted.

In this guide I will show you what each drive shaft repair costs, how long Toyota gives its dealers for the job, what the parts cost, and what Tacoma owners paid at dealers and at driveline shops.

Is It the Drive Shaft?

Irish Mike’s Total Car Care, a repair shop in Orlando, Florida, matches the symptoms to the part like this:

  • A clunk when you speed up or slow down: a worn U-joint or CV joint.
  • Vibration through the floor at highway speed: a U-joint, a drive shaft out of balance, or the center bearing.
  • Vibration in one speed range: a drive shaft that is out of balance or bent.
  • Squealing or grinding in 4WD: the front drive shaft or a joint at the transfer case.

Luxury Auto Works, a repair shop in Austin, Texas, adds a simple test. A vibration that rises with road speed, and not with engine speed, often points to the drive shaft or a U-joint.

Rust dust or grease weeping at the joint caps is another sign, the same shop writes.

What a Shop Charges

Here are the Orlando shop’s prices, from its page dated April 24, 2026:

One U-jointmore work on solid axle trucks$150 – $300
U-joints at both endsoften done together when one fails$250 – $450
Center support bearingon two-piece drive shafts$200 – $450
Balance the drive shaftfor vibration$100 – $250
Slip yokecommon on trucks$150 – $400
New drive shaft, rear or 4WDOEM or aftermarket makes the difference$400 – $1,200+

The Austin shop, which works mostly on European and luxury cars, prices one joint on a rear-drive sedan or SUV at $350 to $700, parts and labor. Two rear joints and a center bearing on a 4×4 are $650 to $1,100 there.

That shop gives 1 to 2 hours per joint when it is easy to reach, and puts its labor rate at $140 to $190 an hour.

How Long Toyota Gives Its Dealers

In 2017 Toyota started paying for worn drive shaft U-joints on some 2005 to 2011 Tacomas, and its bulletin gives the time it paid dealers for each job:

One U-joint, 4WD0.9 hour on a 2WD0.8 hour
Two U-joints, 4WD1.2 hours on a 2WD1.0 hour
Three U-joints, 4WD2.1 hours on a 2WD1.8 hours
Whole drive shaftswap the complete shaft0.5 hour

The coverage ran until April 30, 2019, and then for 12 years from the date each truck was first used. For a truck first sold in 2011, that ended in 2023.

Tekmetric, a company that makes software for repair shops, found the average US labor rate was $132 an hour in June 2026. So one U-joint at 0.8 hour is $105.60 in labor, and three U-joints at 1.8 hours are $237.60.

What the Parts Cost

Here are prices I checked on October 7, 2026, from ToyotaPartsDeal, a Toyota dealer’s parts website, and RockAuto, a parts website:

Aftermarket U-joint for a Tacoma, RockAutoMoog, GKN and Dana, in place of Toyota 04371-04030$8.70 – $17.20
Toyota U-joint kit, 2017 Tacomalist price $79.82 – $86.48$57.11 – $61.35
Toyota front drive shaft, 2017 Tacoma 4WDlist price $420.81 – $465.72$293.47 – $324.79
Dorman rear drive shaft, RockAutoin place of Toyota 37100-04410$642.79
Toyota rear drive shaft with center bearing, 2017 Tacomalist price $816.69 – $1,345.64$546.96 – $901.21

Now put them together. One Dana U-joint and 0.8 hour is $17.20 + $105.60 = $122.80. Three Toyota U-joint kits and 1.8 hours is $181.56 + $237.60 = $419.16.

A new Toyota rear drive shaft and 0.5 hour is $546.96 + $66 = $612.96, up to $901.21 + $66 = $967.21.

What Tacoma Owners Paid

Here is what owners on Tacoma World paid or were quoted, with links to their posts:

So three U-joints cost $275 at one driveline shop and $1,011.15 at a Toyota dealer. If a dealer wants to replace the whole shaft, ask a driveline shop first whether new U-joints and a balance will do.

Price bars: one Dana U-joint fitted, worked out, $122.80; one U-joint at an Orlando shop $150 to $300; both U-joints $250 to $450; new drive shaft $400 to $1,200; three U-joints at driveline shops $275 to $438; three U-joints at a Toyota dealer $1,011.15; new shaft, Toyota dealer quote $1,500
The Orlando shop’s prices, a worked-out price with Toyota’s job time, and what Tacoma owners paid or were quoted.

Is It Safe to Drive?

Not for long. The Orlando shop warns that a clunking U-joint will either fail on the highway or ruin the drive shaft if you wait.

The Austin shop says to stop driving if you hear a loud bang, feel a severe vibration, or see a joint cap that has worked out of its yoke. A failed U-joint can let the drive shaft drop, so have the car towed.
