If your car makes a clicking noise every time you turn, or you have found grease thrown around the inside of a front wheel, a CV axle may be on its way out.
And the first thing you probably want to know is what the repair will cost. The price range above is wide, I know, so in this guide I will show you where your own price falls in it.
I looked up real part prices for a popular car and worked out the labor at today’s shop rates. That way you can see where every dollar goes before you talk to a shop.
What Is a CV Axle?
A CV axle is the shaft that carries power from the transmission to a wheel. It has a joint at each end, so the wheel can steer and move over bumps and still get power.
Each joint is packed with grease and covered by a rubber boot. Think of the boot as a sealed sandwich bag around the joint. As long as it stays closed, the grease stays in and the dirt stays out.
Once the boot splits, the grease slowly gets out and dirt and water get in. That is when the joint starts to wear, and when you start to hear it.
How Much Does It Cost to Replace a CV Axle?
J.D. Power puts the cost of replacing one CV axle at $300 to $1,500, parts and labor together. The job usually takes 1.5 to 3 hours.
Where you land in that range comes down to two things: the part you pick, and how long the job takes on your car. Let me go through both.
Labor Cost
Most shops charge by the hour. Tekmetric, a company that makes software for repair shops, looked at data from more than 10,000 shops and found the average US labor rate is $132 an hour (June 2026).
So for 1.5 to 3 hours of work, you are looking at $198 to $396 in labor for one axle.
The state you live in matters too. Here is the same job at the average rate in the ten states with the most people:
These are averages, so a shop near you can be above or below them. Always go by the written quote.
Part Cost
The axle itself is where prices really spread out. To give you real numbers instead of guesses, I looked up the front axles for a 2012 to 2017 Toyota Camry with the 2.5-liter engine. These were the prices on October 3, 2026:
So for the same car, the part alone can cost about $100 or about $567. That gap is bigger than the gap in labor, which is why the part you choose makes the biggest difference to your bill.
Toyota’s own axles do sell below list price at online Toyota parts dealers. ToyotaPartsDeal shows $345.74 for the driver side and $362.10 for the passenger side, but both were marked unavailable when I checked.
One more thing. When the shop buys the part for you, it sets its own price for it, so ask them to show the part price on your quote.
Work out your price
Pick the axle and the time your shop quotes. Prices are for a 2012 to 2017 Toyota Camry 2.5L, checked October 3, 2026, with labor at $132 an hour (Tekmetric's US average).
For this Camry, one axle comes to about $298 with the cheapest part and a quick job. With Toyota’s own part at list price and a 3-hour job, it is about $963. Other vehicles and longer jobs are what take the range up to $1,500.
Do You Need to Replace Both Axles?
No. You only need to replace the axle that has gone bad.
If both of yours are worn, buying them as a pair can save you a little. 1A Auto sells the TRQ pair for this Camry at $219.95, against $222.90 for the two sides bought one by one.
But labor is charged for each axle, so doing both can take up to about 6 hours.
Signs Your CV Axle Is Going Bad
These are the four signs J.D. Power lists:
- A clicking or popping noise when you turn. Sometimes it is more of a clunk or a knock that gets louder over time.
- A vibration that gets worse as you speed up, or a ride that feels bouncy.
- An axle that wobbles. With the car up on a lift, a mechanic can grab the axle at each joint and shake it. If it moves, it is failing.
- Grease thrown around the inside of the wheel, on the tire, under the car or around the joints.
Can You Drive With a Bad CV Axle?
I would not drive on it for long. Once the axle starts to shake, J.D. Power warns it may be close to breaking.
A broken axle can hit the parts around it, like the suspension, the exhaust, the struts and the brake lines. Then a repair that started at a few hundred dollars gets a lot bigger.
So if you hear the clicking, book the car in soon rather than wait for it to get worse.
How to Pay Less for a CV Axle Replacement
Here is what I would do before saying yes to a quote:
- Ask the shop if they can fit an aftermarket axle. On the Camry above, it costs about a fifth of Toyota’s list price.
- Check the warranty on the part and on the work. Detroit Axle, for example, gives a 10-year warranty on its axle.
- Get quotes from two or three shops. As you saw in the state table, hourly rates are not the same everywhere.
- Have the rubber boots checked when your car is in for an oil change. If only a boot is torn and the joint is still quiet, ask the shop to price a new boot as well as a new axle.
You can also do the job yourself if you are handy with tools. 1A Auto has a free video of the job on this Camry, and then you only pay for the part.
But if you have never worked on a car before, I would leave this one to a shop.
