Irish Mike's describes $3,000 to $5,000 for a head gasket failure that progresses through overheating to cylinder head replacement. This is one shop's repair scenario, not a national range or maximum. Machine work on a removed head costs less; owner quotes below reach $6,700 before extras. Checked October 17, 2026.

Short answer

Resurfacing, head rebuilding and full replacement prices, with three US owner quotes and Mazda's turbo cylinder head warranty extension.

The shop calls after your car overheats and tells you the cylinder head is warped or cracked. Now you are looking at a much bigger bill than a coolant leak, and wondering whether the head can be saved.

So how much does cylinder head repair cost? Irish Mike’s in Orlando describes $3,000 to $5,000 for a head gasket failure left to overheat until it needs cylinder head replacement.

Machining a head already off the engine costs much less. Resurfacing alone is $65 per head at Enoch Motorsports in Utah and $150 for a standard single head at Allied Industrial Machine Services in Virginia.

I will show you what those machine shop prices include, why replacement costs more, and what owners were quoted. The first thing to settle is which part the shop actually means.

The Head, Head Gasket and Valve Cover Are Different Jobs

The cylinder head is the metal casting above the engine’s cylinders. The head gasket seals it to the block. A valve cover sits above the head and keeps oil around the moving parts inside.

Separated engine layers: valve cover at the top, cylinder head casting below, thin head gasket and engine block underneath.
The cover, head and head gasket are separate parts. Simplified drawing, not to scale. Diagram: CostCheckr, CC0 1.0.

A leaking valve cover gasket does not by itself mean the cylinder head is cracked. If your estimate says “cylinder head cover”, have the shop explain whether it means that upper cover.

Likewise, a failed head gasket does not automatically mean you need a new head. For the gasket job on a Subaru, I have a separate Subaru head gasket cost guide.

What a Machine Shop Charges

These prices are for work on a head brought to the machine shop. Your mechanic’s work to remove it from the car and fit it again is separate.

Resurface one headEnoch Motorsports, Enoch, Utah$65
Pressure test a head for cracksEnoch Motorsports$65
Resurface a standard single headAllied Industrial Machine Services, Falls Church, Virginia; light cleaning included$150
Single head tune-upAllied; labor only, parts extra; cleaning, inspection, resurfacing, valve stem seal replacement and valve seat vacuum testing$400
Four-cylinder head rebuildAllied; labor only, parts extra$550 to $700
V6 head rebuild, pairAllied; labor only, parts extra$800 to $1,000
V8 head rebuild, pairAllied; labor only, parts extra$850 to $1,100

At Enoch, a pressure test plus resurfacing comes to $65 + $65 = $130. That is a sum of two services on its price list, before any other work the head needs.

Allied’s full rebuild includes cleaning, resurfacing, a valve job and checks for cracks, damaged valves and guide wear. Replacement parts cost extra, and some Subaru heads have a separate price.

Through a repair shop, the machining allowance can be higher. Luxury Auto Works in Austin publishes $200 to $600 per head for pressure testing and resurfacing during a head gasket job.

So ask what is included before comparing a resurfacing price with a rebuild. A skim of the gasket face and a head rebuilt with valve work are quite different purchases.

Can a Warped or Cracked Head Be Repaired?

A warped head needs measuring before cutting. Fel-Pro explains that both flatness and surface finish matter to the new gasket’s seal. A shiny surface alone does not tell you whether the head is ready to go back on.

For cracks, Terrill’s Aluminum Cylinder Heads in Chico, California, pressure tests the casting before machining. The shop offers aluminum head welding and cast iron crack repair, so replacement is not the only possible route.

I would let the machinist judge whether your particular casting is worth saving. Ask the machinist to explain the test results and whether the head can be repaired within the engine maker’s limits.

If the engine has also suffered damaged bearings or scored cylinders, fixing only the head may leave you with another big problem. Luxury Auto Works recommends considering an engine replacement when overheating has caused that wider damage.

Why Replacing the Head Costs Thousands

The replacement head is only one part of the job. Intake and exhaust parts, timing components and seals may have to come off before the mechanic can reach it.

Mazda’s CSP11 paperwork gives a useful example. Its coolant leak check and head replacement allow 10.9 hours on a Mazda6 2.5 turbo and 11.1 hours on an AWD CX-5 2.5 turbo.

Those are Mazda’s warranty labor allowances, with wheel alignment listed separately. The parts list also includes several gasket kits, an intake hose, fasteners and fluids.

For a cracked head found during gasket work, Irish Mike’s adds $500 to $2,000 for head replacement. That is an addition to the gasket repair, not the complete fitted price.

Before you agree, get one written estimate showing the head, removal and fitting, gaskets, bolts, fluids, machining and tax. Have the shop separate necessary repairs from optional work while the engine is apart.

The cooling fault matters too. If a failed pump, radiator or thermostat caused the overheating, the head repair needs to address that cause. Otherwise, the repaired engine can overheat again.

What Owners Paid or Were Quoted

These three US owners shared replacement quotes on CarComplaints. I have kept the dates and the extras with each price:

That last estimate is above the Orlando example at the start. The engine, damage and repair scope matter more than trying to make every cylinder head job fit one price range.

A Mazda Warranty Extension Worth Checking

Mazda’s CSP11 extends coverage for a specific cylinder head coolant leak on certain 2019 to 2020 CX-5, 2016 to 2020 CX-9 and 2018 to 2020 Mazda6 vehicles with the 2.5 turbo engine.

The limit is 10 years or 120,000 miles from the original warranty start date, whichever comes first. It covers the specified leak around the exhaust manifold, not every cylinder head fault or non-turbo engine.

Ask a Mazda dealer to check your VIN for CSP11 before paying. The program also allows reimbursement for eligible earlier repairs paid by owners, with instructions in the owner letter.

Cylinder Head Repair Questions You Might Have

Does a V6 or V8 need both cylinder heads replaced?

Not automatically. Allied prices single heads and pairs separately. Ask which head failed testing and whether the other one has damage before approving work on both.

How long will the car be in the shop?

Luxury Auto Works gives two to five business days for head gasket jobs, depending on parts and machine shop availability. A head that needs replacement or extra repair can keep the car there longer.

Can I keep driving if the head might be cracked?

If the engine is overheating, pull over safely and shut it off. Irish Mike’s advises against continuing to drive with overheating or white exhaust smoke because further engine damage can follow.

Is cylinder head repair worth it on an older car?

I would look at the condition of the whole car and the rest of the engine. A sound car with damage limited to the head is a different decision from one also needing a transmission or major engine repairs.
