Your clutch pedal went soft, sank to the floor or stayed down, and the car would not go into gear. On a hydraulic clutch that points to the slave cylinder, the master cylinder or the fluid between them.
So how much does it cost to replace a clutch slave cylinder? It depends on where it sits. A Jeep Wrangler owner paid a dealer $280 for one bolted to the outside of the gearbox, with 1.1 hours of work.
When the slave cylinder sits inside, around the gearbox’s input shaft, the gearbox has to come out. Owners then paid $1,125 to $5,600.
For the master cylinder, Toyota’s own parts and time on a 2019 to 2023 Tacoma come to $568.69, with a new pedal and hose.
In this guide I will show you why the two kinds cost so differently, what owners and shops paid, and a fluid change Nissan tries before any new parts.
Outside or Inside: Why the Price Jumps
On many cars the slave cylinder bolts to the outside of the gearbox and pushes a fork. On a Wrangler JK it is two bolts and a line with a clip, one owner on the Wrangler Forum explains.

Other cars use a concentric slave cylinder, a ring around the input shaft with the release bearing built in. It sits inside the bell housing, so the gearbox has to come out to reach it.
That is the same work as a clutch job. Here are the clutch prices at Luxury Auto Works, a repair shop in Austin:
The shop’s clutch labor runs 5 to 8 hours on compact front drive cars, 7 to 12 hours on mid-size and luxury cars, and 10 to 16 hours or more on all wheel drive and performance models.
Inside slave cylinders are commonly replaced while the gearbox is out. Ask whether the quote covers the release bearing, the flywheel and the rear main seal too.
A leaking inside slave can also soak the clutch in fluid. A 2008 Hyundai Sonata owner’s bill came to $1,950 with a new clutch, filed in January 2012.
A 2008 Jeep Patriot needed a new clutch and slave cylinder for $1,338.56, filed in June 2012.
GM’s fix for 2016 to 2018 Cruze clutch pedals that stay down replaces the slave cylinder with its fluid line. Debris from a damper in the line blocks a small hole inside.
So GM swaps the line, elbow, sleeve and slave cylinder as one kit, $189.91 at a dealer parts website.
Clutch Master Cylinder Replacement Cost
Toyota found that the clutch pedal on Tacoma pickups with a manual gearbox can squeak or creak. Its fix replaces the pedal, the clutch master cylinder and the reservoir hose, and it pays its dealers 1.2 hours.
Here are Toyota’s parts for a 2019 to 2023 Tacoma from a dealer parts website, checked October 13, 2026, with $132 an hour, Tekmetric’s US average from June 2026:
So the job comes to $568.69. Toyota covers it under its basic warranty for 3 years or 36,000 miles.
On some cars the master cylinder takes longer. GM paid 2.7 hours on 2005 to 2013 Corvettes with the LS2 or LS3 engine and 3.4 hours with the LS7 or LS9, which is $356.40 and $448.80 at $132 an hour.
Subaru warns that a leaking master cylinder on a 2015 to 2020 WRX can be the result of a worn clutch or a binding pedal or release lever. Its repair can include the whole clutch.
Subaru pays 4.9 hours for that, or 5.9 hours with a new pedal assembly, plus 0.3 hour to bleed it. That is $686.40 to $818.40 in labor alone.
Try the Fluid First
Nissan told its dealers what to do when the clutch pedal on a 2009 to 2013 370Z stays on the floor and nothing leaks. The fix is a full flush of the clutch fluid with a special brake fluid, not new parts.
Nissan pays 0.9 hour and up to $28.00 for the fluid, which comes to $146.80 at $132 an hour. One 370Z owner below paid $1,125 plus tax for a new slave cylinder, so the flush is worth trying first when nothing leaks.
Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator owners with a manual gearbox should check for open recalls first.
Recall 20V-124 bleeds the clutch hydraulics on 2018 to 2020 Wrangler and 2020 Gladiator models, and replaces the clutch and slave cylinder if they fail a test.
Recall 23V-116 replaces the clutch on some 2018 to 2020 and 2023 models. Both are free at a Jeep dealer.
What Owners Paid
Here is what owners paid or were quoted, on car forums and in complaints to NHTSA, the US road safety agency, with a link to each:
- A dealer quoted $450 for the outside slave cylinder on a 2012 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited, then charged $280 for parts and 1.1 hours of labor, on the Wrangler Forum in July 2016.
- A Toyota dealer replaced the master and slave cylinders on a 1997 Tacoma for $600 out the door, $185 for the slave and $415 for the master, on Tacoma World in October 2022.
- A new slave cylinder on a 2010 Nissan 370Z cost $1,125 plus tax, $325 for an improved aftermarket part and $800 for labor, filed in June 2015.
- A failed slave cylinder on a 2017 Chevrolet Cruze was being repaired for $1,500, filed in June 2024.
- Two shops quoted $3,900 and $6,600 for a failed seal on the slave cylinder inside the gearbox of a 2021 Toyota Corolla, filed in February 2026.
- The inside slave cylinder of another 2021 Corolla failed at 38,000 miles, and with the gearbox out the repair came to $5,600, filed in February 2026.
So owners paid $280 to $600 when the cylinders sat outside, and $1,125 to $5,600 when the slave sat inside, with one quote at $6,600.

Signs of a Failing Slave or Master Cylinder
The Austin shop lists the signs: low or dark fluid, a soft or sinking pedal, a take up point that moves higher or lower, and leaks near the master or slave cylinder.
Old brake fluid in the clutch soaks up moisture and can give a low, uneven pedal in summer traffic. When the pedal stays on the floor, owners could not shift or take the car out of gear, so have it towed.
Make sure the shop checks the release bearing and fork too. One Wrangler owner found that a bad bearing had seized the fork, and fluid pushed out past a slave cylinder that was fine.
Answers to Questions Asked a Lot
How much does it cost to replace a clutch slave cylinder?
An outside slave cylinder cost a Jeep Wrangler owner $280 at a dealer for 1.1 hours of work. An inside one needs the gearbox out, and owners paid $1,125 to $5,600.
How much does it cost to replace a clutch master cylinder?
With Toyota’s parts and time, a Tacoma master cylinder with the new pedal and hose comes to $568.69. A Toyota dealer replaced the master and slave cylinders on a 1997 Tacoma for $600.
Should I replace the clutch with an inside slave cylinder?
The gearbox is already out, so the Austin shop commonly replaces them together. Fluid from a leaking slave can also soak the clutch, as two owners found on a Hyundai Sonata and a Jeep Patriot.
Why does my clutch pedal stay on the floor?
A failed slave or master cylinder, a leak, air or old fluid. On some 370Z models Nissan flushes the fluid first, and on the 2016 to 2018 Cruze GM replaces the line and slave cylinder as a kit.
Can I drive with a bad clutch slave cylinder?
Not safely. Owners lost the pedal and could not shift or get out of gear, so have the car towed if the pedal stays down.
