You just bought a car you love, or yours has started to look dull, and a detailer has offered you a ceramic coating. Then the quote came in, and now you are wondering if that is a fair price.
So how much does ceramic coating cost? At the detailers I checked, a professional coating costs about $600 to $2,500, depending on how many years it lasts and how big your car is.
In this guide I will show you what four detailers charge, why the price moves so much, what a do-it-yourself kit costs, and what owners actually paid.
If you want ordinary cleaning first, my car detailing cost guide compares interior and exterior packages. A full detail and a ceramic coating cover different work.
What Detailers Charge for Ceramic Coating
Most detailers only quote after seeing the car. These four publish their prices, so here is what they charge:
So for an ordinary sedan, a good coating starts at about $600. The top of the range is for coatings built to last many years, and for bigger cars.

Why the Price Moves So Much
The biggest thing is how long the coating is made to last. Dennis Auto Details sells three tiers, and you can see the price climb with the years:
The coating on its own is cheaper. Dennis prices it from $299 for 2 years, $699 for 5 years and $1,299 to $1,799 for 9 years, with any paint correction priced on top.
The size of your car is the next thing. Rangel Auto Detailing gives these ranges for a 5-year coating:
The third thing is the work under the coating. A coating locks in whatever your paint looks like that day, swirls included, so most shops polish the paint first.

At Wash Doc, a sedan with a 1-step polish and a 1-year coating starts at $600, while the 5-year coating takes it to $1,200. If your paint has swirl marks, read my guide on paint correction cost before you book.
Doing It Yourself
You can coat your own car, and the kits are cheap. At Adam’s Polishes, a graphene ceramic spray kit costs $62.99 and is made to last up to 2 years.
The same brand’s full Graphene Ceramic Coating costs $119.99, and Adam’s claims 7 years or more of protection for it.
Owners on car forums have done it too. A Model Y owner put on two coats of Avalon King ceramic, with the prep spray and a booster, for under $100 in total.
A year and more than 40 car washes later, they wrote in April 2023, it was still holding up well. The catch is the time. Washing, claying and polishing a car properly takes a full weekend.
What Owners Paid, From Car Forums
Price lists are one thing, but I always like to see what real owners paid. Here is what people posted on the F150gen14 and Tesla Motors Club forums:
- An F-150 owner paid $2,200 for a coating with the wheels and brake calipers done too, and a 6-year warranty, in June 2024. The shop still recommends a fresh coat every 2 years.
- A new F-150 owner in New Jersey was getting quotes of around $1,000 with the glass and rims included, in the same thread.
- A Model Y owner was quoted $1,300 for the exterior, wheels included, in March 2023. They felt it was a good price after calling other shops.
Look at that first one. A “6-year” coating that the shop still wants to refresh every 2 years shows why you should read the warranty terms before you pay.
Is Ceramic Coating Worth It?
A coating makes the car easier to wash and keeps it glossy, but it is not armor. As one Model Y owner put it on Tesla Motors Club, it will not protect the paint from rock chips the way paint protection film does.
That film costs far more. The same owner paid about $6,000 for full film on a 2022 Model Y, as they wrote in May 2024.
If you keep your car for years and wash it often, I think a 2- to 5-year coating is money well spent. If you plan to sell soon, a $62.99 spray kit gives you most of the shine for a fraction of the price.
Answers to the Questions Asked a Lot
How much does ceramic coating cost for a car?
About $600 to $1,350 for a sedan at the detailers in this guide, and up to $2,500 or more for multi-layer coatings.
How much is ceramic coating for a truck or SUV?
Rangel Auto Detailing charges $1,500 to $1,800 for a 5-year coating on a standard SUV or truck, and $1,750 to $2,000 on an XL SUV or truck.
How long does ceramic coating last?
It depends on the product. Dennis Auto Details sells 2-, 5- and 9-year coatings, and Adam’s Polishes rates its spray kit at up to 2 years.
Can I ceramic coat my car myself?
Yes. A spray kit costs $62.99 and a full coating $119.99 at Adam’s Polishes, but you have to wash, clay and polish the car first.
Is ceramic coating the same as paint protection film?
No. A coating adds gloss and makes washing easier. Film is a thick layer that stops rock chips, and it costs much more, about $6,000 for one Model Y owner.
