The carpet sample you picked looks affordable until the estimate adds padding, fitting and removal. To work out what the room will really cost, start with the installed price and the area the store plans to charge for.
So carpet installation with carpet and pad is $3 to $10 per square foot on Cavalieri Flooring’s Orlando menu, depending on the style. Standard plush or textured carpet is $3 to $6; designer patterns reach the higher end.
I will break down the room-size math, stairs and extra work, then compare the store prices with quotes homeowners shared.
What Is Included in the Installed Price?
Cavalieri Flooring includes carpet, pad, labor, moving standard furniture, removing old carpet, disposal and cleanup. Standard doorway transitions are included too.
For another local comparison, Potomac Floors advertises $3.25 per square foot across Northern Virginia, DC and Maryland, including material, padding, installation and old carpet removal.
Those offers cover specified products and work. Choose the carpet you actually want before treating a low advertised rate as your final room price.
How Much to Carpet a Bedroom or Whole Floor?
The calculations below use Cavalieri’s $3 to $6 standard plush rate. These examples use the carpet quantity you pay for, which may be larger than your room’s floor area.
A rectangular 12-by-12-foot bedroom has 12 x 12 = 144 square feet of floor. Closets, doorways and the cutting layout still need to be included in the measurement.
Be careful with square yards too. One square yard is 9 square feet, so a price per square yard cannot be compared directly with a price per square foot.
Why the Store May Measure More Than Your Floor
Carpet One’s customer policy describes approximately 10% material overage for cutting, seaming and trimming. Its installation charges use the material needed, rather than only the covered floor area.
Using that policy as an illustration, 144 x 1.10 = 158.4 square feet of material. At the Orlando shop’s rates, 158.4 x $3 = $475.20 to 158.4 x $6 = $950.40.
That combines one retailer’s allowance with another shop’s rates to explain the math. Ask your own installer for a seam plan and measured quantity; do not add another allowance if the quote already includes it.

Padding, Stairs and the Floor Underneath
Flooring America separates a carpet project into carpet, cushion, labor and trim. Its guide also identifies subfloor condition and installation complexity as cost factors.
A soft carpet does not hide a damaged floor. If the room has water damage or loose sections, price the subfloor work before covering it.
For padding beyond its standard included option, Cavalieri advertises a $0.50 to $1.50 per-square-foot upgrade. Keep that separate from a quote that already includes the pad you chose.
Stairs need their own count. At Cavalieri’s published rate, an example 13-step run is 13 x $25 = $325 to 13 x $45 = $585, before any landing priced separately.
Ask how the carpet will finish at the edges and meet adjoining floors. Pattern alignment, unusual steps and a landing can make a stair quote different from a simple bedroom installation.

What Homeowners Were Quoted for Carpet
Three DC Urban Moms discussions give useful comparisons, with the original dates below. The runner example involves a different product from ordinary wall-to-wall bedroom carpet.
- On January 18, 2024, one poster described a $2,200 quote for 400 square feet of Shaw carpet. The total included a $500 base installation charge.
- On November 17, 2021, a homeowner comparing a wool hallway and stair runner received about $4,300 from a Bethesda store and $3,400 from a Rockville store for the same carpet.
- On May 31, 2025, a townhome buyer reported an $11,000 Luna quote for the carpet portion of planned flooring work. The post does not give the carpeted area.
The first quote works out to $2,200 / 400 = $5.50 per square foot. I would not divide the townhome quote by the home’s whole area, because the owner only wanted bedroom carpets replaced.
Getting a Quote You Can Compare
Write the carpet style and color, padding specification and measured quantity on each estimate. Then check removal, furniture, transitions, stairs, delivery and tax.
If the store offers free installation, compare the complete bill for the same carpet and pad. The installation line alone cannot tell you which package costs less.
If you find usable wood beneath old carpet, refinishing the floor is another option to price before ordering the new covering.
Questions About Carpet Installation Prices
How much is carpet for a 12-by-12 room?
Using Cavalieri’s standard rate, 144 x $3 = $432 to 144 x $6 = $864. Cutting allowance and the final measured quantity can change that total.
Does carpet installation include padding?
Both shops priced here include padding in their advertised packages.
How much does it cost to carpet stairs?
Cavalieri advertises $25 to $45 per step. A calculated 13-step example is $325 to $585, with a landing checked separately.
Is removing old carpet always an extra charge?
Cavalieri and Potomac include old carpet removal in the prices used here. That does not establish the policy at another store or the cost of removing a different flooring material.
