Your brakes squeal, the shop says the pads are down to a few millimeters, or a brake service message came on. Before you agree to pads, rotors or both, here is what a brake job costs and when you can skip the rotors.

So how much does brake pad replacement cost? At Luxury Auto Works, a repair shop in Austin, new front pads are $200 to $350 and rear pads $180 to $325, with the labor.

With new rotors as well, the front axle is $450 to $850 there. Owners told NHTSA, the US road safety agency, they paid or were quoted $380 to $1,000 at dealers and shops since 2024, most of them for pads with rotors.

In this guide I will show you what shops charge, what owners paid, what the carmakers’ own pads and job times come to, the recalls and bulletins that pay for brakes, and the signs that pads are worn out.

What a Repair Shop Charges

Here is Luxury Auto Works’ price list for one axle, from February 2026:

Front pads onlyparts and labor$200–$350
Front pads and rotorsparts and labor$450–$850
Rear pads onlyparts and labor$180–$325
Rear pads and rotorsparts and labor$400–$750

On its rotor page the same shop charges $300 to $600 per axle for rotors and pads on mainstream cars, and $600 to $1,200 or more on luxury and performance imports with large rotors and wear sensors.

In Austin traffic, front pads often last 25,000 to 45,000 miles and rear pads 35,000 to 60,000, by the shop’s count. It suggests new pads when the friction material is down to about 3 to 4 mm.

What Owners Paid

Here is what owners told NHTSA they paid or were quoted, with a link to each complaint:

  • New front brakes and rotors on a 2024 GMC Acadia cost $380, filed in November 2025.
  • A Chevrolet dealer wanted over $420 to turn the front rotors and replace the pads of a 2024 Colorado at 17,000 miles, filed in December 2025.
  • Rear pads and rotors on a 2021 Volkswagen Jetta at 28,871 miles cost $522 after a discount, filed in March 2024.
  • A Volkswagen dealer replaced the brake pads of a 2022 Atlas for $700, filed in November 2024.
  • Front pads and rotors on a 2021 Ford Bronco Sport at about 28,833 miles cost the owner $747, filed in May 2026.
  • An Acura dealer put new front rotors and ceramic pads for a 2022 RDX at 22,000 miles at about $1,000, filed in January 2025.

So owners paid or were quoted $380 to $1,000 for pads, most of them with rotors. Pads alone sit at the low end, and dealers sit at the high end.

Price bars per axle: GM crossover front pads worked out $280.62; CX-5 rear pads and rotors worked out $352.90; CX-5 front pads and rotors worked out $437.06; front pads only at an Austin shop $200 to $350; rear pads only $180 to $325; front pads and rotors $450 to $850; 2024 Acadia front brakes and rotors $380; 2024 Colorado, dealer wanted over $420; 2021 Jetta rear pads and rotors $522; 2021 Bronco Sport front pads and rotors $747; 2022 RDX front at Acura about $1,000

What the Carmakers’ Pads and Times Come To

GM found that the front pads of 2020 to 2023 Enclave and Traverse, 2021 to 2023 Acadia, Blazer and XT5 and some other models can groan on the first stops after a night parked.

Its fix is new front pads with the rotors scuffed, and GM pays 1.1 hours on most of them.

With GM’s pad kit on a dealer parts website, checked October 13, 2026, and $132 an hour, Tekmetric’s US average from June 2026:

Front pad kit85619135, replaces 85520396$135.42
Labor, 1.1 hoursGM’s time, pads and rotor scuff$145.20

So front pads on these GM crossovers come to $280.62, inside the Austin shop’s range for pads only.

Mazda’s bulletin for brake noise on the 2013 to 2025 CX-5 replaces the pads and rotors and pays 0.5 hour for both front wheels.

Its front pads are $139.80, the shims $43.78 and two rotors $187.48, so $371.06 in parts and $437.06 in all on a 2021 to 2024 CX-5 2.5.

For the rear Mazda pays 0.6 hour. Its rear pads are $120.44 and two rotors $153.26, so the rear axle comes to $352.90.

Recalls and Bulletins That Pay for Brakes

Ford recalled 114,666 2021 and 2022 Bronco Sport and Escape models because brake linings may have been made wrong and the car can take longer to stop. Dealers replace the front brake pads free under recall 21C31.

A bulletin can help even after the warranty. The owner of a 2022 Mazda CX-5 showed the dealer Mazda’s brake bulletin and complained.

After measuring the rotors below their minimum, the dealer replaced all four rotors and pads as goodwill, filed in January 2026.

If your car is still under its basic warranty, GM’s and Mazda’s noise bulletins are covered by it. Ask the dealer to check for a bulletin before you pay for a brake noise.

Do You Need New Rotors Too?

Not always. The Austin shop measures each rotor and compares it with the carmaker’s minimum thickness, which is stamped on the rotor or listed in the factory data. A rotor above that line can often be kept.

Mazda’s bulletin gives the CX-5’s numbers: a front rotor under 27.6 mm is replaced, and one that drops under 26.8 mm after machining is replaced too. Ask the shop for the measurement before you pay for new rotors.

Signs Your Brake Pads Are Worn

Squealing often means the wear indicator is touching the rotor, a built in warning on many cars.

Grinding means the pad material is gone and the metal backing plate is on the rotor, and the rotors can be damaged quickly, the Austin shop warns.

A pulsing pedal or a shaking steering wheel when you brake points to uneven rotors. Longer stopping distances are a safety warning, so have the brakes checked the same week.

How much do brake pads and rotors cost?

Owners paid or were quoted $380 to $1,000 at dealers and shops since 2024. With Mazda’s own parts and time, front pads and rotors on a 2021 to 2024 CX-5 come to $437.06.

How long does it take to replace brake pads?

GM pays its dealers 1.1 hours for front pads with the rotors scuffed on most of its crossovers, and Mazda 0.5 hour for front pads and rotors on the CX-5.
