Your back window shattered, maybe with nobody near the car, or the rear glass of your truck leaks or has a cracked frame. You want to know what a new one costs, and whether your insurance or the carmaker should pay.
So how much does back window replacement cost? About $200 to $550 for most cars, SUVs and trucks at an auto glass shop, by the price table of NuVision Auto Glass. Luxury cars run $500 to $800.
Owners paid or were quoted $441.76 to $1,653.66 since 2022, and the dealer bills were the higher ones. A truck’s sliding back window comes to about $992 to $1,236 with Ram’s own glass and job time.
In this guide I will show you what glass shops charge, what a truck’s sliding window costs, which models the carmakers have a fix for, what insurance covers, and what owners paid.
What a Glass Shop Charges
NuVision Auto Glass, which works in Arizona, Florida and other states, prices back glass by the kind of vehicle on its page updated in September 2026:
Glass with defroster lines adds $75 to $150, and the carmaker’s own glass costs $100 to $250 more than aftermarket glass there.
Two other shops land in the same place. Glow Auto Glass in Glen Burnie, Maryland, puts most back glass at $280 to $500, and Collision Auto Glass in Portland, Oregon, at $300 to $700.
What a Truck’s Sliding Back Window Costs
Pickup windows that slide open cost more, and the carmakers sell them as one assembly with the frame. Here are their own parts on dealer parts websites, checked October 9, 2026:
Ram pays its dealers 2.4 hours to replace the sliding back glass of a 2019 to 2021 Ram 1500, with two adhesive kits at $74.34 each.
At $132 an hour, the average US shop rate Tekmetric found in June 2026, that comes to $526.38 + $148.68 + $316.80 = $991.86, or $1,236.14 with the dearest glass.
Ask the Carmaker Before You Pay
Ram extended the warranty on the back glass of select 2019 to 2021 Ram 1500 pickups to 8 years or 150,000 miles, for a water leak at the top of the glass or a cracked glass frame.

It covers trucks built through September 30, 2020 with a sliding back window. Owners who already paid for the repair can ask for their money back, and since June 2024 the fix is a urethane seal, 0.4 hour, instead of new glass.
Acura’s bulletin 22-014 covers rear glass that shatters with no impact on all 2019 RDX and many 2020 RDX, and points to the rear defroster grid. Acura pays its dealers 1.5 hours to replace it, but only the normal warranty applies.

Out of warranty, Acura dealers quoted RDX owners $1,107 and $1,200. Another owner got Acura to pay half, leaving almost $400.
GM’s program N192265660 fixed a rear defroster circuit that could overheat on the power sliding back window of 2014 to 2019 Silverado and Sierra pickups, and replaced glass it damaged. It ended on January 31, 2022.
Honda told the owner of a 2023 HR-V, whose back glass shattered in a parking lot, that it would cover the $441.76 repair. So whatever you drive, ask the dealer if your model has a bulletin before you pay.
What Insurance Covers
Back glass falls under comprehensive coverage, minus your deductible. In Kentucky and South Carolina, the law takes the deductible away for car glass, so a covered back window costs you nothing there.
Florida’s law does that only for the windshield, so a Florida back window still carries your deductible. With a $500 deductible, a $300 sedan back glass is cheaper to pay yourself.
What Owners Paid
Here is what owners told NHTSA, the US road safety agency, and a Tesla forum, with a link to each:
- A 2023 Honda HR-V got new back glass from AutoGlass Now for $441.76, with a $100 insurance deductible, filed in August 2026.
- The owner of a 2020 Acura RDX whose back glass shattered overnight was told the repair would cost $627, filed in December 2025.
- A Tesla Motors Club member paid $673 plus tax for a cracked Tesla back window in May 2023.
- When the back glass of a 2017 Silverado exploded on the road, a local glass shop priced the repair at $948, filed in February 2026.
- A GMC dealer estimated $1,100 to replace the leaking power back window of a 2021 Sierra, filed in July 2025.
- Tesla Service quoted $1,200 for a 2022 Model Y back window shattered by a branch in February 2022.
- A Honda dealer put the repair of a 2018 HR-V’s broken back glass at $1,653.66 plus tax, filed in August 2026.
So owners paid or were quoted $441.76 to $1,653.66 since 2022. The dealer bills and quotes were all $1,100 or more.

Back Window Questions You Might Have
How much does it cost to replace a back window?
About $200 to $550 for most cars, SUVs and trucks at NuVision Auto Glass, and $500 to $800 on luxury cars. Owners paid or were quoted $441.76 to $1,653.66 since 2022.
Does insurance cover a broken back window?
Comprehensive coverage does, minus your deductible. Kentucky and South Carolina law takes the deductible away for car glass, and Florida’s only for the windshield.
Why did my back window shatter by itself?
Acura blames the rear defroster grid on 2019 and 2020 RDX models, and GM found an overheating defroster circuit on 2014 to 2019 Silverado and Sierra power sliding windows. Ask the dealer about your model.
How long does it take to replace a back window?
Acura pays its dealers 1.5 hours for the RDX, and Ram 2.4 hours for the sliding back glass of the Ram 1500.
Can a back window be repaired instead of replaced?
Rear glass is tempered, which breaks into small rounded pieces, so once it breaks the whole window is replaced. A leak at a truck’s sliding window can be sealed instead, as Ram now does.
