Short answer

Windshield chip repair costs about $45 to $150 for the first chip at four glass shops with published prices, and $10 to $30 for each extra chip in the same visit. With comprehensive coverage, Progressive, GEICO and Travelers charge no deductible for a chip that can be repaired.

A truck kicked up a stone on the highway, you heard a sharp crack, and now there is a small bullseye or star in your windshield. It is about the size of a dime, and you are wondering if it can wait.

So how much does windshield chip repair cost? About $45 to $150 for the first chip at glass shops that put their prices online, and $10 to $30 for each extra chip fixed in the same visit.

If you have comprehensive coverage, the repair is often free. Progressive, GEICO and Travelers do not charge a deductible for a chip that can be repaired.

In this guide I will show you what four shops charge, when a chip can still be repaired, when insurance pays, what owners paid, what a kit costs, and the price if it turns into a crack.

What Glass Shops Charge for a Chip

Here are four shops in Utah, Colorado and Texas that publish their chip repair prices, checked October 9, 2026:

Cracks N Chips, Salt Lake City, Utahfirst chip; $30 for each extra chip$45 – $50
Bob’s Windshield Repair, Colorado Springsfirst chip; $10 for each extra chip on the same car$65
Patsco, San Antonio, Texasa simple chip, out of pocket; $25 for each extra chipunder $85
Luxury Auto Works, Austin, Texasone chip, with small add-ons for more spots$90 – $150

The Austin shop prices a chip by its size, how easy it is to reach, the type of glass, and whether the technician comes to you.

The repair is quick. Bob’s finishes most chips within 30 minutes, and the Austin shop in 30 to 45 minutes.

A short crack costs a little more. Cracks N Chips charges $85 for a crack up to 5 inches, plus $8.50 for each inch over that, so a 10 inch crack is $85 + (5 × $8.50) = $127.50. Patsco’s cash price for a crack repair is $85.

Can Your Chip Still Be Repaired?

Size and place decide it. GEICO repairs chips smaller than a quarter and cracks shorter than a dollar bill, and Progressive gives about 6 inches as the usual limit for a crack.

Four rows: a chip smaller than a quarter, repair (GEICO's limit); a crack shorter than 6 inches, repair (Progressive's usual limit); damage in the driver's direct view, replace; a break through the inner glass, replace (the Austin shop)
When a chip or crack can still be repaired, by the limits GEICO, Progressive and a glass shop in Austin give.

The Austin shop adds two more limits. Damage that blocks the driver’s direct line of sight, and damage that has gone through to the inner layer of the glass, call for a new windshield.

Do not wait long. Heat, cold and the next bump can turn a chip into a crack, and then a repair is off the table.

On Tesla Motors Club, a Model S owner watched a small chip grow into a crack down the whole driver’s side in 3 days, in February 2023. The new windshield was quoted at $1,400 to $1,700.

Will Your Insurance Pay for It?

Often, yes, if your policy has comprehensive coverage. Progressive does not charge a deductible for a windshield that can be repaired, in all 50 states, when the policy’s conditions are met.

GEICO waives the deductible for damage that can be repaired, and Travelers writes that in general you will not pay your deductible for the repair of a chip or crack.

There is a catch. If the repair fails and the glass has to be replaced, Travelers expects the deductible to apply to the new windshield.

Three states go further. In Florida, Kentucky and South Carolina, the law takes the deductible away on covered glass damage, so with comprehensive coverage even a new windshield has no deductible.

Should you claim a chip at all? On Tacoma World in June 2021, an insurance broker in Texas wrote that an $85 rock chip claim added $303 a year to a customer’s quote, for 39 months.

Other owners see no change. One Toyota owner’s insurer does not count glass damage among the things that raise the rate. So ask your insurer how it treats a glass claim before you file one.

What Owners Paid

So Safelite’s cash price was about $175 in both cases, for a chip and a crack or for two chips. Two chips cost $75 at Bob’s ($65 + $10) and $75 to $80 at Cracks N Chips ($45 to $50 + $30).

Can You Fix a Chip Yourself?

A home kit with resin and a small syringe costs far less. A Tacoma World member paid $13 for a Permatex kit in June 2026, and can hardly see where the dime size chip was.

A Toyota owner pays about $10 for the same kind of kit, and a Tesla owner used $25 kits from an auto parts store with some success.

Kits have limits, though. They lack the strong vacuum and the shop resins, the Austin shop explains, and that Toyota owner found they only handle smaller damage than a shop can.

I advise a kit only for a small, fresh chip outside your line of sight. A crack, or a chip in front of the driver, is a job for a shop.

What You Pay If the Chip Turns Into a Crack

Then you are buying a new windshield, and the cameras behind it may need to be set up again. Here is what owners were charged:

So a $45 to $150 repair this week can save you $850 to $1,700 later. That is the whole case for fixing a chip early.

Price bars: home repair kit, owners paid, $10 to $25; first chip at four glass shops $45 to $150; Safelite cash price, two owners, $174 to $175; new windshield, Safelite and Tesla, $850 to $1,700; Model 3 windshield at Tesla in 2026, $1,496
