Short answer

A new windshield cost owners $348.03 to about $2,500, the most on newer SUVs with cameras behind the glass. With Ram's own glass and Chrysler's job time, a 2014 to 2020 Ram 1500 windshield comes to $469.51 to $613.62.

A crack is spreading across your windshield, or a rock left a break too big to fill. Here is what a new windshield costs, why cars with a camera behind the glass cost more, and how insurance changes your bill.

So how much does it cost to replace a windshield? Owners told NHTSA, the US road safety agency, they paid or were quoted $348.03 to about $2,500, depending mostly on the car and the cameras behind its glass.

With Ram’s own glass and Chrysler’s job time, a new windshield for a 2014 to 2020 Ram 1500 comes to $469.51 to $613.62. A Jeep Compass comes to $811.98, or $904.38 when its camera must be aligned.

In this guide I will show you what owners paid, what Chrysler’s own glass and job times come to, and why a camera adds to the bill. I will also show you how insurance and the carmaker can cut what you pay.

What Owners Paid

Here is what owners told NHTSA they paid or were quoted for a new front windshield, with a link to each complaint:

  • Safelite replaced the windshield of a 2023 Dodge Challenger for $348.03, filed in October 2024.
  • A new windshield on a 2020 Ford Explorer came to $886.85, filed in May 2025.
  • A Tesla service center replaced a 2018 Model 3 windshield for $1,023.26 after it refused warranty, filed in January 2021.
  • Safelite put a 2020 Subaru Legacy windshield at $1,035 without insurance, filed in March 2023.
  • A VW dealer wanted $789.89 for the glass and $250 to install it on a 2022 Atlas, and covered the camera calibration, filed in August 2023.
  • A Subaru dealer replaced a 2018 Forester windshield, with the EyeSight cameras, for $1,674, filed in April 2023.
  • A 2022 Ford Bronco Sport owner was looking at $1,900 to $2,100 out of pocket, filed in March 2023.
  • Each new windshield on a 2023 Kia Telluride was around $2,500, filed in June 2023.

So owners paid or were quoted $348.03 to about $2,500, and the newer SUVs with safety cameras behind the glass are at the top.

What Chrysler’s Own Glass and Times Come To

Chrysler found cracks at the lower edge of the windshield on some 2021 to 2023 Ram ProMaster vans, and pays its dealers 1.6 hours to replace one while the van is still under its basic warranty.

On some 2023 Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models the glass could delaminate, and Chrysler pays 2.3 hours, a time that includes aligning the forward facing camera.

With Chrysler’s Wagoneer parts list from a dealer parts website, checked October 13, 2026, and $132 an hour, Tekmetric’s US average from June 2026:

Windshield68624867AB, replaces 68441925AD$1,018.13
Urethane glass kits, 22 x $74.34$148.68
Labor, 2.3 hourswith the camera alignment$303.60

So the Wagoneer’s windshield comes to $1,470.41. On the ProMaster van, one of its listed windshields is $698.34, so with 1.6 hours it comes to $909.54.

Ram’s windshields for the 2014 to 2020 Ram 1500 are $258.31 and $402.42, depending on the truck’s options. With Chrysler’s 1.6 hours, a new one comes to $469.51 to $613.62, plus the urethane kit at $74.34.

Jeep’s windshield for the 2018 to 2021 Compass is $600.78. With 1.6 hours it comes to $811.98, or $904.38 with 2.3 hours when the forward facing camera must be aligned.

Why a Camera Behind the Glass Costs More

Many newer cars read the road through a camera behind the windshield for lane keeping and automatic braking.

After a new windshield, that camera may need calibrating so those systems work correctly, Luxury Auto Works, a repair shop in Austin, explains.

That is why a 2019 Subaru Outback owner paid almost $1,200 for a windshield including the EyeSight recalibration, filed in July 2023. Ask for the calibration price in your quote.

How Insurance and the Carmaker Can Cut Your Bill

Glass coverage matters. A 2021 Honda CR-V owner’s insurance paid for a new windshield and the camera reprogramming with a $0 glass deductible, filed in March 2022, while a 2015 Explorer owner paid a $500 deductible.

Carmakers sometimes help too. Subaru of America offered a $1,000 gift toward a new windshield on a 2022 Outback if a Subaru dealer did the job, though that dealer quoted $2,067.61, filed in September 2025.

A chip is far cheaper to fix while it is small: the Austin shop typically charges $90 to $150 for a single chip, and many insurers cover chip repair and may waive the deductible.

When You Need a New Windshield

Chips smaller than a quarter and short cracks can often be filled, the Austin shop says.

Replace the glass when the damage sits in the driver’s direct line of sight, when cracks are long or run to the edge, or when several chips are clustered together.

In Texas a safety inspection needs a clear view for the driver, so damage there can fail the inspection.
