Short answer

When every tap runs dry, it is easy to agree to the first repair that promises your water back. But a well pump quote needs more detail than the horsepower of the new motor.

So what does well pump replacement cost? Bracker Pump & Well Service in Wisconsin publishes pump replacement offers from $1,450 to $2,250, before its $285 water-sample charge and any extra work.

For a larger package, Perry Pump Repair Service in Florida starts at $5,000 for a submersible system with new drop pipe. Those are different jobs, and I will show you what separates them.

Published Well Contractor Prices

Bracker’s prices cover removing and replacing a four-inch submersible pump. Its page separates composite and stainless models, checked October 17, 2026:

1/2 HP composite pump replacementBracker, southeastern Wisconsinfrom $1,450
3/4 HP composite pump replacementBrackerfrom $1,500
1/2 HP stainless pump replacementBracker web special$1,650
3/4 HP stainless pump replacementBracker web special$1,850
1 HP stainless pump replacement, 10 GPMBracker special$2,250

The offers include ordinary installation items, chlorination and the pump’s check valve. Wiring, code work and additional pumping or cleaning can add to the bill. Bracker asks customers to call for current prices.

With Bracker’s separate $285 sample charge, the starting composite half-horsepower job is $1,450 + $285 = $1,735 before other extras. The stainless one-horsepower special is $2,250 + $285 = $2,535 on the same basis.

Perry Pump Repair Service, serving Gainesville and Lake Butler, Florida, publishes a different set of packages:

Submersible systemPerry: pump, new drop pipe, installation and pressure resetfrom $5,000
Jet pump systemPerry published starting pricefrom $4,000
Shallow-well jet pumpPerry published price$3,200

The Florida package includes new drop pipe, while the Wisconsin offers describe replacing the pump. New pipe and other included work can matter as much as the pump brand.

Submersible or Jet Pump: What Are You Replacing?

A submersible pump hangs down inside the well and pushes water up the pipe. Pulling it brings a long length of pipe and cable out with it, which is why depth and access affect the job.

A jet pump sits above ground. The shallow-well version has a limited suction lift; Runnings’ Red Lion RJS-50 listing specifies up to 25 feet. That is a water-lifting limit, not a promise for every well drilled 25 feet deep.

Perry also services deep-well jet pumps, which have an ejector down in the well. Give the contractor the existing pump model, well records and any known pump setting depth, instead of choosing by the word “well pump” alone.

The Pump Itself Costs Less Than the Whole Job

Runnings sells these Red Lion pumps at the following US retail prices, checked October 17, 2026. Neither includes a contractor pulling and reinstalling your pump:

RJS-50 / 602006 shallow-well jet pumpRunnings, 1/2 HP, 115/230 V, pressure switch included$259.99
RL12G05-2W2V / 14942402 submersibleRunnings, 1/2 HP, four-inch, two-wire, 230 V$449.99

These prices are useful for understanding the equipment share of a bill. The jet pump includes a pressure switch. Neither price covers a contractor pulling the old pump and installing the new one.

I would let the well contractor match the pump to your water level, required flow and household pressure. Buying a bigger motor without checking those needs can leave you paying for the wrong equipment.

Keep the Pressure Tank on Its Own Line

The pressure tank stores water under pressure so the pump does not start for every small draw. Replacing the down-well pump does not automatically mean the tank has failed too.

On its separate tank page, Bracker starts a like-for-like Well-X-Trol or Goulds tank change at $1,050 for the 20-gallon size and larger. Changing to an unlike captive-air tank starts at $1,200.

Bracker also shows $1,600 for a Goulds V100 replacing the comparable WX-203 size. These are installed tank offers, not prices for a bare tank from a store.

If your pump starts and stops rapidly, have the tank and controls checked before agreeing to pull the pump. Perry’s service page describes diagnosing the system and quoting a switch repair when that is the fault.

Owner Bills and Repair Costs

Owners on the Colorado-based Rising Sun 4WD Club forum shared bills with details that price averages leave out:

The New York invoice replaced long runs of pipe and wire. The Pine owner did some electrical work separately. Those details help you compare bills without assuming every dollar bought the same work.

A $5,230 owner invoice includes a 1 HP pump, pressure switch, 400 feet each of pipe, copper wire and rope, plus seasonal water startup.

What to Ask Before the Pump Comes Out

The estimate should also identify pipe and cable being reused or replaced, disinfection and water testing, and any access or after-hours charge. Perry repairs wells but refers new well drilling to a driller.

Well Pump Replacement Questions

Does a well pump price include the pressure tank?

Do not assume so. Bracker publishes tank replacement separately, and the retail pumps above are equipment only. A system quote should identify the tank if one is included.

Why does a deeper pump cost more to replace?

More pipe and cable must be handled to reach it. Replacing those materials adds to the work, and site access can affect the lifting equipment needed.

Can I replace a submersible pump myself?

Pulling a deep pump involves heavy pipe, electrical connections and keeping the well clean. I would use a well contractor for that job, especially when the pump depth or condition of the pipe is unknown.

Does no water mean the pump is dead?

No. A power, control, tank or pipe problem can interrupt the supply.
