The salt tank is full, but the spots on your glasses have returned. Before replacing the whole softener, it helps to know whether the trouble is in the valve, the resin or the settings.
So water softener replacement can start with an installed package of $1,850 to $3,250 at Valley Plumbing in Salt Lake City. That is its standard single-tank salt-based system, including the bypass and drain connection.
I will compare system types, show what installation includes, and look at repairs that could save the existing unit. The US prices here were checked October 18, 2026.
Installed Water Softener Prices
Valley Plumbing publishes these regular prices alongside separate membership rates. The table below uses the regular rates, without a membership or coupon.
Kind Water Co in Des Moines offers another comparison: $1,900 installed for a softener without carbon filtration, or $2,500 with whole-home carbon. Its page includes installation and taxes in those prices.
Keep filtration separate when comparing bids. A carbon filter, iron treatment or drinking-water system can make a package more expensive without making it a larger softener.
Salt-Based Softener or Salt-Free Conditioner?
A salt-based softener removes hardness minerals through ion exchange. The resin needs regeneration, which uses brine and sends wastewater to a drain.
A salt-free conditioner serves a different purpose. SpringWell describes its FutureSoft system as changing how hardness forms scale, while leaving the minerals in the water.
That product needs no salt, drain or electricity, but it will not give the same soft-water feel or stop spotting in the same way. If your goal is removing hardness, do not treat the two technologies as interchangeable.

For a conditioner, have the dealer check your water against the selected model’s limits. A product chosen for treated city water may need extra preparation on a private well.
How Much Grain Capacity Do You Need?
Start with a hardness test and actual household water use. Valley sizes its systems from the tested hardness and household water use.
Dierolf also checks iron in well water because it can clog resin and damage control valves. Its team can assess whether a filter before the softener would help.
Kind Water Co explains why the settings matter: a hardness setting above your tap reading uses extra salt, while a setting below it lets hardness through. Have the installer use your water-test result.
Installation, Bypass and Old-Unit Removal
A replacement can reuse a suitable existing installation, but the pipe connections, drain route and available space still need checking against the new unit.
Dierolf Plumbing and Water Treatment in southeastern Pennsylvania publishes $300 to $600 for installation labor. Treat that as a separate labor comparison, not an extra to add to an already-installed package.
Valley’s new installations include a bypass. Its separate retrofit price is $285 to $485. The bypass lets water continue to the house while the softener is isolated for service.
Valley’s drain-connection range is $150 to $385, usually included in the installation quote. Confirm whether the existing discharge point can be reused and who corrects an unsuitable connection.
- Ask what power connection the new model needs. Valley includes power wiring in its installation process.
- Keep access for salt loading and future valve service, not just enough floor space to squeeze in the tanks.
- Ask whether the price includes disconnecting and carrying away the old tanks.
Can a Valve or Resin Repair Save It?
Kind Water Co charges $199 to diagnose an unknown problem, or $99 for a known-issue visit plus the part. An empty salt supply or a salt bridge deserves attention before you approve new equipment.

A resin change, a whole resin tank and a replacement control head are different purchases. Have the repair description name what is being kept, what is being replaced and the warranty on that work.
I would compare the repair with a like-for-like new unit if several parts are worn. A small valve repair on a sound tank is a different decision from rebuilding an old system with leaking connections.
Homeowner Estimates From Houzz
On March 3, 2007, an Orange County, California, condo owner posted three estimates for two occupants. These are historical comparisons, not today’s price list, and the packages were different.
- Culligan estimated $2,195 for a softener with mixed-in carbon and a separate brine tank. The owner did not give a model number.
- Kinetico estimated $4,495 before conditional discounts for a twin-tank system with a separate dechlorinator and brine tank.
- Rayne estimated $2,275 for an RXD1500 package with mixed-in carbon and a brine tank. None of the three estimates included reverse osmosis.
A different owner, on April 27, 2012, reported a resin quote above $300 plus a $150 service call. They had already paid $150 for diagnosis and were disputing warranty coverage.
Questions About Replacing a Softener
How Does the Installer Check the New System?
Valley runs the first regeneration cycle and tests hardness at a kitchen tap to check that the system is working.
