Your automatic transmission shifts hard, slips between gears, will not go into reverse, or the dash tells you to service the transmission and the car crawls along with reduced power.
The shop scans it, finds a code like P0747, and says the valve body has to be replaced. That is the block of passages and solenoids that tells the transmission when to shift.
So how much does a transmission valve body replacement cost? With the carmakers’ own parts and job times at $132 an hour, it comes to $851.39 to $1,369.90 on the cars I worked out below.
Repair shops in Simi Valley, California and Austin, Texas charge $900 to $2,500. Owners told NHTSA, the US road safety agency, that they paid or were quoted $903 to $3,600, mostly at dealers.
In this guide I will show you what each valve body comes to, what owners paid, the special coverages that pay for it, and how to tell a valve body job from a whole new transmission.
What the Carmakers’ Own Parts and Times Come To
These are valve body jobs the carmakers put a job time on in their bulletins, at $132 an hour, Tekmetric’s US average from June 2026. The valve bodies are the carmakers’ own, priced on their parts websites on October 16, 2026:
GM pays 2.6 hours to fit a new valve body in the 10-speed of its V8 pickups and big SUVs. It allows another half hour to test the transmission and half an hour to reprogram its computer when certain codes are set.
There is a catch with that GM part. It carries a $1,000 core charge, a deposit you get back when the old valve body goes back. The Mopar valve body for the 2013 Charger and 300 carries a $200 one.
Subaru pays 1.3 hours to replace the CVT valve body on 2013 to 2019 Outback and Legacy 2.5 models and on many Impreza, Crosstrek and Forester models, plus half an hour to diagnose it.
Mazda pays 2.4 hours on the 2012 and 2013 Mazda3 with the 2.0 engine and automatic. Jeep pays 2.0 hours on 2024 and 2025 Wagoneer models built up to August 22, 2024.
Chrysler pays 1.7 hours on the 2013 Charger and 300 with the 3.6 engine, plus 0.2 hour with all-wheel drive.
What Repair Shops Charge
Perry’s Quality Auto in Simi Valley, California charges $950 to $1,650 for valve body service or replacement. It also charges $129 to diagnose a transmission and puts that toward the repair.
Luxury Auto Works, a repair shop in Austin, Texas, charges $900 to $2,500 for valve body or mechatronic repair. A mechatronic unit is a valve body with the transmission computer built in, as on many Volkswagen and Audi models.
Both shops price a whole transmission far higher. Perry’s charges $2,800 to $4,800 for a rebuild and $3,400 to $6,200 for a remanufactured transmission fitted, and the Austin shop $2,800 to $6,500 or more for a rebuild.

What Owners Paid
Here is what owners told NHTSA they paid or were quoted for a valve body, with a link to each complaint:
- A GMC dealer quoted $2,665.85 plus tax to replace the valve body of a 2023 Sierra 1500 with the 6.2 engine and code P0747, filed in August 2026.
- The owner of a 2022 GMC Yukon paid $2,800 for a new valve body after GMC said its special coverage was not assigned to that VIN, filed in August 2026.
- A Ford dealer offered a new valve body for a 2020 Edge for $2,000, not guaranteed to fix it. A second shop found internal damage and quoted $8,198 for a new transmission, filed in August 2026.
- A Ford dealer charged $2,988.11 for a valve body repair on a 2019 Escape in June 2026, and the owner was then told it needed an $8,500 transmission, filed in July 2026.
- A Chevrolet dealer gave the owner of a 2022 Silverado 1500 two estimates: a valve body for $3,100 or a whole transmission for $8,000, filed in March 2025.
- A mechanic replaced the valve body of a 2017 Nissan Rogue for $1,871.68, filed in January 2025.
- The owner of a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 with the 10-speed expected to pay $3,600 for a new valve body, filed in November 2024.
- A Subaru dealer recommended a new CVT valve body for a 2014 Forester with 150,000 miles for $2,200, filed in February 2023.
- A Ford dealer agreed to fix the valve body of a 2016 Explorer for $903, filed in April 2022.
- The owner of a 2014 Jeep Cherokee paid a dealer $1,169 for a new valve body, and it now shifts more smoothly than it ever had, filed in February 2020.
- A Subaru dealer quoted $2,345 plus tax for a valve body on a 2011 Outback, and $3,500 plus tax more for a torque converter if that did not fix it, filed in December 2019.
- A Volkswagen dealer quoted $2,360 for a failed mechatronic unit on a 2010 Jetta, filed in July 2019.
So owners paid or were quoted $903 to $3,600 for a valve body, and $8,000 to $8,500 when the whole transmission had to go.

Special Coverages and Warranties That Pay for It
GM covers a worn transmission control valve for 15 years or 150,000 miles on many trucks and SUVs with its 10-speed. The signs it names are harsh shifting, a service engine soon message, reduced engine power and code P0747.
Under special coverage N242454441 that means certain 2020 to 2022 Silverado and Sierra pickups, light and heavy duty, and 2021 and 2022 Tahoe, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade models. N252536751 adds more 2022 SUVs.
GM repays owners who already paid for this repair. The coverage goes by VIN, and the 2022 Yukon owner above was told it was not assigned to that truck, so ask a GM dealer to check your VIN before you pay.
Subaru extended its CVT warranty to 10 years or 100,000 miles on many 2010 to 2015, 2018, 2019 and 2020 models, and a valve body is one of the repairs it covers. The newer cars can still be inside it, so check with a Subaru dealer first.
Valve Body or a Whole Transmission?
Carmakers tell their own technicians to try the valve body first in some cases.
Nissan’s bulletin for the 2013 to 2016 Altima with the four cylinder, the 2014 to 2016 Rogue and the 2015 and 2016 Juke says to replace the CVT valve body, and not the CVT, when certain codes are stored.
GM’s 2024 bulletin for the Malibu, Trailblazer and Encore GX with its VT40 CVT also says to replace the valve body first, and only then look inside the transmission for worn parts.
That matters for your wallet. The 2022 Silverado owner above was offered a valve body for $3,100 or a new transmission for $8,000.
But a valve body cannot fix worn clutches or a failed torque converter. The 2019 Escape above broke down again eight miles after its valve body repair.
So I advise you to ask the shop what the codes and the fluid show before you pay for either one.
Answers to the Questions That Are Asked a Lot
How much does it cost to replace a transmission valve body?
With the carmakers’ own parts and job times at $132 an hour, $851.39 to $1,369.90 on the cars above. Shops in Simi Valley and Austin charge $900 to $2,500, and owners paid or were quoted $903 to $3,600.
How long does a valve body replacement take?
The carmakers pay 1.3 to 2.6 hours for the cars above, from Subaru’s CVT to GM’s 10-speed trucks, plus some time to test the transmission and program it.
Is a valve body cheaper than a new transmission?
Usually by thousands. Perry’s in Simi Valley charges $950 to $1,650 for valve body work and $3,400 to $6,200 for a remanufactured transmission fitted.
Can I drive with a bad valve body?
It is not a good idea. GM links a worn valve in its 10-speed to harsh shifts and reduced engine power, and its special coverage is titled momentary rear wheel lock-up.
Is the valve body covered by warranty?
It is part of the powertrain warranty, and some carmakers extend it: GM for 15 years or 150,000 miles on many 2020 to 2022 trucks and SUVs, and Subaru for 10 years or 100,000 miles on many CVTs.
