Short answer

A Tesla battery replacement costs about $5,000 to $21,000. Used or rebuilt Model 3 and Model Y packs cost $5,000 to $7,500 at independent shops, rebuilt Model S packs from Tesla came to about $11,500 to $16,000, and a new one to about $21,000.

Your Tesla shows “Maximum battery charge level reduced”, or a BMS_u029 alert, and the service center tells you the big battery has to go. Or you are looking at a cheap used Model S and you wonder what that battery would cost you one day.

So how much does a Tesla battery replacement cost? About $5,000 for a used Model 3 pack from an independent shop, and up to about $21,000 for a new Model S pack from Tesla with labor and tax.

In this guide I will show you what the warranty covers, what Tesla quoted real owners, what independent shops charge, and what the small 12-volt battery costs, because many people searching mean that one.

Check the Battery Warranty First

Tesla covers the main battery for 8 years on the cars it sells today. The miles depend on the model, and the battery has to keep at least 70% of its capacity in that time:

Model S, Model X and Cybertruck8 years or 150,000 miles
Model 3 RWD, Model Y RWD and Model Y AWD8 years or 100,000 miles
Model 3 and Model Y Premium and Performance8 years or 120,000 miles

That is from Tesla’s warranty page, which I checked on October 5, 2026. If your car is older, the warranty that came with it is the one that counts, so look at your papers or the Tesla app.

What Tesla Charges for a Main Battery

Tesla does not publish its battery prices. Owners do post their quotes and bills on Tesla Motors Club, an owners’ forum, and this is what Tesla quoted them:

2013 Model S 85, December 2021rebuilt pack $10,500 + 2 hours labor $380 + tax $630$11,510
2013 Model S 85, December 2022rebuilt pack $13,500 + labor $429 + taxabout $15,000
2012 Model S P85, October 2023rebuilt pack $14,600 + taxabout $16,000
Model S 85 or 90, May 2024, rebuilt or newbase $14,500 rebuilt or $18,000 new, + labor, parts and taxabout $16,000 – $21,000
Model 3 Long Range, July 2022the battery part alone, after a deer strike$13,500

So a Model S battery from Tesla has come to about $11,500 to $16,000 rebuilt, and about $21,000 new. The rebuilt Model S packs came with a warranty of 4 years or 50,000 miles, as the owners wrote.

For the Model 3 and Model Y there are fewer quotes. In July 2022, two service advisors told one owner $7,000 plus labor for a Model 3 battery and at most $13,000 for a Model Y Performance battery.

That owner worked it out at about $10,000 and $15,000 all in. Prices move, so get your own quote in the Tesla app before you decide anything.

A Used or Rebuilt Pack From an Independent Shop

Tesla is not the only place to go. Independent EV shops fit used packs from wrecked cars or rebuilt packs, and some repair the pack you already have. They cost much less, but the warranty is shorter:

Calimotive, Sacramento CA, Model 3used or rebuilt pack, 2 years or 24,000 miles of warranty$5,000 – $6,000
Calimotive, Sacramento CA, Model Y Long Rangeused or rebuilt pack, same warranty$6,000
Electrics Auto, South Carolina, Model 3 or Yfitted, 30 days of warranty$6,500 – $7,500
Electrics Auto, South Carolina, Model S or X 100 kWhfitted, 30 days of warranty$11,500
EVs Republic, Model S 85rebuilt pack, 2 years or 20,000 miles of warranty$10,500 + labor and tax

Calimotive’s prices are on its shop pages, which I checked on October 5, 2026. It asks for your old battery back as a core, and tax is extra. Ask whether fitting is included, because its page lists installation at its Sacramento shop.

Electrics Auto posted its prices on Tesla Motors Club in May 2024. Its packs come from wrecked cars, each one tested, and the old battery stays with the shop as a core.

EVs Republic gave the $10,500 quote to a P85 owner in October 2023. A year later, another owner wrote that EVs Republic repaired a P85 pack for $6,500 and the car was still going strong.

If you want to keep the car for many years, I would lean to the 4-year cover on a Tesla pack. If you only need it to run for a year or two, a used pack is the cheaper way.

Price bars: used or rebuilt Model 3 pack at Calimotive $5,000 to $6,000, Model 3 or Y pack fitted at Electrics Auto $6,500 to $7,500, rebuilt Model S pack from Tesla all in $11,510 to $16,000, new Model S pack from Tesla about $21,000

What Owners Paid, With Their Own Words

Here are the posts behind those numbers, so you can read each owner’s story yourself:

The deer story shows a battery can need replacing long before it wears out. If it happens to you, ask your insurer before you pay for it yourself.

If It Is Only the 12-Volt Battery

Some Tesla alerts are about the small 12-volt battery, not the main one. That battery is cheap to replace, and here is what owners paid Tesla for it:

Mobile service, Model X, December 2024$165 battery + $75 labor$240
Mobile service, California, December 2024$165 battery + $100 labor + tax and feesabout $280
Tesla estimate, June 2026the battery alone was $150 on Tesla’s parts site$192
Over the counter, 2016 Model X, February 2026battery only$195

One owner of a 2020 Model X was quoted $499 by a service center in December 2024, and another owner replied that it seemed unusually high. So if your quote is far above $300, ask again or book mobile service.
